So looking forward to working on the artwork for Way of Edan with you, Philip! Oh man, you're finally at Water 7 Saga. This is it. This is one of the peak moments of One Piece. Enjoy! There's nothing like reading it for the first time!
Omg,so well said Petrik!!! 😭
I feel so fortunate that you are handling the art direction, Petrik -- especially given what an excellent job you've done in that role for other series, including Malazan! I am ready for Water 7!
Wait wait wait. I've been subscribed to both your channels for awhile but @petrikleo you are an artist for broken binding? How did I miss this????
@@Jistarii Petrik does art direction for The Broken Binding, which means he tells the artists what to illustrate. A fabulous example is the upcoming Broken Binding edition of The Malazan Book of the Fallen.
I’m glad I’m in the one piece fandom because it introduced me to this channel and similar literature channels. As a brain-rotted gen Z it feels good to read things outside of comment sections
Well said! As much as the interactions here on BookTube can be enriching, the ideal thing is for this to encourage more reading. All the best!
Check out Red Rising. You'll love it.
To be honest I only watch your content for the One Piece analysis, it is really fun to hear an intelligent perspective on my favorite series in the world. I am greatly looking forward to your Water 7 videos!!!
I'm the same, I am here first and foremost as a One Piece fan. My fondness for literature has faded away just like the downward trend of readers suggests. Manga is the only thing I can stomach reading now aday.
I am very glad to have you along! There's something special about the fan engagement when it comes to One Piece. I have certainly felt a ton of welcome support. Cheers!
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy
The borader One Piece community is by and large very welcoming, especially to people new to the series. The rabble rousers are typically the ones debating on upcoming events in the manga, trying to be the one to systematically predict the plot as if it makes them a prophet when by shere coincidence they happen to be correct. Oda actively keeps up with this community as closely as he can in order to do something other than what the common theories are proposing.
The other community I tend to steer clear of are the power scaling community. They are interested, more so, in ranking the battle prowess of each individual character than the actual narrative on the outlook. This form of engagement stems from their fascination with martial arts focused manga and anime, so I don't hold them to fault for it.
I have always taken a literary approach to One Piece, and it has proven to be the most effective means of predicting the events that are yet to unfold in the plot, as well as the providing the most fulfillment. One Piece is a story first and foremost, and I am remiss to see the length people go to divide themselves over something that ought to be bringing them closer together.
Please be careful. If you search for One Piece or you click on a recommended One Piece Video (or even worse a Shorts-Video), the algorithm will bombard you with spoilers.
Thank you for the heads up!
I am sooooo excited for you to enjoy Water 7 !!!! I love being able to relive enjoying this story for the first time. I’ve watched it twice. And have been considering restarting the manga when I have time since I haven’t read the entire thing just new chapters as they come out.
I'm well into Water 7 now, and the stakes are as high as my investment! I can't wait to discuss this one!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Awwwesome!!!!!!!!!
I loved chatting about The Juging Eye with you, and I’m so excited that we’ll be soon passing the mid-point in The Wars of Light and Shadow! Glad you're having a blast with everything you're reading. Have a wonderful weekend, my friend! 😊
Thank you, Johanna! I will never get tired of how enriching it is to sit down with a friend and discuss a book. I deeply appreciate how you have made so many of my reading experiences so much better!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy you’ve done the same for me! ❤️
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it's good to see some high praise for my favorite author, R. Scott Bakker! You're also really selling me on Janny Wurts's Wars of Light and Shadow!
I’d love to see your thoughts on Wars of Light and Shadow, Michael! Bakker is just brilliant!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy But will we see a final trilogy? I hope upon hope we will and I would absolutely love to share my ideas with what may have transpired during the desperate climax of his last book. I don't want to spoil anything, but there was so much there at the end. Hopefully he hates loose ends as much as the rest of us.
Water 7! Woo-hoo!
I'm more excited than I can say for this!
so excited to see your journey with the water 7 saga! From how you handle other arcs I think you'll enjoy it
Thank you! I just finished Long Ring Long Land, and now it’s on to the Water 7 arc!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I am very curious to hear your thoughts on Long Ring Long Land, it is a very controversial arc in the One Piece Community
Wow! I am excited for you to hear The Edan Trilogy will receive the Broken Binding treatment. I'll now have the paperbacks for reading and the BB edition for shelf display. I have also been enjoying your "HT Analyse Stories" series with AP. Keep it going! -Cheers
Thank you so much, Christopher! See you in a little bit for our Bound and the Broken chat!
