    Hey Hollis and Miss Nancy!! I talked to you guys earlier in the year and have been so busy with the garden this year I hadn’t thought about it, but as a first year gardener, I had an amazing year. You wouldn’t believe it, I had tomatoes that got upwards of 17ft tall! Amazing peas, peppers and kale. I wanted to thank you guys for the good advice and lessons. Nothing like seeing family smile after eating fresh veggies.
    For only getting a maximum sun exposure of 6 hours, we did real well. Thanks guys!

    Can I make a suggestion that would help me? I find it helpful to know what time of the year that you are planting. I know that it is different for specific parts of the country but it would still help me to know what time of the year it is in the video. You could just tell us in the video that this is the "1st day of April" for example. This is the part that confuses me. I am not sure when to start my seeds and when to put them in the ground and when to harvest. I know that there are guides that can tell this info but I learn better by observation rather than reading. For some reason it clicks better and I retain the information when I watch someone planting. Thanks for the consideration. I really love your step by step videos. I have learned so much watching them.

    Thank you! What a gorgeous harvest. We had enjoyed my version of "Irish Sushi" yesterday, which is a generous point cut corned beef brisket, braised for 5 hours until succulent and tender, then two large heads of cored cabbage, goes into the braising liquid and gently steamed for a few moments. I remove those leaves, slice up the brisket and roll them up in the leaves (I usually need to remove the tougher ribs) and drizzle them with melted butter, salt and pepper. We follow a Ketogenic Lifestyle and sir, you had my mouth watering for more as they're already gone!

    Great harvest of cabbage. I have picked a few heads so far this year. One thing I learned is when the cabbage is ready. Enjoy watching your video's, because I have learned a lot. Will be adding to my square foot gardening beds, so that I can expand my crops. Will use your idea for lettuce, very easy to grow and pick from what I see. I guess when you move, you will need to start your earth garden all over again. I know that, that will be a lot of work to get started again. Hope your move goes easy, I know when we moved, it was a pain going through 34 years of retain stuff. Keep up the good work, your video's are great.

      Thanks for watching. Yes getting the earth garden up and running in Florida will be a lot of work. Sandy soil needs lots of composting. I plan to take my time and do it right. Planning to really expand the container garden operation. Also adding several animal pens. We will do update videos along the way👍

    Great Video!
    I live in Northern CA - SF Bay Area. About 2-3 months ago I planted some Napa Cabbage. I planted them in two areas; one in a flower bed in my front yard and the rest ( 5 plants) in my backyard. The one in the front yard is maturing nicely and is looking very full. I think It will produce soon. The ones in the backyard are still looking puny! Maybe I need to water them more which I 'm already starting to do - 2-3 times a week. I'm beginning to think the soil needs to be roto tilled because maybe the roots aren't going deep enough? And also the soil isn't staying as moist as it should. I'd appreciate your input when you have a chance! Thanks!!

      @Norbert Demanu, Hi- I'm a 4th gen San Franciscan and in now I am just a few minutes away in San Bruno but I learned here on this block anyway the good growing is all front of the house because it's facing South -East. A shame because the back yards are big but Thankfully so are the front. If they are working in the front, stick to it. This spring I will put it all in containers in front and get some chickens for the back! Good luck and Good Bless

      LOL!! I was born and raised in Jacksonville so I fully understand the challenges of the sandy soil. Only reason we are moving to Florida is to be neat kids and Grandkids otherwise we would have selected somewhere with better soil. I will have to condition the garden the first full year to grow vegetables. While I am getting the soil ready, I will be working on building and setting up all the animal pens. Going to be a busy first two years. We plan to do update videos of setting up the homestead👍

    Hi i noticed u have the cabbage in containers do u add fish in it for fertilizer ? Thankyou i love your videos btw! ☺️

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  Год назад +1

      No ma’am. No fish in containers. The soil in containers does not have enough bacteria to breakdown the fish fast enough resulting in maggots

  • @garyschmelzer
    @garyschmelzer 6 лет назад

    Hollis, I have been told that cabbage can't be grown here in zone 9. I live in Flagler county which is considered North Florida. Are you going to grow cabbage in the fall if so what is the name of the cabbage you will choose. Thanks buddy

    Is the spacing on center? Because if not then you could half it

    • @partyof9418
      @partyof9418 2 года назад +2

      Like if the package says 18 it doesn’t mean 18 inches between EACH plant it means 9
      For example if a package says 12 inches, take a ruler, place the seed on the six inch line, you can plant a seed six inches left and six inches right for a total of twelve, ive done this with lots of crops and not only reduced empty space but also less weeding because of less empty space.
      I do the square foot method in an in ground garden bed, not sure about row gardens

    I'm going to have to try some Napa cabbage. How do you store any excess cabbage or do you really eat that much before it goes bad?

      Nancy makes Kimchi with it that lasts for several months. She makes one for me that is not too spicy and one for her that is very spicy. I like the Napa Cabbage Kimchi the best. She has a video up on how to make it Thanks for watching, have a blessed weekend😍😍🐶

      Hollis & Nancy's Homestead may have to try that. I'm not much of kraut person if it's anything like that. Though I know fresh Sauer kraut is very healthy. 😊

      Nancys kraut is not sour. Hers is actually a little on the sweet side.

      We eat and share them as we harvest them. We don't try to store them. They will last a few weeks in the refrigerator 😍😍🐶

    do i have to grow it in small contaners first? can I just plant the seeds directly in my main garden?

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  4 года назад +1

      I recommend starting from seed in seed starter trays then transplant seedlings to earth bed when they are 4-6” with 2-3 true leaves

    Hollis how do you control weeds in your earth garden?

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  7 лет назад +1

      +Vera Braswell
      I hand pull weeds on the row and use a cultivator between the rows. I do this often as needed. Here is a link showing how I use the cultivator:
