Great video as always. My favorite little detail that you throw in is when you point to the i in the top right corner and it pops out, haha
I've wondered if that is too cheesy, but for now I'm going to keep doing it :P
Awesome video as always Jon, very entertaining to watch. I must say during that I was a bit worried for you given you seemed to focus near exclusively on Art and Science tiles along with building fairly few actual buildings but wow did you chain those civilization cards and nodes well which really added up. It's clear to me that there is certainly more than one way to win in this game and I always like that, it's fun to try different strategies.
I think the first thing you have to do during setup is hire a personal accountant to track your score and bonuses. :) I do love these kinds of games, but it looks like one where you'll miss a few things almost every time you play.
Amazing gameplay. convinced me to get this game !
Looks this one was a lot of work! Good job. I think this one isn't for me, I love complex games but complexity must be in service of either theme or fun, and in this case - at least by my standards - it is neither.
Still, of all the youtube channels out there that showcase complex board games like this, you have by far the best presentation, clarity, and editing. I love your channel and started supporting you on patreon recently. Looking forward to your next few videos.
This is considered complex? Looks pretty simple and straight forward to me. Put down a tile, collect resources depending how tile is placed, optional build or upgrade city, optional acquire or upgrade technology then next player do the same. I certainly have quite a few far more complicated game than this in my collection.
@@chiehlilee9224 Hmm fair, but perhaps I mean something more like length or, uh, 'bigness'? You know, number of interactions and moving parts, rather than number of rules. I have games that are a lot more complex than this in terms of mechanics but:
1) It is a lot easier to remember how the different mechanics work because they are more tightly integrated with each other and the theme.
2) Their length is justified by the level of engagement, this one just feels too long.
What is the kind of thing I'm talking about? When you place down either a tile or a tech, you should be considering what that means for future tile or tech placements. Since your opponents tiles are public information, and so are all your future technologies, you should be able to gauge all that, keeping in mind that this will lead to this or this will rule out that. But that's a _lot_ of information the game is asking me to parse and calculate, and for what? The payoff seems too low and not very thematic.
Complexity may have been the wrong word, but this is a big game that asks a lot of time investment and has a high optimization potential, but not in a way that is engaging to me. I would get bored less than a third of a the way through this game, and the fact that the game gives me the tools to look forward and see what my tile/tech placements cut off paradoxically would be more of a burden than anything, since calculating that is not fun and the payoff poor in terms of engagement and reward.
I'm glad you found the video informative enough to make a decision like that. Thanks again for the patreon support!
I like to think that there is a difference between how complicated a game is and how complex it is. To me this is not a complicated game for the reasons @Cheihli wrote, in general the rules are quite straight forward and have very few exceptions. That being said, I think it's complex due to the ramifications of those straight forward rules and the amount of things you have to consider. The game has 72 different mastery cards you can play, and 48 of them don't even have prerequisites! Each effect is straight forward on those cards, but the number of them adds to the complexity in a big way. Perhaps this is just silly semantics, but I figured I'd chime in :)
At 17:48, Grey Player tile. Some tiles it seems you get the tech for the corners, like early on, matching 2 at a time. Later on, when all 3 corners are touching other tiles, you only count the locus point.
Ah, yes when you make a ring you only score those in the ring, not the outer ones. I explain this in greater detail here if you are curious: ruclips.net/video/VlT4CPVVRvA/видео.html
Finally got a copy of this game. Happy I did. Just tested it out a little myself today by myself. Will try to get a real game or three in. Great video.
How did this game sit with you? Have you tried any of the expansions? Even though I haven’t got a real game in yet, I do feel the game loses its replayability in the complexity department the more it’s played. I do see this as a solid warm up game into something heavier within the genre.
I never actually played this game with anyone else, so my only experience with it was the creation of this video which is obviously not really an authentic gaming experience. This means I can't really give any opinions since I don't have the experience to really form them.
At 58:30 it looks like grey did a redo of their grow phase. They initially placed by the bottom level 2 city and then they did another grow with a different tile and then later upgraded that city. I think this was just missed in the editing.
