- This is a massive drive that I have always wanted to do - the Hume Highway/Freeway/Motorway* between Melbourne and Sydney.
*Yes, confusingly this one road carries all three designations at certain points. Victoria seems to think it's section is entirely a 'Freeway' despite all of the at-grade intersections. New South Wales gives it a broader 'Highway' status right up until it becomes a fully controlled-access 'Motorway' around 130km from Sydney.
Either way, it's odd in both states that the hard shoulder is a designated bicycle lane, which in my mind makes neither jurisdiction's section a full Freeway or Motorway.
But anyway, this epic drive was completed in one day. We started in Geelong at 6:30am, drove through the outskirts of Melbourne, headed straight up the Hume, took a detour to see Canberra for the first time via Barton and Federal Highways, then back onto the Hume for the final leg to Sydney, where we arrived at around 8:30pm.

Very nice drive! Honestly the Hume is one of my favourite roads to drive on in Australia. I saw you took the new WestConnex tunnels as well 😁
It was a pleasant drive. And I love how well people keep left over there!
That Westconnex tunnel never seems to end. What an epic feat of engineering!
Sydney at night is amazing to see as you approach it. Great vid Sam!
Thank you. It sure is! Especially once you come out of the new M8 tunnel, and the city is right there in front of you.
Haha 7:17 you pass a white Everest and three seconds later a new white Everest spawns 😂
I didn't even realise this until now 🤣
That traffic looks insane in Melbourne and Sydney..im glad Perth traffic isn't that crazy . I'd need medication to live there 😅
Yeah, Perth is busy, but on the whole moves pretty well. We'll see how it is in 10 years from now.
This wasn't even the worst of it. Leaving Melbourne we left the freeway for a bit to avoid the stop-start traffic, and entering Sydney it was way past rush hour.
@@roadtripsam Yeah, the construction on that part of the Western Freeway makes it congested all the time.
Canberra has some resemblance to Washington DC.
With both being planned national capitals, I can see that.
