    I think this is an important issue. Many vocal coaches who haven't trained a lot of basses fail to recognize the distinction between a LOW voice and a DEEP voice. When they hear a singer like this, whose speaking voice is deep and lies near the bottom of his range, they immediately think BASSO PROFONDO. If, in addition, the singer hasn't learned to access head voice -- which can be especially trying for basses and baritones with deeper, darker voices -- then they may develop a self-concept of "low bass" based solely on the limitations of upper range. Pinning down the exact sub-type of bass voice isn't always easy, and a misdiagnosis can send one down the wrong path of training and frustrate the accumulation an appropriate repertoire.

      @@shantanu.t Bass Baritone is what most singers are in quartet music. I don't have the full low richness of a Basso but as a Bass Baritone I'm closer to it than the whole Baritone range.

      @@christianhenry4173 So, how do you define the BB via range and tessitura?

    • @INXS-
      @INXS- 2 месяца назад

      1:34 This is true; however, it also doesn't help that there are so many subcategories for Bass and Bartione when it all used to be called Bass and now Bass 1, Bass 2, and then 6-7 subcategories (etc) in both. And then we add lyric and dramatic on all of that, and it's very hard. I'm new to the fach system and have tried all the apps and have concluded that I'm a Dramatic Bass-Baritone. My Chest range is C2 to A4 ( Strong D2-G#4) headvoice is B4-F5. My breaks are at A3 and second is at E4. My tessitura is from D2- C4. When I record with the guys, I'm the only one that doesn't need a mic (Dramatic). Still learing and may learn that I'm a Bass 2, but since my high notes ring, definitely bartione land. Who knows -lol

      @@INXS- bass baritone is still bass. It's just that the richness for lower notes like a profundo isn't as resonate. So a bass baritone is more bass than baritone. The cool thing is that they can duel in between both ranges if needed

    I completely agree with Steve on this one. I would like to add that most vocal coaches that I have met tend to focus on and over work the top of a person's range, sometimes causing major strain and destroying the lower end of a singer's range. That is probably just my bad luck. Admittedly, it is probably one of the most difficult things to do ("pinning down"/determining the correct sub-type of bass voice), which is why we have so many basses nowadays that sound like the "Jake Brake" on a semi in their lower range and choked on the upper end. I can't remember the exact key that a voice teacher had me singing an old Caccini piece, but I had to drop it down to the b-flat to sing without straining my voice. That didn't happen until I had burned a LOT of bridges, pissed some people off, and ruined (at least for now) my chances at an education and career in music. She IS the professional and I the student, so it could have just been my own failings in doing so. Hopefully we can have more coaches that can bring more voices like Eric's.

    Bass is a very special voice (particulary when it comes to speaking). All the other voices are unintersting, very common and don't really grab your attention. That's what I've observed so far.
    By the way; not all baritones sound dark 'n' rich (think of the lyric ones) that are called 2nd tenors in the choir singing system. Even a dark one won't sound that as truly dark as a bass 'cuz the pitch isn't low. I'm wondering if there is a bass-baritone speaking voice though ?!
    Speaking of the male speech voices there are only 3 to mention: tenor (a high, light voice), baritone (a rich voice) and bass (a low, deep voice). I personally do not add bari. to the deep voice section.
