I'm pausing this to say this now. I don't know if you will notice and mention it later. Several episodes ago you noticed the crew were wearing new uniforms. The real Julian is stoll in the old uniform, he was obviously captured before the uniform changed. That basically means that a Changeling performed surgery on Sisko, and delivered the O'Brien baby.
No, a Bajoran midwife delivered the O'Brien's child due to their traditional values. I do feel sorry for Bashir, since everything bad tends to happen to him or Miles.
It's episodes like these that I look forward to the most! Seeing your reactions, Ollie, to some of THE BEST story arcs and twists in all of Star Trek, well... it's almost like watching it all again for the first time! In fact, that is why I enjoy reaction channels so much. Because one of my favorite things to do is watch favorites of mine with friends and family who have never seen them before. Sharing the best of my favorites and gauging their reactions! So, watching RUclipsrs react to my favorite movies and shows is almost as good! 😀 But that's just why I subscribe to reaction channels! The reason I support this one (and the only one that I do!) is because after developing a true love and appreciation for Star Trek through other of its episodes and movies, you decided to post your full series reaction to my all-time favorite Trek, Deep Space Nine! Ollie, you really have no idea how much I look forward to Wednesdays! Every Wednesday morning sitting at my desk, before I even start working, I'm watching your next reaction! It is a genuine highlight of my week and seeing how INTO IT you get is just... well, my face hurts sometimes from smiling so hard! Like just now! Your reaction to "To be continued..." was PRICELESS! 😀 But, boy, please! 3 days?! Try a whole week between 2-parters! Or 3 months between season finale/premiere 2-parters! "3 days!" Pfft! 😛 I said this at the beginning of your DS9 journey but, OH MY GOODNESS!! You are in for some stuff, boyo!! And I CANNOT wait!!
Now that we know that Bashir is a changeling (but no one on the station knows) it makes sense that he was waiting for Garak with a phaser in the shuttle craft - and notice what Changeling-Bashir says before they fire on the worm-hole: "Here goes nothing" - the station personnel don't know that he actually means it - that he is the one who sabotaged it." But also note that when Tain asked Garak: "Are we alone", and Garak said "Yes", it spoke volumes of how he sees Bashir - his onlz real friend in the world - and Bashir's look of "Oh my gosh - Garak trusts me to be here as a "fly on the wall'. We see Garak "unfiltered" in this moment, and Bashir's look when he realizes that Garak is Tain's son - remember that Bashir visited Tain and Tain had said that he wanted Garak to live a long life in exile, surrounded by people who hate him -and that the sentiment came from his heart!
I mean, everything changes in season five, everything comes together, everything is paid off. It's just awesome too, to get Peter Allan Fields (Duet, Necessary Evil, Blood Oath) back for another episode. For the Uniform is so, so good and so fun and so much of a reward after building the Maquis and the relationship between Eddington and Sisko (and everyone on the station). But then the two-parter hits that just destroys the whole of 90s Star Trek status quo. Technically the Dominion War began pretty much with The Way of the Warrior. But now it's taken every major plot thread and pulled them all together. The Maquis suddenly are... well, we shall see.
For real, though. Seasons 1-2 are Federation vs. Bajorans. Seasons 3-nowish are bits of Dominion stuff mixed with Federation vs. Klingons. Now through the end of the show is 😳😮🤯
It's fun after watching the Tain reveal to go back and watch Garak's conversations with Odo about Tain in season 3, where Odo is trying to figure out why Garak still cares so much for Tain even though he had him exiled. It works perfectly.
Yeah, 3x20-21 really does make a lot more sense now (not that anything felt amiss on first viewing). It also makes Tain's first appearance, in 2x22, take on a different feel.
I always loved how they had the real Bashir wearing the old uniform which lets us know some time has passed as we have seen the new grey uniforms in the last two or three episodes since the uniform change.