Yep, looks like that's exactly what happens. I think I need to come up with a better way to signal to my future editing self that I am redoing a turn because this does sneak in more often then I'd like. I need to yell really loud into the mic or something like that :P Thanks for pointing this out, I've added a note about this to the Klingon subtitles.
At 1:18:18 the white player should have 3 more points from cartography because they also have a red domain with their military doctrine.
Good catch, I've added a correction to the Klingon subtitles.
8:20 if you pick purple as your desired colour, wouldn't you get the concentration bonus?
Unfortunately, it's been too long since I played this game to remember the rules enough to answer your question. Sorry about that!
At 2:00:22 you should get 2 more government knowledge for the very first tech you got. It might have been the only time it activated?
Good catch. I think you may be right about this being the only activation, we ended up switching strategies towards monuments and those for the most part didn't need much government in this particular setup. I've added a correction about this to the Klingon subtitles, thanks for mentioning it.
WOW that was quite a long playthrough. Not sure how BGG lists this as a 60-120 min game. I don't see how any group could get through 3 ages in 60 min.
Great job powering through all of that it was quite a lot to track in the back end of that game.
It was longer than I expected, but I think part of that has to do with my showing every little thing on camera which takes quite a bit of time. I haven't played with others but I would imagine much of the game can be somewhat overlapped. Once a player finishes the build phase I think they could do all development while the next player is going for instance.
60 minutes is for a 2 player game with experienced player (not generally experienced, but experienced with this game). There is multiple playthrough from the team behind the game available on youtube, and you can see that while explaining why they do things, they do reach 60 minutes at 2 players. I think most players will take longer though, and a 3 players game can still easily be played in 2hrs, which is still long, but ok with so many decisions packed in the game.
Question: At 18:44 You add the great wall and do not distribute knowledge to the white city (1 yellow 1 purple 1 orange 1 green) is this a mistake or is it how the game is played ? Thanks !
Actually found it on the rulebook: ''You do not gain knowledge by placing a monument tile" :)
@JonGetsGames hey, I just wanted to ask how you liked the way the game works the development cards with connecting the nodes. I don’t have this game but am interested in getting it, but watching the playthrough gives me the hesitance towards that mechanic. I like the idea behind it, but it doesn’t really seem at all restrictive, or in the very least tactful. It seems like you will always find a connection, if not beside two other cards, then you can easily just make the chain “longer” instead of “thicker.” (I hope that makes sense). It would be cool if some developments gained more power as more nodes were connected to it, such as maybe Law giving an extra knowledge for each node connected to it. Let me know what your thoughts on this mechanic are and if it is as restrictive as it should be or if maybe connecting the nodes seems more of an obligation and more moot than an enticing and tactful mechanic.
I personally think the nodes are somewhat restrictive already and wouldn't need anymore mechanics associated with them. We did have a turn in this game where we couldn't play the mastery card we wanted to due to having no available matching nodes. Since there is such a variety of mastery cards this means you just have to make a different one and I am ok with that. There are enough mastery cards that give incentives for matching specific colors that I think it feels more interesting than an obligation overall.
At 2:09:59 you don't have 3 red nodes, only 2, so you were unable to complete the first objective.
Wow, you are right. I tripled checked this for each player and somehow missed this. It seems like we could have easily made the 3rd red node on our last turn and would have just had 1 less green node and therefore 1 less point. Thanks for pointing this out, I've added a note to the subtitles.
@@GettingGames I'd just like to point out that I'm really impressed by this playthrough. This game has some options and some many triggers, I can only imagine the difficulty of planning and editing this video. Thank you very much for the hard work!
At 1:39:29 you take 15 instead of 16 points.
Oops, I failed some basic math there. Thanks for pointing that out, I've added a correction to the subtitles.
How’d you get a copy of this game? Publisher says they don’t ship to North America 🇺🇸.
It was sent to me by the publisher so that I could make this sponsored video.
At 1:31:10 you miss 1 science knowledge gained.
Nicely caught, thanks. I've added a correction to the Klingon subtitles now.
1:32:09 did you miss the 6 points for upgrading mythology?
Dang, it looks like I did. I've added a note to the subtitles, thanks for pointing that out.
