Pathfinder 616: War for the Crown, Episode 1.1 - Introductions

  • What is Pathfinder 616?
    616 is the designation I'm giving to my own instance of the Pathfinder multiverse. Its the world in which all of my own adventures are taking place. More importantly though 616 is the series I'll be doing to provide adventure summaries, and I'm starting with War for the Crown, the adventure I'm currently running for my playgroup.
    Who are the Characters?
    Marius is a Half-Orc Brawler (Snakebite Striker archetype)
    Aurelius is a Human Wizard (Katheer Mage of the Veil school)
    Diyanah is a Human Monk (Scaled Fist archetype)
    Demi is a foreigner of mysterious origin
    Notes for GMs
    Some quick notes for people running War for the Crown themselves
    1.) The game technically starts with the Exaltation Day gala, but for my game I decided to start with a different garden party to do two things. First, give the players a chance to meet each other. Second, familiarize themselves with the complicated rules for Social Encounters in use in this game. This worked out great and I'd recommend other GMs do the same.
    2.) Some of my characters know each other going into the game (like Aurelius and Diyanah being childhood friends, or Demi and Marius having done a job together 20 years ago). This was all worked out during character creation and largely came from the players themselves. Player design choices will significantly affect the adventure as we play through it - as we'll see - and I'd expect the same will happen at your tables.
    3.) My characters are of different experience and age backgrounds. Aurelius and Diyanah are young men, 25 years old each. Marius is a little older and more world-weary (at 41). Demi as we meet her here is 88 years old. All of these characters are played as Level 1 characters, because the game requires balance. Just remember rules are an abstraction layer and to present a fun and balanced combat experience, but its perfectly fine for your players to begin the game with more or less real-world experience if you're comfortable with that as a GM.

    I think the voicing is well done! The characters are pretty easy to tell just by voice alone, and nobody seems to stand out in a negative way! Great job!

    This is great. I’ve tried to listen to Actual Play podcast in the past, and they never could hold my attention. They had too much “in between” and fumbling. This streamline approach to what happened in your game is the best possible choice in my opinion. Even more so since you wrote and preformed it so well.

    This is exactly what I wanted - you did very, very well voicing these characters, and setting up a "Highlights" section of adventure paths is honestly a great idea.
    I'm excited to listen to more, thank you for going into the effort. You did great.
    Personally, I know how stressful it is just trying to differentiate characters only with small voice tweaks - streaming visual novels is a real test of GMing and narration on the fly.

    What a great treat from you Mythkeeper! I think this is a terrific idea, seeing as how integral APs are to Pathfinder's evolving world, and this narrative reading brings in a more personal feeling than your usual essays on various topics. One suggestion I have is to label the player characters name flairs with a different color(so we know they are the protagonists) and perhaps have more short descriptions below each of the character's names as well (Like Demitria, for example), such as "Taldoran Aristocrat" or "Upcoming Tavern Owner" or something of the sort.

    Pathfinder 616? Oh, you just know this is going to be great with a title like that!
    In all seriousness, I absolutely love the way you're doing these. Not as a dry summary but rather how things turn out in one particular instance of the Pathfinder Multiverse.
    Superb storytelling as in all your videos and also really nice character dialogue. It just feels so natural how they talk to each other, like Marius' frantic search for words each time he talks to a noble. For the first few seconds I thought the voices kind of sounded a bit similar, but really they're actually quite unique (partly maybe bc of such well-written dialogue).
    All in all, great format and I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to critique here. Looking forward to any all future installments of it!

      Doing 4 consistent but different voices will definitely prove challenging. This is a superb idea, especially for those APs that have massive ramifications for the world. Golarion lore can sometimes reads like a comic in which you skipped an important crossover and now half the characters are dead and the continent is split in half.
    Although, just my first impression, the thumbnail and title definitely made it look like a _live-play show._ Live-plays are cool, but they have a specific audience, and I think it's narrower than for a... "scripted campaign-journal read-through," or whatever you want to call this. I mean, I really like live-plays, but getting to know four-five people, learning their table dynamics, seeing roleplay, gameplay _and_ chaff (rolls, rule verifications, chatter) can be fun, but also laborious, especially if unedited. I think calling them "Narrated Campaign Logs" would make it clear that it's scripted content that one could enjoy casually.

    I think this is a great idea! I love the setting and the idea of creating a unique history through playing these APs, though I sadly lack a group to play with as of yet. So this is a really fun way to capture that vibe. I think as a first episode this is a pretty strong start. Your voices all feel reasonably distinct, though it will probably be worth practicing and building up those skills more. Just continuing this series will probably end up giving you good practice anyway so I don't think it's something you need to worry about per se, just be aware of.
    You also do a good job of contextualizing scenes and NPCs, giving us the info we need to understand what's going on, and that's something I definitely think you should make a point of continuing to do. Especially if things reach a point where there isn't a character to give natural exposition, providing narration so we the listeners can know the essentials will be important.

      @@TheMythKeeper I do have a question regarding your cosmology/plainer videos. Would you still consider them accurate with the remaster 2nd edition going away from alignment? I imagine the answer is that “it’s complicated”

    • @TheMythKeeper
      @TheMythKeeper  Месяц назад

      So Rage of Elements pretty much confirmed that the outer planes are staying the same (ie: heaven, elysium, nirvana, axis, boneyard, maelstrom, hell, abaddon, the rifts [formerly abyss]). But the association between those planes and alignment is gone. So instead of Heaven being for LG alignment, its now for the altruistic, and instead of Nirvana being for NG aligment its now for those souls of peace and harmony etc... Everything is moving away from alignments and towards more descriptive points of view.