Great recap! I keep getting serious FOMO every time you post an R. Scott Bakker reading update! Really have to continue reading his work, and your feedback gets me even more hyped to do so! Particularly excited for you, Philip about the Way of Edan audiobook! And very much looking forward to all your ongoing discusions including on Wars of Light and Shadow!
Thank you so much, P.L.! I have so many great books ahead of me this year, including The Last of the Atalanteans!
I'm glad you're liking Aspect Emperor. It blew Prince of Nothing out of the water for me.
So far, I might actually like it a little more than Prince of Nothing. Let’s see what happens! Cheers, Oso!
I really enjoyed your conversation with Johanna on the Judging Eye. I read the Fall a while ago and enjoyed but never continued on with the series, because I'm unsure about getting involved in a self-pub that bulky. It gives me concern about a lack of editorial restraints. I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on the series. I definitely want to check out your conversations with AP on analyizing literature as that should be interesting.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Thank you, Andrew! If you enjoy John Gwynne’s The Faithful and the Fallen, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy The Bound and the Broken. That’s my take so far. Cahill definitely shows his love for traditional fantasy, but the story is fast-paced. I’m glad you enjoyed the chat with Johanna!
Can’t wait for all our talks coming up!
Seriously John, get on that R Scott Bakker train
@@thatsci-firogue I have em. That is 1 step closer at least right?
I'll be seeing you soon, buddy!
I am very excited to hear your thoughts on water 7 and the arc that directly follows it, I personally think that those arcs are where one piece is at its best.
I’m reading Water 7 now! Definitely pulling on the heartstrings already . . . Cheers!
Philip! I’m enjoying your channel, attitude, and love for storytelling. I remember you commenting (during your review of the G8 arc) that you prefer reading over watching. Because of this comment, I am wondering how you feel about manga as a medium in contrast with books. Obviously manga is something that one reads, but it is also a very visual medium. I’d love for you to comment on your thoughts and opinions on that in a future video.
What an excellent question! There is undoubtedly a visual component to reading the manga, but it feels more like reading than watching to me in that I am totally immersed in the story. I like movies and such, but I feel more immersed when reading, like my whole brain is engaged in imagining the story. Reading the manga feels similar, but I'd like to think about why. Cheers!
I don't know why but hearing a classy, articulate author say, "brain fart" just made my day. 😂
Ha ha! I’m happy to have given you an occasion for a smile!
2:56 For the start of the One Piece update!
Cheers!
So excited for you and Allen on the Audiobook (can’t wait for “Austrian Sequara”: “Dahy-rayfen! Kom vit mi if yoo vanna liv!” 😂 I jest, I jest! 😄) and the Broken Binding edition! 😃
Will definitely be listening to you and Doc AP’s discussion while reading “Memory, Sorrow & Thorn” by Tad Williams this Summer, same with your talks with Johanna on “The Ascent-Emperor” Trilogy while reading the earlier “Prince of Nothing” Trilogy! Cheers, Professor! 😊
Many thanks, MacScarfield! I hope you'll enjoy all the voices in Allen's narration, including Austrian Sequara!
Wow! Such a busy summer ahead. Lots to get excited about. I finally cleared the decks of a hectic May, and I'm ready to dig into my SPFBOX list. You keep nudging me closer to finally getting to Janny Wurts' books, too. Looking forward to all that lies ahead! Have a lovely weekend.
I think you will find so much to love in Janny Wurts' writing, Vaughn. I hope you'll find some gems in those SPFBOX reads!
Have you read any Raymond E. Feist? His novels carried me through high school when I wasn't reading Stephen King and really captivated me with his fun, simple, D&D-esque stories. I had the great pleasure of meeting him many years ago at the San Diego comic convention and he teased me for wanting to pursue in his footsteps as a novelist but was flattered and humbled by my praise. Such a pleasant and humorous man. I highly recommend his _Riftwar Saga_ . As it is, I really want to collect the work he's done with Janny Wurts and then sidestep into her solo work later on. Professor Chase has certainly gotten me interested in reading her work.
