This man was once a nineteen year old boy who walked more than 40 miles, up and over 15,000 foot snow covered mountains, in summer clothes for ten days - after 2 months trapped on a mountain, having been through a crash, the death of his mother and sister and friends, an avalanche and having to make unbearable decisions. It was a feat of monumental proportions, bravery and strength. Nando Parrado is my all time hero.

THE most inspiring story that took place in my lifetime. There is simply no explanation for this man's accomplishment other than unprecedented courage, survival instinct, & absolute refusal to quit.
The fact of his escape defies any reason. Highly trained & fully equipped expert mountaineers in peak condition have been unable to duplicate his feat. Throw in 72 days of starvation, exhaustion, mandatory cannibalism, O2 deprivation, & incalculable grief. It's inexplicable. The epitome of a hero.

THIS is what it's all about people! If this doesn't prove that anything can be gotten through, I don't now what does. When you are at your weakest and you think you can no longer take even one more step...think of these men. We think we know depression & despair. "Most" of us don't have a clue. kids today are shooting their parents for taking away their gameboy. Sheesh

@steve998 This man is my hero too. I don't mean to nitpick here but he was 23 when he made his journey across the Andes. The boy he was with Roberto Canessa I think was only 18 or 19.
Im 23 myself and I wonder if I could have done what this man did but I'll probably never know the answer to that question

Is there something wrong with his left eye?
I saw an interview from 06 or 07 and his eyes were nornal and it seems his left eye is partially closed here in late 2010.
How is his health? I love this man!

This man walked out of the Andes Mountains after a plane crash in blue jeans and rugby cleats.
    You didn't.
You may want to take the time to listen to what he has to say.

He survive, because this wisdom was already within him. i am well beyond impressed. When i became disabled, i had my "mini" Andes, in the sense that all the money i earned, all the "things" i had acquired meant nothing. What meant everything was my Family, and doing my best to keep them as mentally strong as possible, in a maelstrom of confusion they had never experienced.
i grew up quite poor, so i had experience with having very little, but my kids had known nothing but comfort. in the long run, it will be something they will have gained from, because they know they can survive now, too.

94981745 That eye has always been a bit wonky, remember the coke bottle thick glasses Nando wore in the 70's? It does look a bit exaggerated, here, but I'm sure it's from him being tired. He's fine.