    • @-Plot-
      @-Plot- Месяц назад +1

      @@TheMythKeeper thank you for answering! You really do read all the comments. So the relative “order” of the cosmos is the same and the plains essentially stand for the same things. So souls would be turned into petitioners of the plains they acted mostly like during their life, instead of being assigned from their stat block. I believe that’s how it worked beforehand but now there aren’t issues of NPCs (or PCs) acting outside their inherent nature. I think that is so much better. Thank you again!

    • @TheMythKeeper
      @TheMythKeeper  Месяц назад

      @@-Plot- I do read all the comments! RUclips Studio has a nifty feature that lets me view all unread comments, once I've read something I can reply or heart it, and then it clears out from my inbox. However... there is a kind of a bug in their feature where it doesn't alert me if someone _replies_ to an existing comment. Which is kind of a big deal, as I sometimes do miss replies. If I'm not replying to a reply, that is most probably what happened.
      Also - yes, getting rid of alignments is a HUGE improvement to the game. Will there be some dangling alignment related stuff - sure. But does it make sense to have a more complicated perspective on ethics and morality than a grid of 9 possible dispositions - uh yes, for sure!

    BTW, my Celebrity Bard (Opera Diva) Caoimhe Kastner met a Ghast-ly end at a certain pump house.
    Due to proper pre-planning, I already had a character, her understudy, and Ladies Companion, Joíe Marie Darahan (Unearthed Cavalier), to pick up her mission. Just took her first level in Noble Scion.

    Love to see this idea, maybe in the future you could do the same with other APs. Unfortunately my group stopped close to the end of Book 4 of Age of Ashes because of responsibilities IRL and it would be fantastic to see the full story in the eyes of another party.

    • @TheMythKeeper

      My plan is to do all the APs eventually, but it will take some time. Its like 5-6 episodes per book, so 30 episodes in a full AP. I can basically crank out 1 AP / year at this rate. I'll probably hold votes to see what people want me to do next.

    I do enjoy this. Though this does remind me how peeved I am that there doesn't exist a canon progression of events in a game world with a progressing history like this. I can't be the only one who thinks it's horse-hockey that all the most significant events in Golarion's history always end up resolved by an unknown band of adventurers who's lives have no baring on history outside those few events.

    • @TheMythKeeper
      @TheMythKeeper  Месяц назад

      Well they don't... they resolved by known bands of adventurers whose lives have considerable baring - its just that those adventurers vary between playgroups.

      @@TheMythKeeper No problem! I think this format works well for more "roleplay" heavy APs since it allows you to more naturally explain things to the viewer as well, so this format helps someone like me who hasn't played some APs due to being new to pathfinder but wants to learn about the other APs.

    • @TheMythKeeper
      @TheMythKeeper  2 месяца назад +1

      @@RyanVonAegir Awesome, that was kind of the goal. I've scripted the first few episodes and War for the Crown Book 1 will be 5 episodes in all. If you enjoy it, watch through this and then find a group of friends to play through it with. It will be worth it, but your adventure will naturally come out quite different from mine just because of the different characters they will be playing.

    Amazing! I've been following your channel since the beginning, and it's amazing to see you expand into knew content. I appreciate the effort you put into editing the videos and your voice work is pretty good 👍. I'd love it if you'd open for people in the community to offer their own voices for characters and maybe add some sound effects, I could see this evolving into a fully fleged audio drama series 😄

    • @TheMythKeeper
      @TheMythKeeper  Месяц назад +1

      I also would love to get other people to do voice - and certainly anyone is welcome to grab these videos and 'enhance' them with sound effects or alternate audio. One of my challenges is my production schedule. Anyone I add in to my process becomes a dependancy that complicates my weekly release cadence, but if I figure out a way to do this I'm all for it.

    This was pretty neat. It's like a little narrative podcast with visuals. It's nice to experiment, and I think this could be a mainstay. I don't know the metrics, but if it's performing lower than other stuff, I'd say keep with it for at least a couple more entries, since RUclips's inscrutable algorithm takes a bit of time to adjust to posting stuff that's a bit different. And of course, as long as you enjoy making it, and have the time, I think it's a nice change of pace from other videos.
    I think like another comment said, definitely try not to rush through the script too much, but I think everything else is fine. I do wonder how your players feel about your impressions of their characters though.
    Also, I know it might not be in the cards, due to one reason or another, but an actual play series would be something, I'd definitely be interested in watching, because for the most part there are very few high quality Pathfinder actual play series, and I have looked many times. There are some, but none really grabbed me.
    Some suggestions for if you do do one eventually though would be to make sure you AND your players' audio is good, because that's killed my interest trying to watch a lot of the smaller ones I've tried to check out. And again the RUclips algorithm is really weird, so it might mess up the channel numbers to stream or upload it on the main channel, so it might be best to create a separate channel for it. And if you do it live, I'd suggest using Twitch, probably on like the DND or the generic Tabletop category since sadly the Pathfinder one isn't really used or just directly to the secondary RUclips channel.
    But yeah, cool video, looking forward to more. 👍

      Thank you so much! So far my players have been really jazzed I'm doing this. Occasionally I've been called out for missing a cool thing their character did (they've seen a few more episodes than everyone else) but so far they're really supportive.