@@jasonuerkvitz3756 I don’t know about Vaughn, but I have read only Magician by Feist. I enjoyed it, but for some reason never followed up with rest of Riftwar. This was some thirty-something years ago, so I can’t remember why I didn’t continue.
@@jasonuerkvitz3756 I have not read Feist, but I'm like Philip in that I've long intended to. Seems like your note is a good prompt to remedy that situation. Thanks!
@@vaughnroycroft999 They're fun. All the best!
I will of course buy special edition Way of Edan and any other kickstarter you run.
I deeply appreciate your support, Eric! Thank you! 🙏
Your channel got me back into reading after I stopped making time for it. I am currently reading To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars by Christopher Paolini and having a great time. I have lots of books to catch up on :)
That makes me so happy to hear! Thank you for making my day with this comment. I wish you much fulfillment in your reading!
The Quilluminati is a nice name for a book club 🙂
Thank you! I think it was Brian’s idea for the name as well as the reading club.
Thanks for the updates! I started Stonewielder a few weeks ago…still at the beginning, but loving it. The setting is so great. I can’t wait to watch your videos with AP about it
Stonewielder remains one of my favorite Esslemont books! So much atmosphere, and some marvelous character work, plus some haunting moments. My best to you for the read!
Great update Philip! I’m really excited to hear about your Special Editions in the future.
Thanks so much, Chas! I’m very excited to see how the special edition develops!
I wish you'd be narrating your own book. I enjoy your voice a lot.
Thank you, Michael -- you are very kind!
I have so enjoyed the first few episodes of the analyzing literature videos you are doing with A.P., and as you suspected, I actually knew a lot more already than I was anticipating! Still super insightful though, and you two are always just a delight to watch ;)
Glad to hear that you are enjoying your first foray in to Cahill's works, can't wait for you to see the epicness increase over the course of the series! Happy reading 🥰
Cheers, Esmay! I had a feeling you'd be familiar with a lot of what we're discussing, but I'm glad the videos are enjoyable anyway. The Bound and the Broken is going to be fun!
I love the Cahill series so far, snd so looking forward to the next book!
I'm slowly nibbling away at The Way of Edan.
I have a question about Urd... was she inspired by anyone in particular? I only ask because she totally gives me a lovely mix of Granny Weatherwax & Mim from disney vibes.
📖🥰📚
I love the idea of connecting Urd to Granny Weatherwax! I have read Equal Rites, but it was long after I wrote the entirety of The Edan Trilogy, so I can’t claim direct inspiration from Pratchett. Though I probably watched The Sword in the Stone as a child, I had to look up Mim to jog my memory, so if there’s any influence there, it’s deep in my subconscious. Urd is, of course, a name I pilfered from Norse mythology, being one of the Norns (Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld). She definitely has roots in the archetype of a witch - not the child-devouring sort but rather the wise woman you’d like to have on your side. Cheers!
Wow! You must have an incredible scheduling department to keep up with all your discussions. Awesome update and looking forward to all of it.
I would say that my manager is a genius, but I am my manager . . . Cheers, Jarrod!

Count me in for a Broken Binding copy of the Edan trilogy! I'm excited to dig in to my SPFBO picks really soon too.
I'm also very jealous of you getting to read The Bound & The Broken for the first time, wish I could erase it from my brain and experience it again for the first time.
Thanks, Sam! I think The Broken Binding is going to do a spectacular job. The Bound and the Broken definitely started with a bang for me!
Always a joy to hear what’s up and gain perhaps a few insights. Just (hopefully) wrapping up my first book today, and at 59 it gives me hope I can get out the three or four other books still percolating in my grey matter!
That's marvelous! Congratulations on wrapping up your book! That is a moment to cherish, and I wish you much fulfillment in what's to come for your writing.
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I thank you, Sir! The funny thing is that I have been writing pretty much my whole life, but it was only relatively recently that the idea of a ‘whole book’ became achievable, if that makes sense. Still, it has always been enjoyable to do and to finally be at a place where I feel I am ready to unleash it upon others…yes, a Moment!!
Wow, Janny worked on Wars of Light and Shadow since the 70’s! That takes a lot of patience. Glad it’s finally complete! I wanna read it so bad. I’m looking forward to what you think of Water 7 as well!
Thank you, Marco! Yes, 50+ years makes my jaw drop!
