Your comment makes absolutely zero sense. The purpose of 10k moi is for people who don’t hit it perfectly dead square. It doesn’t change the fact that the goal should always be to hit it flush and centerface.
I really needed to see this. I'm able to easily swing at that speed but my efficiency is absolutely crap 1.38-1.42. I can get it to 1.44-.1.45 at 118mph. I need help!!!!
That 413-yard drive was done with only 123 mph clubhead speed, insanely efficient and optimized to the max in everything else but clubhead and ball speed. He still can hit those freaky drives but in a completely different way doing it now. I recorded once with 126 mph clubhead speed with my driver on a course the other day and ball only goes 350 yards.
Fascinating technical discussion. The top long drive competitors like Jason are not just muscle bound giants who pound the ball willy nilly, they are scientists of the game, deeply knowledgeable about the technical and physics factors involved. A session like this with Ian really increases the respect they merit. One question: Jason's all out swing, and those of other long drive competitors, involve a huge amount of compressive and rotational torque forces on the knees, and specifically the meniscus. Has Jason ever had issues with meniscus tears, or know of fellow competitors who have? It seems to me that yes, it is good to add 25 yards with intensified effort, but playing well for the long haul and enjoying this great game for life is also an important goal for most of us. One needs to keep in mind the increasing vulnerability of our complex mechanical systems as we age.
Back in 98 I was at the golf club in drayton valley, Alberta one evening and as I finished the round Zuback was out smashing balls hitting the green from 380 out on 1. What a personal show I got!
Many years ago I was at a driving range here in Calgary. Everybody is hitting balls about the same. But all of a sudden there was this so much louder "Whack". Practically shoot the walls. It happened again and I looked around and there was Jason hitting balls about 10 stalls away. It was a sound that was so much louder than everyone else's hit. Impressive!
I think people, myself included, are either scared to miss the ball, shank the ball, or hurt themselves. So they don't swing to their full potential. But just like you're not going to bench 300lbs on your first try,.you're not going to hit a ball center fairway with 20mph more ball speed right away. Bryson says it's practice and especially breaking that mental barrier that gets you to hit further and faster. If you're healthy, I think everyone should try to hit the ball as far as possible. If you're broken like me, maybe accuracy and consistency is the way to go.
So fun to watch! I'm glad to see this changing attitude about speed. When I was learning all everyone did was try to slow me down instead of working with something that has ended up being the best thing for my golf game.
amazing video! as someone who was in his prime without all the tech that is available now for him to be keeping up with the new launch monitor data to continue to hone his craft and help others is something to behold. As someone who has been trying to decrease my AOA as I hit up around 6-9 on driver and trying to be more neutral, I am just going to continue hitting up on it and just get a lower lofted head! or maybe get fit!
Interesting info. Enjoyed it. Looking forward to Part 2. And thank you to Jason for jumping in the comments here and clarifying things for people who have misunderstandings about the video.
The dynamic lie angle discussion is quite interesting especially when you consider the impact of lie angle before length was regulated. I have a 59" long Titleist long drive club in my collection, and when you set it down like a regular driver you basically have the toe pointing straight up. Great content - thanks for getting Zuback on camera!
Fascinating and inspiring video! I recently started hitting 3 to 4 degrees up on the ball and that indeed opened up different shaft options for me. It was like a video-game power up moment!
Please tell me you also filmed a fitting with him. Would be so cool to see him get fitted on some of the new releases and see how a fitter would approach someone with that level of speed and delivery.
What's incredible is that his ball speed numbers aren't any bigger than Rory or Windham Clark, Cameron Champ etc when they open their shoulders. But he's way more optimal, higher launch and lower spin which gets him another 30/40 yards.
Well I have a full thickness tear (complete tear) of my right latissimus dorsi which caused an immediate loss of 10-12 mph CHS. So yes speed isn’t great for me at the moment.
Great conversation. I've just started experimenting with a higher tee height on my driver. It makes a huge difference hitting up on the ball (from an inside path).
413yd total off 186mph bs is possibly the most efficient drive I've ever seen. Spin rate and AoA are as good as it gets for LD. I imagine Mr Zuback in his prime with modern equipment would be 230+ and efficient af
The ball speed, spin and launch relation has a lot to do with the distance. More spin and it balloons, less launch and it sinks etc… just perfect scenarios from his swings.
@@165sos242 Still both me and my brother swig faster. I could get close to 130mph on trackman without warming up. the gcq is gcq when it comes to driving. 126 on quad is like 123 on trackman. I can get there with my 2 iron.
Jason ironically now has the most optimized swing in the world, swing below 130 mph yet carries it 380+ and over 410 yards total. Clearly there is more to distance than this, club speed and ball speed used to be the be all end all. If he can be this efficient and optimized to the max in all the other areas, then they enable him to hit just as long with less effort. His smash was bang on the launch was very high yet spins very low and send it up to the heavens with 11.6 degrees AOA. These distances used to be exclusive to those that swing at 140+ club speed and 210 mph ball speed.
What's crazy is this shows how important launch conditions are. This is a bit of a glass cannon swing but I was swinging an autoflex at 120 and getting 170s ball but I wasn't even sniffing 385 carry because my aoa was around 1 and spin like 2600.
I wondered why Jason no longer compete he definitely still got the speed and distance. Would still be quite a threat in today's Senior Division. I had a discussion with one of the head guys at Foresight. Usually a great efficiency number is 1.45-1.46 on quad. @@FGrecoJR He's hitting some high launch low spin bombs, they're at close to 4k elevation out there probably so add about 40 yards to a drive like that, you'd have a 345 carry, for a 187 ball speed 1700 spin high launch that might be a bit more than realistic but not by a lot.
@blobbilly So you just gonna ignore Quads software issue on low spin drives? Quad is the best launch monitor but it has this issue. Anything below 2500 spin gets less and less accurate the lower you go as far as carry distance.
