Leather Crafting Tutorial - LotR Nazgul Gauntlets

  • This patter is highly inspired by the Nazguls form Lord of the Rings. The gauntlets are designed to be very flexible and easy to move and act in it; you will have no trouble in wield a weapon in it. This build is fitting for everybody having some experience with leather will do just fine on this build, all beginners may have some trouble.
    Difficulty: medium Tools needed: basic
    Recommended materials
    - 2,5 mm (6 oz) veg. tanned leather
    - about 120 rivets
    - 2,5 cm (1 inch) wide flexible and strong straps of leather or other material
    - 2 cm (4/5 inch) wide rubber cloth band
    - Thicker string or round rubber band to tighten the bracers
    Tools: edge trimmer, cutting knife, burnisher, hole punch, leather carving tools, bone folder, clamps, sewing material, diamond shaped chisel, glue
    Size:
    At 100% scale it fits a hand with the length of 20 cm (8 inch), measured from the tip of the middle finger to the end of you hand and the beginning of the wrist. Use this as first test for a first paper model. Change the printout in scale if needed.

    Cool, but how do you ensure that those grooves don't lose their shape if you use leather moisturizer to prevent the leather from drying out? There is literally nothing reinforcing the shape.

      Thank you. I am not sure I understand your question correct. Generally the leather is dry, if you put a lot of later on them an move them around a lot chances are they will lose there shape. By 'leather moisturizer' I guess you mean something like oil; if you not soak the leather completly in it if will still be dry leather.
      Maybe the point that you missed is that it is vegetable tanned leather, which is different to the more common crome tanned leather; veg tanned leather is much more stiff, you can moisten it shape it and when it is dry it will keep the shape.
      Also the resist closes the openings in the leather, makes it more resistant again water, oil, etc and hardens it too. You could even moisten it and put it in the oven at 60°C and make it very hard this way.
      I hope this somehow answers your question