I remember how optimistic you were when Eddington was first introduced. You should put together an Eddington reaction reel to show how he totally had you believing he was Starfleet's finest until he clearly wasn't.
But he WAS! He never would have gotten so far if he wasn't Starfleet 's finest- but somewhere, he found a life outside Starfleet. Love. A sense of home. And the Federation betrayed all of it.
You've had a few tastes of the storytelling power of this show, they are about to come thick and fast and take you to places you can't yet imagine. I'm really excited to see you get this far and can't wait to see your reactions to come. To put some perspective, you have so far only seen 2 of my top 10 DS9 episodes, 2.5 including In Purgatory's Shadow, though I know you've already watched By Inferno's Light.
We see Angry Sisko quite a bit, but we do not see Snarling With Rage Sisko often :) So fun! It's interesting seeing the two episodes paired like this; obviously the two parter is more commonly watched together if you plan out that sort of thing. But it makes it more clear it's not a coincidence seeing the book close on Eddington just in time to open a new one with the Dominion. And fun trying to remember which of the many twists came in part 1 rather than part 2 haha - part 1 sure has MOST of the big ones :D
I’m glad you loved the scene with the crippled Defiant leaving the station in the first episode. I love the music too and the whole scene is really well done. It felt very “old school” and nautical, having to do everything manually and step by step. It felt different because everything’s normally automated by simply pressing a few buttons and getting the computer to do the rest. Plus, it was cool seeing Cadet Nog working on the Defiant for the first time too.👏
In Purgatory's Shadow is one of my favorite episodes that ends on a cliffhanger. Seeing all those ships coming through the wormhole is a sight to behold! This episode marks the first appearance of the large Dominion Battlecruiser! About as large as a Galaxy class starship, it's a crazy powerful tank. The old Star Trek Magazine had a great article on the design of the ship and how The Dominion was envisioned as "The anti-Federation" where the Founders have a sorta reverse Prime Directive that saw the Founders manipulating several species' genetics to be smarter, better fighters, more loyal, etc. The big Dominion cruisers were supposed to have large bridges crewed by several Dominion member species- the species with the painted faces (who bought Quark's Tulaberry Wine), the Karenma and the Wadi (from Move Along Home) in particular. Unfortunately, that would have cost a fortune on top of the effects costs in episodes with the big cruiser. Great to see you FINALLY meeting General Martok! Hell of an actor playing the General and he really gets the chance to restart his character from this point- he's not the honorless jerk the changling had made him out to be! A mention of ST: First Contact! I can see how a twelve hour long running battle with the Borg would have diminished Starfleet 's ability to respond to the Dominion threat at that moment! Ollie kept saying how different Zial looked- and it's because she's a changling! Or possibly a different actress! Yes, not only was the part recast, but the makeup team decided to give her a more rose undertone to her grey makeup instead of the "cool" grey tones used before. A good choice- it gives her a radiant flush to her skin which makes her look lovely. Andrew Robinson kills it as Garak as usual. His plan to join Starfleet was a classic. Work and Jadzia's love continues to flourish and it really grew in me right until Worf has that affair with a horseshoe crab.
The show has been REALLY good with episode titles haha! Also, judging from real Bashir’s uniform, fake Bashir has been around since AT LEAST Rapture. So it’s weird watching those episodes knowing that’s a changing interacting with everyone, including saving Sisko’s life by performing that surgery! 😂
17:30 this episode is EXTREMELY significant, because here we see, front and center, Sisko being *_THE_* Starfleet officer, until Eddington pushes to shove. THIS is where Sisko realizes he _can_ jump the regulation, and this leads to the Vreenak plot. writing like this will never be topped.
For the Uniform is one of the best in DS9. Absolutely love seeing the Defiant "putting out to sea", the technology cut back by Eddington's attack and the crew manually operating the starship. This is also another glimpse of how Sisko is different from other Star Trek Captains.
