I'm in tears....humanity loves to move forward so fast....we must have missed so many other stories....WTF. Hawaiians are the Kings of the Pacific.....not a single child born today will ever know of the adventures that humans are capable of....AI crap n phones....blah blah blah....garbage. I wish I could have what they did in the days gone...these are amazing young men....now as a man in today's society I'm just a Puppet.
Rest in peace you amazing warriors of the oceans!

What a compelling story! It amazes me how the US could use native Hawaiian students, and mostly non white students to go into a dangerous situation, and on top of that, give them the bare minimum to survive on. You would think the US would come get these kids, but they just left these kids to fend for themselves. I feel for them to have to lose friends and see some of them killed! The USA basically employed high schoolers, and young adults to do a mission they should have had adults to do. It feels like they used these kids as human shields. And it hurts to know this as a person of native Hawaiian ancestry. It was a mission that had so many odds stacked against it, but these boys made it work and they were resilient! They were more men, and had more balls than any of those military guys who recruited them and abandoned them on those islands! They have my utmost respect and honor!

Never knew! Thank you so much for making this documentary. The outrageous irony of the colonial steal of our islands … who then named these young innocent Hawaiian men “colonialist” brings a blend of anger upon so much grief. What a huge dirty secret. However, these young Hawaiian men will forever make Hawai’i deeply proud. Many Blessings to each and all, as well as their families.

The US government has a long history of exploitation of native peoples and wrapping it with a blanket of secrecy then never acknowledging the contribution of the participants’. I am deeply moved by their story and Creator seems to always have a plan to reveal what is hidden and bring it to the light. Many blessings on their families their communities and all the Hawaiian people.

Awesome events. This is the first time I've heard this story. This is what being a real man is about. I wonder if any of today's young men would be able to do the same. I wonder if I could.

Yes! The water men of today, the surfers and fishermen are still doing those things. Two white Americans on Maui, and an Australian took a 99 year lease on Namotu in Fiji. It is probably a five acre island. It is surrounded by great surf breaks. I spent a month there. Best time of my life. They planted trees and plants, they built huts, they bring over water and food, they fish most days, and surf. Another water man from Maui and California established a self sufficient surf camp in Java. It is a long tradition of traveling the planet to find perfect waves with no one else on them.

Wow! Came across this by accident at 2am here in California. Couldn't stop watching it. Young Hawaiian watermen who served their country so selflessly. Thank you for your service to our country at such a critical time in history. Hope the recognition of their service continues to grow. Such a remarkable historic story that needs to be shared. Thanks so much for posting. 🤙🤙🌊😎

What a great story, almost lost in the mists of time. The families of these men can be so proud of what they accomplished. A unique and amazing experience. They were chosen for their uniquely qualified skills in Island survival, and they performed so well. Just like the WWII 442nd Infantry regiment, the most decorated in U.S. military history, composed of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry, they deserve to be honored and remembered.

I never knew about this and I'm sure many others in Hawaii didn't either. Very emotional story, pride, sadness, and frustration that it took so long for these young men to be recognized for what they did and went through. So many hidden stories of U.S. history that are coming to light now makes me wonder why they have been kept secret for so long.

    I am moved beyond words.
Ignoring the politics and imperialism background behind the story is difficult
but I mohave lots of respect for the boys on the Island.
All the boys should have had homes and property given to them by the government for having started the colony.

It's very weird I'm having a technical issue with your video. The screen is black as the video please but if I move the Little Red Dot to advance the film at the bottom in the little mini window I can see the pictures of your video. Unfortunately as I'm playing it the little PBS logo shows up in the bottom-right corner but the screen is completely black. It only happened with this video I've never had this happen before and I went to play other videos and it's not happening to them today. I'm not sure why the film when I stand early Play the movie is solidly black and if I touch the Red Dot to advance the timeline I can see the pictures I'm supposed to be watching. Very strange
