    The gmrs license is applied for on line, paid for on line and the FCC e-mails you your license about a day later for you to print out. Super easy and non complicated.

    I bought two tiny Walkie talkie radios. They are tiny, have a short stubby fixed antenna, 22 fixed channels and 1/2 watt of power. Seems like they would be classified as FRS radios, yet according to the manual, I need a GMRS license. Model of Radios are Uniden GRMS 520.
    Anyone know why they would be classified as GRMS?

      While the Motorola T600 "may" transmit on GMRS frequencies, no, the T600 cannot operate GMRS Repeaters since it does not have the ability to transmit specific access tones and does not have a receiver offset frequency. The "BIG DEAL" about GMRS is being able to access and transmit through local GMRS Repeaters with powerful transmitters at high locations with larger antennas. So Repeater setup on your GMRS mobile unit requires setup and novices often have problems without help, so much so that the FCC test question for a Amateur (HAM) Technician's license includes this question asking which is important for Repeater setup? (but don't worry, the FCC's GMRS license doesn't ask any technical questions!)
      FCC Question for HAM Technician license:
      Which of the following could be the reason you are unable to access a repeater whose output you can hear?
      Improper transceiver offset ?
      The repeater may require a proper CTCSS tone from your transceiver ?
      The repeater may require a proper DCS tone from your transceiver ?
      (All of these choices are correct)
      Good luck with your FRS-limited T600 and you can still LISTEN to GMRS radios on all frequencies.

  • @rickwilliams5817
    @rickwilliams5817 3 года назад +32

    I am not sure it was made clear that FRS and GMRS interoperate on the same channel frequencies and can talk to each other. The one exception is that FRS can use all 22 channels (non repeater), but only the handie-talkie GMRS radios can also operate similarly.
    The GMRS mobiles, which can also be used as base stations, are designed to not operate on channels 8-14 which only allow 500 milliwatts (.5 watts) ERP. FRS can operate 2 watts ERP on the 462 MHz channels but the equipment is less common and more expensive. GMRS can operate up to 5 watts ERP on the 462 MHz interstitial channels 1-7, but up to 50 watts output on the main channels (15-22). The other critical difference is that FRS can only use the built-in fixed antenna, while GMRS radios can use detached antennas fed through a feedline to an external antenna, such as on the roof of your vehicle or a tower at home. The antenna can be high gain and directional if you so desire. This tremendously extends the range from say, a base to mobile. Even a mobile to mobile with external antennas can communicate much farther than FRS HT's inside a vehicle, which is very short range.
    My experience with the Chinese made Midland MXT series and Wouxun KG-805 series radios have been quite satisfactory and compare well to my ham radio equipment that operates on the nearby 440 MHz band.

      Incorrect... FRS and GMRS only overlap on channels 1-7. On these, if you use hi power, it automatically qualifies as GMRS, requiring a license. If you use low power, it qualifies as FRS, no license required.
      8-14 are FRS low power only. No license needed.

    Greetings, a question, I have some Motorola model EM 1000 radios of which I want to put them at their maximum power, that is, in the specifications they indicate 20 miles in open countryside and 1.8 miles in urban areas, but in reality it does not reach 800 meters of distance. distance in the urban area since it begins to be heard blurry or not even heard. Could it be configured so that it is at its maximum power?

    • @BridgeComSystemsInc
      @BridgeComSystemsInc  Год назад

      Increasing the power output of your Motorola EM 1000 radios beyond legal limits is not recommended and may violate regulations. If you're experiencing reduced range, consider factors like terrain, obstacles, interference, battery status, and antenna condition. Ensure compliance with local regulations, and if problems persist, contact Motorola customer support or consult a professional radio technician.

      While they can be programmed to operate on those frequencies, they are not FCC approved. Further, FCC rules specifically prohibited having ham and FRS/GMRS transmit capability in the same radio. Those are the rules, what you choose to do is your business, not mine.

    • @carlleon1604

      @Anonymous Hacker I said nothing about enforcement, and you are correct that FCC enforcement is mostly a joke (note "mostly", there are many examples of actual enforcement resulting in significant fines and even jail time). However, rules exist in a society for a reason, and responsible citizens comply. I'm not telling you what to do, but it is reasonable to tell people in general what the rules are so they can make informed personal decisions.

    I have a GMRS Midland Mxt400 radio setup in my 05 Trailblazer. I absolutely love it. I use it when camping and on road trips. I get really good range out of it. I have a 36 inch antenna and the ghost antenna. I honestly prefer GMRS and I think its the best middle ground for anyone. $70 and no test. Just pay the $70 to the FCC and good for 10 years. Thats literally $7 a year. And you can have legally up to a 50 watt GMRS radio. Mines a 40 watt and I can get range up to 100 miles if I'm broadcasting to a repeater. More then what you will get from FRS or any cb radio.

And you're right, the manual's FCC compliance section does not state you need a license either. ... probably because they are lying to you about power figures. Frs is able to radiate 0.5 watts on chan 8-14 and 2 watts for the others. The radio claims 1 watts and 2.5 watts respectively. Probably measured at the source, not the antenna.
      Chances are it is being classed as an frs radio only as it meets all the frs standards and not the additional power for gmrs.

    I've seen a lot of people complaining about the fees associated with GMRS licensing, and I just don't get it. The FCC dropped the price from $70/10 years, down to $35/10 years. A lot of guides online still note the $70 fee because the change happened fairly recently (I believe in April of 2022?). Either way, reliable comms, albeit not super long range, with no need for "studying" to get a HAM license, and being able to run 50-watt transceivers, in addition to repeaters? To me it's a no brainer.
    Yes, I get the argument that radio waves are naturally occurring, so it seems stupid to have to pay to use them. But what do you expect? Uncle Sam has to get his share one way or other.