"This looks like a two-parter..." Going forward, DS9 became very serialized, with arcs lasting several episodes. The opening 'Last Time on..." intros wound up lasting minutes. It may be something you prepare for when arranging reactions, if you want to try to get a whole arc in.
The actor playing Captain Sanders was Eric Pierpoint who is best known for starring in an older TV series called Alien Nation. It was pretty good. You might want to check it out. James Horan who plays the lead Jem "Hadar has played in many Star Trek projects. This is a new older actress playing Ziyal. Melanie Smith.
When Ollie passed along his regrets for wearing his shirt in the video I tried to think of any cat connection for these episodes. Thank you for providing one, you are upholding the honor of your profile pic :P
The thing with for the uniform that most people don't realise is that Sisko is fully covered for his act, General Order 24 gives Starfleet captains full authority to destroy a planet if it's deemed that they represent a threat to the federation. Under modern day rules of engagement we would see it as war crimes but in this universe it is covered in the starfleet charter
Tain is indeed Garak's father. Check out the Die is Cast - Meela, the house keeper. She's his mother. Or strongly implied. Tain had an affair with "the maid". That's Garak. Meela is featured later. She's a nice lady.
Tain was such a great character even if he was in only 5 episodes. The holo communicator in For the Uniform was never used again, guess they didn't like it.
I love all the sound of relayed orders in For The Uniform - it gives the episode a more nautical navy feel to it and, as Ollie pointed out, the score is REALLY rousing and inspiring.
I wonder what Eddington from the Mirror Universe would be like? A villain with a heart of gold? A spy?🤔 No matter what else there's to say about Michael Eddington, he's played by a hell of an actor! Him and Avery Brooks really work well butting heads!
The real Bashir was wearing the old uniform, so he must have been replaced somewhere before the episode *Ascent* before they switch uniform in *Rapture*
NOT CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION PROBLEMS. JUST STUFF I WANT TO SAY: FOR THE UNIFORM (IMDb Rating 8.0) 2:07 The weapon Eddington points at Sisko is the same Klingon disrupter that was assembled from parts of the Klingon's uniforms in the TNG episode "Heart of Glory". 5:52 Don't get too excited about those holo-communicators. The concept didn't work as well as they thought it would, and it just added expense to the budget. 8:31 "I've never seen Sisko so angry." Wait. 😁 IN PURGATORY'S SHADOW (IMDb Rating 8.8) 24:43 Derek Garth was a grip who was killed in an auto accident on his way to work on this episode. This episode was written by a Wolfe and a Behr. 😁 38:49 Bashir is like, "What the hell is Worf wearing?" 40:10 Dukat: "You're my daughter". Are you sure? This is the third Ziyal since she was introduced in the show.
Have you seen the movie Krull? It's a fantasy movie from the '80s and stars Kenneth Marshall, who plays Commander Eddington. I think you would really like it.
Oh nice, yeah! I was trying to think of any other, plus any Evil Picard which I don't think we ever got? But Doctor Noah scratches that itch real good. There's also Dax's zhintara (sp?). Of course neither case is him playing evil-himSELF like Mirror Kirk did.
Hawk caught Colwyn, (1980s reference), plus I think that Borg attack was separate from "First Contact" as the Defiant would've required extensive repairs and the stardate was later in the year (unless Q's been fecking things up again)
The real Bashir isn't wearing one of the "First Contact"-Uniforms first seeen in "Rapture", meaning the changeling-replacement was at least that long ago.
The uniform change makes it pretty clear: Bashir is wearing the old pre-First Contact uniform. Meaning it was actually a changeling Bashir that performed surgery on Sisko in Rapture (5x10).
So if that's Captain Sanders of the USS Melinche... And a navel Captain is the equivalent of a Navy Captain... Did we just meet Starfleets man in charge of chicken?
Of course you've previously seen the power-up and departure sequence of a Federation ship. Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Don't worry, you'll see it again in Voyager & Enterprise,...and perhaps again in DS9.