I'll definitely be watching the analyzing story video! I'm very excited 🎉

i know u have a channel on various different topics but i can’t WAIT for your analysis on what happens with some of the characters in water 7

I've loved reading the The Bound and Broken and I think Cahill gets better with each release, just finished reading Of War and Ruin, and it was fantastic. Really looking forward to the book club!
I’m excited to progress in The Bound and The Broken! Cheers!
I usually struggle to read without audiobooks, I do both at the same time. So I’m excited to read the Edan trilogy once the audio is out!
Thank you! I hope the audiobooks will bring the story to life for people!
What a perfect description of R Scott Bakker's books. Not enjoyable, but endlessly compelling
And very hard to put down!
I highly recommend that you check out one piece moments you loved in the manga that you think would be powerful animated. Watching the entire series would be nice but I’m sure you value your time and if you already read it there’s no issue in jumping into the scenes you want to see.
I’ll have more to say when you’re going into the arc after water 7 related to the anime specifically the dub in how incredible the voice acting is for one character in their speech, but I’ll save it for another day. The reason I mention it is because it is notoriously one of the greatest moments in all of one piece anime for how much they elevate the entire interaction especially when dealing with unsaid character at their core
Sounds like an epic moment! Thank you for your advice - I’ll follow it!
I originally started watching your videos when you began reviewing One Piece, my favourite series. The Water 7 Saga cements Robin as my favourite crew member. It’s incredibly powerful; if you’re interested, there are also moments I recommend checking out in the anime (I won’t give any spoilers as spoilers as to which, since you haven’t read it yet) that are just beautifully scored, really amping up the emotional heft of Robin’s storyline.
Her motivations for acting the way she does in the coming arc are complicated and a big mystery that gets unravelled over the course of Water 7 and Enies Lobby (the arc after Water 7).
Two of the best arcs in the series also boasting some of the best characterisation.
I’m definitely on board for developing Robin’s character as she’s already my favorite. Cheers!
I’m so looking forward to the audio book and special edition Edan. I’m glad you are enjoying The Bound and The Broken. It’s a favorite of mine.
Thank you so much, Matt! I really am having fun with The Bound and the Broken. It's a great reminder of many of things I've always loved about fantasy. I hope your SPFBO reading goes well!

The Vanished Birds is amazing. One of the most impactful reading experiences I have ever had. Truly a beautiful work of art. I'm confident you and John will adore it, less sure about Mike because of the book's unconventional structure which might throw him off. I don't know Brian well enough yet to make a prediction for him, but I don't think any of you will hate it. Hello Dr. C. I've recently added To Ride Hells' Chasm by Janny Wurts to my TBR. I just read sixty some pages of The Vanished Birds, but it failed to sustain my interest. I may return to it at a later date. Now reading The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson, a favorite non-fiction author of mine.

I am looking forward to them very much!
Will check out the Bound and the Broken series, thanks for the tip! Would you advise starting with The Fall like you did or jumping straight into Of Blood and Fire? I'm seeing differing opinions online.
I would definitely advise starting with The Fall. You’d be fine either way, though. I hope you’ll enjoy The Bound and the Broken!
I'm looking to dive into a new epic fantasy series and am torn between "The Licanius Trilogy" by James Islington and "The Faithful and the Fallen" series by John Gwynne. I enjoy rich world-building, complex characters, and intricate plots. Which series do you think I should buy, and why?
Im also thinking about getting "The Bloodsworn Trilogy" so out of them 3 what would you recommend?
I haven’t read Licanius, so I can’t comment on that. I love Gwynne’s books, but their strengths are slightly different from what you’re looking for. To me, Gwynne is wonderful at writing action and creating emotional attachment to his characters. Bloodsworn is more reminiscent of Icelandic sagas, which I love, than any other modern fantasy I know. His other two series, both set in the Banished Lands, are more Celtic in inspiration. His stories have a lot of heart. If you give them a try, I hope you’ll enjoy them!
The amount of amazing stuff you read and share is incredible, Philip also, my SPFBOX is SO ON 😂🔥😁
Alright! I hope you’ll discover some gems in your SPFBOX books, Abel!

Of blood and fire was a disgusting mess of plagiarism
Ouch! I wouldn’t go that far, but I’ll agree that Cahill wears his influences on his sleeve in Of Blood and Fire. That’s something I personally don’t mind too much as long as I’m getting a good story.
