I've never heard the phrase "image-based sexual abuse" before but I think that it does a much better job at centering the idea that it's an abusive action.
I listened to Obama's memoir and I'd definitely recommend going that way for the book. Even though it's really long I wanted to have part 2 right away because it was so easy to get sucked into his storytelling.
The Bluest Eye is actually not about learning to accept yourself but the repercussions of NOT learning to accept yourself. It’s even harder to get through because it’s from the point of view of children.

I feel a little silly saying this but the first book I bought this year was the Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel The Promise; but hey, I'm excited to get to it eventually!
I ended up getting both The Afterlife of Holly Chase and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue at the beginning of this year! Partly because of the overall hype and partly because of all the praise you have given both; super excited to give them a read!

I picked up Legendborn yesterday after hearing so many good things about it, and so far it is absolutely AMAZING. Would recommend to anyone, we love to see a POC main character in fantasy a novel, because we all know that doesn't happen nearly enough

just a warning: that's really not an accurate summary of the bluest eye! I know you obviously haven't read it yet, but I feel like you should have some idea as to what's within the story when you decide to read it, or else you'll be in for a bit of a shock. it's an incredibly heavy and difficult book to read with big trigger warnings for pedophilia and sexual abuse, written from the perspective of children about another girl who lives in their neighbourhood. whilst western beauty standards, colourism, class etc are all themes within the book, it's much more disturbing than that.

@@emmmabooks I was going to comment this too! The Bluest Eye is one of my favorite books but damn it packs a dark, difficult punch. I totally understand and not faulting you for explaining it that way. I just personally don’t want you going into this book looking for an uplifting read when it’s actually really dark and left me in tears (and not the good, therapeutic kind)
Oh my gosh I perked up when I heard CBT- it’s so fascinating! You should pick up The Coddling of the American Mind, it’s a fun read about the psychology of “cancel culture.”