And so another RolyPolyOllie reaction goes into my Best Reactions Playlist. 1) holding up your hand as you looked around during the Bashir reveal. You looked like you wanted to run but didn't know where, while your upheld hand was asking for Divine help. 2) throwing yourself to the floor...."to be continued...3 days!" Your poor dog was looking like "Oh not this again." But most of all.... 3) that cat looking out of your pocket. Every time I looked at it...😂. You never disappoint.....Thank You! (Not that you need my approval)
For some, this was a turning point in their opinion of Sisko. Some think it was very un-Federation/Starfleet of him. Picard would have never done this ("I'm not Picard!") and I loved it. If you think this is as far as he'll go, you ain't seen nothing yet.
I really enjoy watching your reactions to my favourite Star Trek series! I reacted like you did when I found out about Changeling Bashir 😀 You are abot to see some of the very best episodes. In Purgatory's shadow and by Inferno's light are my favourite two part.
For the Uniform - I always enjoy the fact that they have to go through all the things that are normally done automatically by the computer. The overlapping instructions and dialogue is brilliant. And Les Miserables is a great book, long but great.
as i said before: siskos arc and character development really began with "the rapture", and avary brooks played it brilliantly. so, sit back and enjoy!
How would you survive the three days until you can see Part 2? Geez Ollie, man up and wait a full week (minimum, somerimes other things would push it to two weeks between episodes) like we had to when it was first broadcast.
I loved your reaction at the end of "In Purgatory's Shadow" That's how everyone felt who watched it originally. Just be glad you don't have to necessarily wait another week to see what happens, haha
The whole idea of having them all in the same internment camp together I like to think of as an omage to The Great Escape, where the Nazis put all the "rotten eggs" in one basket, also because they are also devising a plan to escape. In fact you can also relate Garak with Danny from The Great Escape later on...
When I realized you didn't time the season how I thought, and the bit with the dominion coming through wouldn't be in the same bid as the next ep, I internally reacted like you did on the floor 😂
Seeing your reaction to In purgatory's shadows is like seeing me when I watch it for the first time in 98/99. So many great memories of this show and that time. Epic
Melanie Smith, aka best Ziyal, wooo! She ages almost as fast as Alexander Rozhenko; my headcanon is that Cardassians are basically a lizard species so their biology is more different from ours than most and they reach adulthood more quickly haha. (Alexander has no excuse, for anything.)
@@brucechmiel7964 I thought it was just 3, but yeah it seems like this came from "what's a good storyline for a Cardassian stuck on the station? pair up with another Cardassian stuck on the station! do we think Garak is good with kids? hahahahaha so anyway can we just have her magically be older? why not!" I have no regrets :)
I was so looking forward for you to react to these two episodes, I can’t wait until your reaction gets uploaded here in RUclips for the part two of purgatory shadow
Klingons are supposed to off themselves rather than be taken prisoner, yes? I always hated when they took obvious jokes like “Klingons don’t take prisoners” and “I multiply my time estimates by four so I look like a miracle” and turn them into cannon. Take this exchange: GARAK: Aren't you Klingons supposed to kill yourselves when you're taken prisoner? WORF: Not when there are still enemies to fight. MARTOK: Or hope of escape. Well DUH. How can you be taken and held as a prisoner if there aren’t still enemies to fight? Why wouldn’t there always be hope of escape? Bleh.
I realize I'm watching weeks late from your real time and you may already have moved, but that doorknob is in a perfect place to be really distracting, particularly when it's centered on Dax's nose. I was hoping you'd put a t-shirt or something on that doorknob! ;) I just hope the background in your new place (where the translucent video shows) is free from distractions.
The change in uniforms (which was only done to match the uniforms in "First Contact") actually come in handy here, because it retroactively gives us a general idea how long Bashir has been a Changeling. (BTW, Alexander Siddig was NOT told about the change until this episode).
