  • In this video, our expert Gent shows the build-up of a strain gauge torque sensor and explains its working principle.
    A torque shaft sensor is a powerful and universal measuring instrument that not only measures torque accurately, but also provides precise angle and speed measurements. It is based on strain gauge (SG) technology, with the SG’s applied on a measuring shaft and interconnected to a Wheatstone bridge.
    When a torque is applied to the measuring shaft, two strain gauges are stretched and the other two compressed, causing the electric resistances of the strain gauges to change in opposite directions. From this change in resistance, the elongation of the strain gauges and thus the acting torque can be derived.
    In addition to the torque signal, this sensor also offers speed and angle measurement. The absolute angle measuring system includes a magnet wheel, a sensor board with two sensors and a sophisticated signal processing. The high-resolution angle system with a tolerance of 0.03° is always used when the torque must be determined at an exact position: for example in end-of-line testing of gearboxes, combustion engines and electric motors, and in various pump tests during production.
