Always! Even post production muzzle flashes used in what appears to be an entirely realistic way can just seem... off, even when they look utterly flawless in post production. Then you realise that the SFX crew didn't really take into account what real muzzle flashes look like, when they happen, how they vary depending on lighting, and the end result is almost always over the top. The same goes for shitty Foley sounds... anyone who has ever fired even a blank pistol, let alone a real gun with blanks, or worse still live rounds knows how bloody loud they are. Very few films I've seen capture the noise of a firearm being shot in a small space, it's truly larger than life, and yet they go for a tinny pop of a gunshot! Massive respect to films like The Matrix and Scarface (particularly the ending of that, the re-release added AWFUL lifeless gunshots) for such good effects. They aren't that realistic, but they just "fit".
OMG keanu sounding out the gun noises is so adorable and childlike. He's so young here. I WILL ALWAYS WATCH HIM BECAUSE I GREW UP WATCHING HIS MOVIES. I LOVE KEANU REEVES.

I was starting to know Boards of Canada when I begun to experiment with LSD and that was the first time that I think in Matrix theory as a posibility of reality. (For sure, the Matrix concept, not all these bullets).
Usually I fall in love with the male characters in movies but in Matrix I was totally stunned of Trinity.Carrie-Ann Moss did an excellent, amazing job,I love her.

It goes to show that it just takes on role to make or break your career at the same time. She's been finished, (just doing tv now) and will never do another blockbuster. Ever. EVERRRR!!!! It goes to show that why Keanu is the STAR, and not her, nor Fishburne, NOR Wachowski Bros. (Sisrs now). Everyone turned into a pumpkin afterwards. Except Mr. Reeves himself. He. Is. The. Star. And. If we talk about Carrie-Ann's career if Trinity's role was given to someone else may be the same would have happened. All I can say is all actors give their best and the Matrix Trilogy is still the best.
The Matrix was only the The Wachowski's second movie and it's a masterpiece! How did they even think up the story and the "bullet time" concept? Plus, they were smart enough do so many practical effects and stunts. So much filmmaking talent, amazing movie!
the main story (reality as a simulation) wasnt rly new... its based on the book simulacron 3 from the 60s.. Even germany made a movie about it in the early 70s called welt am draht (World on a wire). Of course with a strong cheesy 70s vibe. And without those cool special FX. Also the Movie 13th floor was about the same topic and filmed the same year as matrix but came out months to late. :-)
@@gabrielhowardMKE Sure, and the movie Sniper with Tom Berenger too. It looked like they glued plexiglass rods to the end of a bullet to simulate it cutting through the air. But the Wachowski's really refined it, with the 360° wrap around view. No one had done anything that sharp before, that I recall. All of the still camera shots stitched together... that was super innovative, I think.
One Man Army Yeah watch the bank robbery/city shootout in heat. The sound makes it one of the best shootouts ever. But especially with this scene from the matrix I think the visuals take a big part of the effect because of all the concrete flying through the air.
HELL yeah... best sound effects for firearms in film history! But with that said, they just recorded the set! Good choice really, they use extremely powerful blanks to get the best looking muzzle flash, and they're easily 90% as loud as live ammunition. It's not always practical to record the set, but it always astounds me how crap the sound designers can be. Under what circumstances does it sound good to have a handgun go "pew pew" when being fired down a long corridor! Real guns (or blanks) being fired indoors sound immense, yet the designers often get it so wrong.
They did rebuild them, quite a few times! Very time consuming, so they practised extremely hard, but they did start from scratch for certain shots. At 1:25 you can hear Carrie-Anne Moss screaming in frustration as she gets caught on the wires. That shot was reset, and they either got it right, or made it out of two shots (like the latter to me).
When Keanu falls around the corner and the music just keeps playing like its supposed to be intense that THE ONE just ate shit on some rocks... Behind the scenes are always the best