I think the continuity of changeling Bashir's presence has always been a hot topic. We obviously take every episode he's been in the new uniform as the changeling version yet it does seem more than a month in time has passed. Really is difficult for the events to add up.
In case you weren't aware. Sisko launched a weapon capable of killing every man woman and child on the planet and didn't get approval from Starfleet, I doubt they would have approved that anyways but my point is unless I'm mistaken what Sisko did could be classed as a war crime, which would have got Sisko kicked out of starfleet and thrown in prison, but the writers seemed to sweep that part under the rug. Fans still argue about it on fan pages.
EVERY good captain uses a WMD or three in the course of their career. Heck, in Picard's case, he was getting into trouble for NOT using the one against the Borg. Scotty used Tribbles against the Klingons. Picard made Wesley an ensign. Things happen.
In case you weren’t aware what Sisko did was legal under both our current laws and the Federation’s laws and retaliation is a fundamental tenant underpinning MAD which is what has prevented a third world war so Sisko’s actions weren’t also necessary. The reason Starfleet didn’t give him shit is because they approve of what he did. It’s why when Picard didn’t use the Borg Virus they did give him shit. Sisko’s actions were justified by law, justified by military doctrine and in line with prior Starfleet views.
I don't know about legality here, but with what happens in the very next episode, and the fact that Sisko is so important to the Bajoran people, he basically would get a pass because Starfleet can't afford to remove him.
I was so pissed off at the end of this part 1 because l had to wait over a month to purchase the next 2 episodes on video cassette. It used to cost me $45 dollars for one 2 episode tape to get it imported from the UK, because it took longer to come out here in Australia.
If you thought for the uniform was good, I absolutely cannot wait for you to watch in the pale moonlight ❤
To quote a Vorlon: "And so it begins".

Me neither.
Angry Sisko 🔪🔪
this is more than a 2 parter.. this pretty much begins the story that lasts til the final episode. you really will need to watch them all
Yeah, welcome to part 1 of 64.
I wonder what Eddington from the Mirror Universe would be like?
A villain with a heart of gold? A spy?🤔
No matter what else there's to say about Michael Eddington, he's played by a hell of an actor!
Him and Avery Brooks really work well butting heads!
The real Bashir was wearing the old uniform, so he must have been replaced somewhere before the episode *Ascent* before they switch uniform in *Rapture*
oh good catch, i never noticed that before
Lol aw Huxley 😂
"Daddy are you okay???"
Bashir's uniform is a nice touch but really struggling with the idea that a Changeling did that operation on Sisko
Ooh I never thought of that. What if he just said it was the only way he'd live because the visions could harm their plans?
"How many episodes has Bashir..." - look at the Uniform. He's wearing the old one.
I could've watched a entire season of Sisko vs Eddington
NOT CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION PROBLEMS. JUST STUFF I WANT TO SAY:
FOR THE UNIFORM (IMDb Rating 8.0)
2:07 The weapon Eddington points at Sisko is the same Klingon disrupter that was assembled from parts of the Klingon's uniforms in the TNG episode "Heart of Glory".
5:52 Don't get too excited about those holo-communicators.
The concept didn't work as well as they thought it would, and it just added expense to the budget.
8:31 "I've never seen Sisko so angry." Wait. 😁
IN PURGATORY'S SHADOW (IMDb Rating 8.8)
24:43 Derek Garth was a grip who was killed in an auto accident on his way to work on this episode.
This episode was written by a Wolfe and a Behr. 😁
38:49 Bashir is like, "What the hell is Worf wearing?"
40:10 Dukat: "You're my daughter".
Are you sure? This is the third Ziyal since she was introduced in the show.
Have you seen the movie Krull? It's a fantasy movie from the '80s and stars Kenneth Marshall, who plays Commander Eddington. I think you would really like it.
We got a pretty good Evil Sisko in Our Man Bashir...
Enough of a reaction to get Huxley worried.
