Prudence Farrow,Mia Farrow’s sister. Both of them joined the Beatles and their wives/girlfriends in 1967 along with a few others to India to visit the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.John ‘s song was about Prudence being reclusive and trapped inside herself and the others coaxing her out of her shell
I heard it was George Harrison who finally got her back, I wonder how many people doing reactions to several Beatles songs know the stories behind their songs, especially from about 1966 onward, of which there are many.
In their younger days John wasn't always comfortable with how his recorded voice sounded so George Martin suggested they "double" it, which they often continued doing the rest of their career. On a side note, Kurt Cobain had the same issue recording "Nevermind" and producer Butch Vig suggested the same thing and goaded Kurt into it saying "John Lennon did it", knowing Kurt was a huge fan of John's.
You got it. The song is tryring to cheer someone up. I was 7 when the Beatles exploded onto the American music scene. I'm now 66 and Dear Prudence in my opinion is the most beautiful song written by the Beatles. I still can't get enough of hearing this song.
Prudence took Transcendental Meditation to heart, so she was meditating all day and night while the others were out singing and socializing. So John Lennon wrote this song about her.
This is one of their very most beautiful songs I wouldn’t spend too much time trying to figure out exactly what it means. Could just be a friend of any age wanting to cheer up a sad friend - “Spend this beautiful day with me, Prudence.” 🥰
I love this song. My sister’s name is Prudence. The song is a plea to their friend who was isolating from her group of friends. I love John Lennon’s voice in this (and every other song ❤️). There’s just so much going on with their music. Little embellishments that sound so perfect. The best of the best made everyday life into works of auditory art. The Beatles continue to shape my life. 🌺✌️
The Beatles and an entourage went to India to study Transcendental Meditation and other teaching of the Mahrishi. Mia Farrow and her sister Prudence were in the group. Prudence became overwhelmed and reclusive on the trip and isolated herself. This song was about that.
This song is from the Beatles famous double White Album from 1968. I had this record. All the songs on it are great such as "Back In The U.S.S.R.", "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Blackbird", "Revolution 9" etc.
"Dear Prudence" was decades ahead sonically. Bands were still learning from it in the eighties, even the nineties, probably still to this day. The guitar tone, the bass line, the lead guitar tone, the deceptively simple drum line. The arrangement and the lyrics. Side one track two. "Sexy Sadie" is a nice follow up song from that same album. Side three track five. One might say it's the diss track complement to "Dear Prudence".
@ Mike Caetano Modal with high and low dropped Ds is living room way to play it on guitar . This tuning also can used for “ Here Comes The Sun King “ from the Abbey Roads album . For acoustic need those bright treble y guitars like Taylor or Takamine
If we all had a friend, that could, or would . Just take a damn moment to say , dear___..the sun is up, the shy is blue, it's beautiful, won't you come out to play. Musically excellent. Spiritually ..TIMELESS.
Jayy you are just so intuitive… it’s amazing. I was very young when this came out and don’t remember the particulars but, Ms Farrow didn’t leave her apartment for a period of time. I do remember a whole group of people were very concerned and really considerate. Thank you for sharing.
I love all of you reactions to ALL genres! You are always spot on!!! As they say " and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make" ❤❤ make"❤
Prudence is Mia Farrow's sister. On their famous trip to India she became very depressed so they wrote this for her to cheer up & leave her room. Turned out be be one of their most poignant & beautiful songs.
YOU ARE AWESOME. I am loving your love of the Beatles. I grew up when the Beatles were THE band. I had all their albums and knew the words to all the songs. I’m 71 yr old and still enjoy listening to them - now with you. I could not pick a single favorite album but Rubber Soul, the White Album, and Abbey Road are all golden.
I just read what Prudence Farrow said about her time in India with the Beatles. She said she was serious about trying the get the most out of meditation and to see what she could get out of it. She said she stayed in her room for 5 days without coming out and The Beatles wanted her to come out.
This song made my heart happy when I was 15. And it still does, only with that tinge of sadness that goes hand in hand with nostalgia. Actually, that whole double album had & has that effect. If you grew up with The Beatles, they're with you forever.💙☮💙
The Beatles were in India with a bunch of friends, heavy into transcendental meditation but even John was like "hey Prudence, c'mon and give yourself a break from it awhile".
The acoustic version from the "Esher Demos" from "The White Album" 2018 Remix Deluxe Version is fantastic and haunting. Is just John Lennon and an acoustic guitar. Magnificent!!
Prudence was trying to achieve enlightenment ahead of everyone else at the meditation compound. John Lennon wanted her to experience life outside her head for a bit, she was missing the beauty of nature and life. This is my #1 favorite song, not just because of the heartfelt message (The Sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so are you) but because of the incredible production. Listen to it again but ignore the lyrics, hear how each instrument is introduced, how the song floats in at the beginning and floats away at the end, how it ebbs an flows, builds to a climax with the electric guitar and piano, the excellent drum fill. An incredible job of production.
Bought this album shortly after it came out and played it pretty much constantly for years. After the vinyl wore out I got it on cassettes, and later on when those gave out, CD's.