Uno de los mejores filmes de todos los tiempos. Yo siento que Matrix resurection no tiene lo que a esta le sobraba. ( y en general la trilogia es muy buena)
How did they make the stone pillars look like they got shot? at 3:17 as those pieces fall they sound like a very weak material. But how do they make it almost seemingly explode?
72speedway Yeah probably something like that. Almost seems sorta dangerous but I dunno. Also after watching this again I just have even more unanswered questions. The fact that a lot of this scene was filmed without CGI is really awesome and just really makes me wonder how they did it.
It's all special super lightweight, highly realistic looking building materials, as said before, destroyed by highly scripted squibs (tiny electrically fire explosives). Set off a whole wall of them and it looks as if the wall is being destroyed in a hail of bullets, just with minimal danger to the crew. As you can imagine, everything has to be reset with every shot, but it's totally worth it. Everything on set is dangerous, but they work hard to ensure risks are minimised. Even the guns aren't all that safe, they chuck out foot long muzzle flashes which will cause flash burns, and actually cause severe injury at point blank range.
If I remember correctly, they had a stage/warehouse nearby full of dozens of ready-made pillars, so all they had to do is know WHICH ONE to replace and then fill it with squibs according to where the previous one was.
One of the movie that changed the course of action movie at its time. Every once a years there will be such movie like this who got a breathrough, a new kind, a revolutionaries and lately that title goes to John Wick series
3:02 That's the moment I really remember the 1st time saw the movie back when 4:3 was. you can see the muzzle device flex a bit when the m16 hits the floor (rubber?). only visible on 4:3 movie format, later they cut it in to 16:10/16:9 format and you can't see those muzzle device flex when hits the floor.
Yeah it's a rubber prop gun. They use them when they need to throw guns around to avoid damage. The props tend to be easier to spot because of their low detail/flexibility so they pass them quickly through a scene.
It's hard to believe that this film was made in the late 90's. It looked so crazy, way ahead of It's time!
The answer is alot of anime influences.

Greatest Action movie scenes... Redefined the action in movies... Matrix changed everything
The funniest part is when Keanu trips over his long ass coat! XD

Wow! All these visual effects are still so legit and man made, props for the work. Its no like todays CGI of fake fire and green screen visuals.
best movie forever
this movie never gets old!!!
No wonder why the movie is ageless - barely any cgi
*BREATHTAKING*
2:13 Keanu becomes a TRex 😲❤
This will forever be one of the most creative, unique, and adrenaline-pumping movies of all time! It’s innovation and legacy continues to be very strong :)
Uno de los mejores filmes de todos los tiempos. Yo siento que Matrix resurection no tiene lo que a esta le sobraba. ( y en general la trilogia es muy buena)
One of the best shooting scenes in movie history 👏👏👏
I wonder if they planned that piece of pillar falling out at the end because that was brilliant!
Indeed they did. The final cut shows the section of pillar crumbling after Neo and Trinity get in the elevator.
Or perhaps it happened on accident while in frame?
No, it was scripted; it was completely intentional.
*****
Proof? Just curious.
The final cut is here on YT, you'll have to dig a little.
this raw footage shows the importance and the MAGIC of film editing...
How did they make the stone pillars look like they got shot? at 3:17 as those pieces fall they sound like a very weak material. But how do they make it almost seemingly explode?
I think they use small explosives with computerized detonators.
Like a small squib with like powered foam made to look like concrete. Like sponges in gardening, but gray colored.
man !! I didn't know all this was practical not CGI ... woah .. kudos to everyone involved in production ...
this 4:11minutes is better than the matrix 4 lol
One of the movie that changed the course of action movie at its time. Every once a years there will be such movie like this who got a breathrough, a new kind, a revolutionaries and lately that title goes to John Wick series
beauty of the slow motion
3:02
That's the moment I really remember the 1st time saw the movie back when 4:3 was.
you can see the muzzle device flex a bit when the m16 hits the floor (rubber?).
only visible on 4:3 movie format, later they cut it in to 16:10/16:9 format and you can't see those muzzle device flex when hits the floor.
Yeah it's a rubber prop gun. They use them when they need to throw guns around to avoid damage. The props tend to be easier to spot because of their low detail/flexibility so they pass them quickly through a scene.
I used to put this DVD in _just_ to watch this scene.
The sisters did a great job directing this movie