Thank you, Oliver and Huxley! 🖖 Can't wait to see your new apartment.
43:23 that was me back in '97. Except i had to wait ages for the next VHS tape release
In Purgatory’s Shadow is the start of the most INSANE story!
Val Jean is the name of the Maquis ship in Star trek Voyager.
"COMMANDER, I SAID LAUNCH TORPEDO'S!"
It's the 3rd actress playing Zial, so she looks older. // Martok was never on DS9, we always saw changling Martok (4x01/02, 5x01).
Of course you've previously seen the power-up and departure sequence of a Federation ship. Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Don't worry, you'll see it again in Voyager & Enterprise,...and perhaps again in DS9.
Derek Garth was a production staff member on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, where he worked as a "grip", a lighting and rigging technician.
I love that you finally started realizing anyone could be a changling 😂😂😂
And so another RolyPolyOllie reaction goes into my Best Reactions Playlist.
1) holding up your hand as you looked around during the Bashir reveal. You looked like you wanted to run but didn't know where, while your upheld hand was asking for Divine help.
2) throwing yourself to the floor...."to be continued...3 days!" Your poor dog was looking like "Oh not this again."
But most of all....
I reacted like you did when I found out about Changeling Bashir 😀
You are abot to see some of the very best episodes.
In Purgatory's shadow and by Inferno's light are my favourite two part.
For the Uniform is when Sisko becomes a war criminal. Even Worf hesitates when the order to poison the planet of civilians is given.
For the Uniform - I always enjoy the fact that they have to go through all the things that are normally done automatically by the computer. The overlapping instructions and dialogue is brilliant.
And Les Miserables is a great book, long but great.
Great reactions! Glad to see your enthusiasm for these great episodes.
as i said before: siskos arc and character development really began with "the rapture", and avary brooks played it brilliantly. so, sit back and enjoy!
Here we go, the start of the Star Trek equivalent of WW2. Possibly the greatest story arc of star trek.
How would you survive the three days until you can see Part 2?
Geez Ollie, man up and wait a full week (minimum, somerimes other things would push it to two weeks between episodes) like we had to when it was first broadcast.
I always imagine my toilet being a changling when sitting on it, but unlike Picard calls Riker, I call it Number Two.
Please tell me you watched By Inferno's Light right after IPS. Those two episodes are meant to be watched one after the other.
Doesn’t help the fact that they didn’t want to pair up Andrew Robinson with a teenage girl. The character was played by four different actresses.
Take this exchange:
GARAK: Aren't you Klingons supposed to kill yourselves when you're taken prisoner?
How are you going to survive for 3 days? Psh... back when this showed for the first time, we had to wait for SEVEN days!
The change in uniforms (which was only done to match the uniforms in "First Contact") actually come in handy here, because it retroactively gives us a general idea how long Bashir has been a Changeling. (BTW, Alexander Siddig was NOT told about the change until this episode).
That's why sisko is the best captain ever!!
I think the continuity of changeling Bashir's presence has always been a hot topic. We obviously take every episode he's been in the new uniform as the changeling version yet it does seem more than a month in time has passed. Really is difficult for the events to add up.
It's Dominion Fight Club!
Yeah, Martok is back.
Glory awaits us!
"WE'RE GONNA OBTAIN TAIN.".LOL..goober!
Martok!!! My favorite Klingon.
U cannot understand the greater good.
@jasoncaldwell5627 That is true but if it's OK for starfleet officers to use that excuse then the same answer can be used for ppl like Eddington.
This is the start of the Dominion War.
Odo could have used a waterbed and become the mattress at night
The Sisko is the Siskoiest he's ever been in this episode. One of the best of the series.
I was so pissed off at the end of this part 1 because l had to wait over a month to purchase the next 2 episodes on video cassette. It used to cost me $45 dollars for one 2 episode tape to get it imported from the UK, because it took longer to come out here in Australia.
