Mamula Island Beach Resort Former Fortress Montenegro Entrance to the Bay of Kotor

This fortress was built in 1853 by Austrian General Lazar Mamula. The fortress was created to protect the Bay of Kotor. During WWII the Benito Mussolini's Kingdom of Italy converted it to a concentration camp. In the 1970's it was abandoned until being transformed into hotel and restaurant by Samih Sawiris with the help of architecture firm MCM London. The Montenegrin government approved the renovations.
