Update on video quality (or lack of!): I’ve ruled out the software. My next step is to try a video app that allows me to film from my iPhone in 4K. Fingers crossed that solves it!
Not a bad fist of it! The pot size and clips were good but the timing, not so much. Cattleyas can be tricky to regrow roots, even for the experienced. By the way, embrace the 'thumbs down' response! It brings no disadvantage to your channel and it means someone watched at least part of the video 😁 😂 🤣 Get a little bigger and you'll get a regular supply of them to keep you in your place 🙄 😏 Just look on them as a sign of growth 😁 😂 PS Gave you a little shout out on today's community page. Hope it helps bring the numbers up.
By 'timing' do you mean I should have waited for Spring, or maybe for the new growths to grow more? And thanks, Rachel, I appreciate all the advice I can get. I've just made a video on all the feedback I had about the repot but yours has come after I've already made it - although someone else mentioned that Roger prefers to wait for new roots before repotting Cattleyas. (I'm trying to come to terms with the 'thumbs-down-brigade'! I don't know why they don't just unsubscribe? It's a daft system really - it tells you nothing of any use for future videos.) And a thousand thanks for the shout-out!👍😃🙏
Growing orchids is a learning experience. After not getting any cattleya orchid to bloom I finally found one that bloomed for me. Then I found another way to kill it. Currently I have two Cattleya orchids that's growing. One was like yours. Trimmed up dead roots and put her in a plastic pot and she is giving me roots and a growth.
Haha yeah I know what you mean. Very often when we say plants are ‘easy’ it’s simply that we have the right conditions for them. No plant is easy if you give the wrong conditions - hence my entire greenhouse of plants are hard because I don’t live much further south! Pleased to hear your cattleyas are doing well, Jay. Fingers crossed for mine!
I enjoyed this video. Going to watch part 2 now and see what happened. I am not too experienced with catts but I thought you did a great job. Thank you.
Crikey that's such an old video - I'd only just started growing orchids at that point. I'm glad you found something useful in there and hopefully the second one was even more useful! 😀
For a first time... great result 👍🏼 I hope it does well for you now .. I keep the center wire upright and tie the back pseudobulbs to the wire... doesn’t look as clean a finish as yours, but after new roots establish themselves, I remove the supporting wire and just leave the middle one as back up to train new growths into upright growth, if need be. The center wire also helps to support any flower spikes that may droop over by the weight of the flower. Once a plant is well strong to hold its own flower spike upright, then there’s no need to help it... the center wire is super useful ... if you like, next repot, keep it upright and bend the end sticking up, so you don’t poke an eye out 😬
Thanks Nina - good advice! I'm a little bit worried about not being able to see any roots - so watering will be guess-work. But I've always found terra-cotta pots are pretty good at pulling moisture out of media. At any rate - there are no roots yet! So I guess it won't be needing a great deal of water for some time..🤣
Tropical Plants at 53 Degrees true... but I would mist the leaves ever so often with some calmag / seaweed ... just to give it something ... humidity is key when no roots are around to absorb some nutrients
Ah thanks I'll do that. My humidity is averaging around 80% at this time of year - and that's even without the fogger on. But I'll spray a bit of cal/mag too. I saw Svetlana do that too (Happy Orchids??).
I've recently seen a video where a Cattleya, like yours, had no viable roots and they placed it inside a length of broken crock with no media at all, and new roots had quickly established. You did very well for your first repot on video, which isn't easy, so thank you Geoff for sharing this. New roots can take ages to establish especially if new pseudobulbs develop first, so be extra careful not to over water. Happy New Year!
Thanks, Margaret - and to you too! Yes, I've also seen videos like that - it seems to me that pseudo-bulbs are very similar to 'true bulbs' - where everything comes from the bulb. You can demolish all the extra roots they grow but they can still come back strongly. Overwatering is my biggest concern as I now can't see what's going on underneath!
Not bad at all...probably if you tapped the pot a bit after you put the grit on the top it would settle more into the pot...the mix i mean..but looks great..thanks for sharing!
Pot size should be OK I think, because it's clay it'll dry the media out faster anyway? On the next repot you could take some of the old cut backbulbs off the back end to give it some more space. When it becomes an even bigger monster that is, with those 3 directions of growth at the front 😂 Might possibly be worth doing it before it roots too heavily and attaches to the clay, then you can shift the plant back a little. Have you seen Steven van kempen Lewis's latest video? I think it was on My Green Pets channel as a greenhouse tour. He literally puts his clay pots inside bigger pots and let's the cattleyas climb out of the pots 😂 looking forward to updates on this rootless monster! It'll probably start working on the new growths when the weather warms up but hopefully sooner 🤞😀
Thanks Annabel, I'll bear those excellent tips in mind. I might try to shift the rhizome back a little now before anything happens. I'm a bit behind with my watching - but hopefully I'll catch the My Green Pets video once everyone goes back to work and I've a little space to breathe!
II bet that Cattleya is breathing a sigh of relief! Nice repot! Ed gave me some advice on helping roots along... A very mild foliar spray with Epsom salt. About 20-25 tds. I'm happily seeing new roots and the leaves have thickened up quite noticeably after only a few weeks! I'll keep it in live moss till I see lots of new roots. Here's hoping. Have a great day! Ruth
Haha thanks Ruth! You'd better not watch my 'next but one' video on the effectiveness of foliar feeds!🤣 Actually, spoiler alert, I'm not against them - I'm just struggling to find a credible (and scientific) source that verifies as a fact that plants are able to take macronutrients through their leaves. (There are plenty of 'foliar feed sellers' that think it's a great idea!) Anyhow, I guess it's worth a try - nothing lost other than a bit of cal/mag or Epsom Salts. It's so difficult to actually test this stuff fairly. Thanks for watching - as ever!❤️
It may not matter in this case because it badly needed repotting but for other catts Roger suggests not repotting until there are signs of new roots developing. But if you have new growths started then new roots should follow soon after. Happy New Year Geoff/Jeff. I hope 2020 is a great growing year for you and your channel as well.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 Yeah, I'd have waited for new root growth but you do have swollen eyes so fingers crossed!
That'll be the red wine!

Rick L has the best videos on making clips, hangers etc.
Yes I’ve seen them. He’s more skilled than I am!

You know what? I should just do it and stop questioning everything! 🤣🤷♂️😜
@@Grow_Up_Man55 Agreed. The proof is in the pudding so to speak.
The repotting looks great. I hope it will get some roots. I’m hoping that spring will get some of my Catleyas to start root production 🍀
Thank you Anna I appreciate that! I'll be keeping a beady eye on it - but I find things only begin to happen when I forget about them!🤣

Will do, Susan.👍
Talk to a Roger or Ed ...they are awesome
Yes I follow them both, thanks.👍
Yes I knew you followed Ed but I wasn’t sure about Roger... they are so knowledgeable