This is my favorite Beatles song. I play this almost everytime I pick up my guitar. One of the first songs I learned to play. One of the songs John wrote in India about Mia Farrows sister who meditated for days on end in her room (mainly to stay away from the perverted Maharishi)
The demo version Lennon played alone at George Harrison’s house when they got together to preview their songs to each other prior to recording The White Album was almost as good as the released version. Just John playing it alone was so damn good.
Your eyes are usually closed when you're mditating, maybe all day, every day, like Prudence did, locked in her room for endless days, when she was in Rishi Kesh, studying transandental meditation with The Beatles, in 1968 :D
Sir Paul McCartney on drums and bass duties. Ringo had walked out of the band by this time but thankfully returned to a large bouquet reception welcoming him back!
If you ever get the time, listen to the album in order....it's beautiful and also shows how the boys were expanding their talents and growing apart at the same time...it's a perfect capsulation of a group in transition.
The Beatles wrote songs about people... "Dear Prudence"... 'Michelle'... 'Hey Jude' (which was John Lennon's son Julian)... 'Lucy in the sky w/ diamonds'... "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely hearts club band' ... 'Hey Bulldog'... 'Eleanor Rigby'... etc. The Beatles spoke to everyone... they could have been talking to anyone.
This is part of the phycodellic music with a sweet lyrics and beautiful argegios. Experimental music from the Beatles as they were growing up. Ringo as this time gone wild with the drums and i'm glad it happened cause you can hear a more mature and free Ringo. (The perfect tempo man). It's a great song. I use to play it on my acustic guitar.
Yes, Paul played drums on this because Ringo had felt unappreciated and had temporarily left. What’s really fascinating is the who played bass question. There’s been ongoing discussion that it was Paul, or John, or Klaus Voorman. Paul has said that it wasn’t him, it was John. John also played bass on Helter Skelter. Paul also said it was definitely himself. An engineer at the session swears it was Klaus Voorman. I can’t understand the confusion over the bass credit. But whoever it was did a great job.
Exxactly! Trying to cheer up Mia Farrow's sister Prudence, at the Indian spiritual retreat where they all studied TM. She was a devoted student, eventually became a teacher of TM. John Lennon thought she should get outside and enjoy fresh air.
John Lennon wrote this song for Prudence Farrow sister of Mia Farrow the actress. Mia and Prudence were at the retreat that the Beatles were at in India. Prudence was spooked by all the papparazi hanging around and was spending a lot of time in her room. So John wrote this song to try to coax her out of her room. Mia Farrow talks about it on a talk show video I saw. You can look it up on youtube.
Great choice JAYY I enjoyed hearing it again. It would be great if you go right back to the explosive spontaneous joy that made the Beatles really special in the early 1960s. She Loves you - Please Please Me - I want to hold your hand etc
This song is about Prudence Farrow, Mia Farrow's Sister. Prudence had become obsessed with meditating to the point of doing anything else. This was in early 1968 during a trip to India. A little trivia Paul McCartney played the drums on this song and "Back in the U.S.S.R." The reason for this was Ringo Star had walked out on the rest of the Guys.
Cheer somebody up - you got it! Apparently Mia farrow's sister Prudence was in India with the group and entourage. Prudence was staying in her room meditating, or another rumor is that she was hiding from someone.
You know, I was in it from their start and but never remember even questioning what any of The Beatles songs were about. I just floated downstream on it all. Of course, by the time they broke up I was just 18 so I wasn't questioning much anyway. Turns out I should have.
Your right about the message, but the confinement is her own mind. She's being weighed down by the Standards Society has set for her. John's telling her to expand her mind and do what makes her happy instead of what Society expects of her. "The Mightiest Chains holding us down are what others expect of us."
@@davidpaul7563 It's a Paraphrase from Several People. The One that comes to mind first is from the Eagles "Lying Eyes". "We live our lives in chains, only to find we've had the Key".
Once again very perceptive. Prudence Farrow was in India with the Beatles and was refusing to come outside and wanted to stay inside and meditate. This is John's song trying to get her to come outside.
Many great covers of this song. The hard rock band Tarbox just did a cool cover of Dear Prudence this year which is super good 👌 and then in the 70s The stairsteps made a cover which I think is the best version
In this slightly remixed version , you can really hear Paul's fat bass tone . The album is famous for an incredible mix of styles , including some they invented .
The two times you paused are the two exact moments you shouldn't have. You cut right through the backing harmony vocals, which are the best feature of the song. Philistine.
Another great song from The White Album, mind you, its full of great songs! Ringo was a great drummer. Siouxsie and the Banshees did a wonderful cover version of Dear Prudence

No hesitation. I thought here’s a woman who married Frank Sinatra and Woody Allen was she going after John Lennon too.?

Don't forget Donovan who also was there and learned John that guitar picking witch he use in this song 😊

Agreed. It is F-ing ridiculous
John Lennon's singing voice is one of a kind.

Decorating for my Senior Hop in 1969 we played this album over and over, but this song just penetrated into my heart. I love it!
This is my second favorite Beatles song. I’m So Tired is #1. This entire album is genius, which is the norm for them.

Macca on both!
And Lennon's finger picking makes the song.
Paul on drums, actually, maybe also Ringo, later in the song, hardcore fans do not agree.
