SCRIPT : Steven Holl has said that one of his most important building materials is light.
He was very inspired of northern light, which comes from a low angle, it helped him to make these special angles that we can see here in the building.
The name "Kiasma", it actually comes from a Greek word which means the intersection of optical nerves.
Kiasma is much more than a museum, means that it's a meeting place for art and people. It's not a monument. We want to provide a platform for discussion and for people to interact with each other, and with the art.
We have 25 galleries in Kiasma, each of them has a different slice of natural light in them. So different treatment of natural light is a very essence in Steven Holl's thinking.
Steven Holl's suggestion (of Kiasma) was very successfull because he very carefully studied the history of this very place, this location, the people, the Helsinki history. Then he very carefully thought that what kind of building and now the building would sit very naturally to this place, and topography of this place.
I also appreciate so greatly about Steven's thoughts about visitors.
He created here a grand scale, it has grand forms and curves in the building. Then he has created lots of small details, lots of beautiful beautiful things, concreted, floor, copper details, brass details, glass details.
But then the middle scales, it's not there. Because we're the middle scale, we bring the middle scale, like human scale, the presence to the museum.
I think that his thoughts were deeply philosophical in this sense.
We have wanted to continue in the spirit of Steven Holl's ideas that he always favoured a little bit of roughness.
The work of art, it requires quite radical things like cutting, or drilling the floor. So afterwards, we don't want to remake it, like clean and smooth, like nothing happened.
We want to stay like that, we want to have a history, have a mark, have not perfect floor.
I think contemporary art matters to us everybody, it helps us understand who we are, really. Each of us has liberty to interpret art as we will.

A pivotal project in the Steven Holl oeuvre -- this project, like the Nelson Atkins galleries in Kansas City, pays enormous attention to the play of light on curving walls. The long curving ramp that leads into the museum from the entry point has become an iconic detail. I'd enjoy making that graceful ascent in the spatial sequence.

Architecture is the only art form in which you can literally enter, and in this case it is a wonderful journey into light.
