I've just started to learn the bass guitar and have asked tons of local players about the fit between the bass and drum and gotten tons of different answers that really didn't make sense. Finally, in this video, you've answered that question. Clearly, I've been talking to the wrong people. It all makes sense now. Thanks for the tutorial that you may not have realized you made for the bass player.
Hi keep up the good work. Please can you make a video on how to setup in-ear monitors on an analog mixer i.e. connections and everything that has to do with in-ear monitors
Estaba realmente preocupado por hacer una buena mezcla en la iglesia, no soy experto en audio y si algo suena mal suelo hacer mas brillante el canal, pero ahora con tu contenido puedo mejorar el audio. Thanks a lot from Mexico! keep going!
I previously hated adding distortion on bass until I figured out how to do it right. The best way I found is to use parallel processing. Setup your primary channel for just a good solid sound. On your secondary channel, high pass around 200 and low pass around 2k. Then compress the snot out of it. Once you do this, find a distortion processor that will give you a nice round warm distortion with a lot of harmonics. You want to make sure there is no bite or raspy harshness to the sound, just a lot of mid-range harmonics. Then GENTLY mix this in with the primary channel. This allows you to pick up detail and tonal definition without getting a nasty sound. It stands up in the mix. Subtle grace notes or runs are not lost, both due to the distortion and the heavy compression. I like a bass that represents the same feel as a pipe organ. Long sustained bass notes do not have to be loud or obnoxious to make the image sound huge. Many make the mistake of using the drums - primarily the kick to give the big image, however this gets bothersome, and will get you complaints that it is too loud. Use the bass for imaging. Drums are just for punch. The 70s engineers knew this, but didn't have the massive subs to fill out the very low end with bass guitar.
Hi, I appreciate very much all your videos, and especially the ones for specific instruments like this one (bass) and for vocals. I would like to see videos for - violine (considering microphone or other recording equipment) - trumpet, and - cajon. 🙂
James, your instructional videos are indispensable to my band. Thank you. We have a gig coming up at a venue famous for crap acoustics. Without your stuff, we'd be toast.
So true. Except, when taking bass lessons in high school, I wanted to learn to play like Victor Wooten, but none of that ever translated to playing at church. Or maybe I was just going to the wrong church 😂

Brother, Such a great channel! I'm new to it but already I've learned so much in a short time. Will you be doing any videos on recording? Again, great channel! Thanks!!
Agree that it is all about the low end with live music. Really appreciate your sharing skills and excellent delivery. I have two questions if you would be kind enough to help with? The situation: A live band that I mix has a bass player who insists on using a wireless transmitter to his bass cab, which I take an XLR signal from for my mixer channel. He has a five string with upgraded pick ups. I route the Bass guitar and Kick drum to an aux feed which goes to the subwoofers. I use compression and EQ on the channel. Last night I was using 4:1 ratio, attack at 10 and release at 60, compressor gain at +6DB. My EQ favored 60HZ +3 DB. I was getting some missing bass notes and some intermittent clipping, although the channel gain was where it should be. Q; Can a wireless transmitter cause transients that create clipping on the subwoofers? Q; Since his low string is REALLY low, how should I notch out a place for my kick drum and still be able to keep the low end that classic rock needs. I also mix for church where everything is hard wired and we have two five string bassists with no issues. I am going to follow your advice on compression and EQ for the bass and see what that does. Beyond that, any advice? Best regards.
it’s all about the low end! when i first started making beats, i’d leave high passes off the sub bass tracks because i thought more bass meant better bass. im learned now!
It's all about the low end. :) I've gone to using a multiband comp on bass. I find I gain a ton of control over certain frequencies that tend to excite the room without compromising the overall tone and clarity.

I need your help and guidance please. I am forming a 3 piece band, I only have a electric guitar, vocals and bassist for now (so use 3 inputs). We connect these 3 inputs to the mixer. All the videos on youtube/google do not explain how to EQ this on a mixer with three EQ knobs. What do I do with the EQ (high 12khz, mid 80hz, low 2.5khz) knobs for the bass, electric guitar and vocals please. I leave them all neutral, as I assume naturally the EQ is in the instruments.....the bass will just do the low notes, the electric the mid range and your natural vocals just as picked up by the mic but I want to adjust the EQ to best suit/enhance/isolate each of these inputs. I heard to never boost and only to cut but then why cut when the oiginal instrument wants to play those frequencies e.g cutting the bass makes the bass less bassy. The only videos I see showing anything to do with this are either using a mixer which shows a digital eq, or it being done in DAW software, I just need it in its simplest form. If you cannot help with the guitar and bass, can you tell me what standard setting of the three EQ knobs for vocals please. Thanks.
You have to use the 3 knobs as "general shaping" tools rather than "precision" tools. Most of the time, let the instrument be the instrument, but cut out what it DOESN'T need, and things will still be there. Hiss or fret noise on the bass? Cut the highs. Muffled vocals (they will be)? Cut lows, and balance that with the high mids and the highs. Maybe cut a little mids if it's too "present" or "piercing" at that frequency, but don't go crazy.
I play through a Sans Amp and I usually set bass at 1, mid at 12 and treble at 1 but in me ears it still sounds like too much high end. So should i just leave alone since there is probably not that much high end coming out of the house?
There's a final balance of making yourself feel comfortable and making the tone balanced in the house, and it's definitely a problem that happens with playing bass in IEMs. Just make sure your IEMs are sealed though, because when they're not, you won't get the right amount of low end and everything sounds like there's too much highs, especially your bass.
Hi, I know this is older but just coming across it now. Any other hints on using sidechain settings like HC or linking trigger to kick drum? Love your work btw.
It's possible to use a sidechain compressor so the kick drum bumps down the bass a little bit, but I usually get enough "space" between them using EQ and compression to make it so the kick adds the punch and the bass adds the sustain, so I haven't fiddled with it.

I typically just use a DI for the bass like you described. If I have a bass amp i addition, I’m trying to go for a specific tone (usually a little rounder or more crunchy/distorted) to mix in with the direct signal and blend differently from song to song

I love having an amp channel for a “dirty” bass signal to mix with a clean(er) DI signal. Multiband compression can be really helpful for taming root notes vs overtones too. Keeps the “tone” and the “feel” locked in place
That's not really a sound problem, it's a leadership problem. Someone's in charge of the bassist, and it's their responsibility to make sure everyone is in their role, playing their part (more ways than one), and not overstepping their role. The bass amp cranked is the bass player making him/herself more important than everyone else, and while that is an issue that causes you pain, it's the band leader/worship leader/leadership team's job to make sure they're "playing nice" with everyone else. So you could go to the band leader/worship leader and say "hey, this is a problem that I see and maybe you don't, but you have the authority to ask this guy to turn his bass amp down. If you delegate to me that authority, I'll ask him, but I need to know you have my back on this."
@@AttawayAudio thank you! I have been trying to be subtle... they want to feel the low end, old school style... but I am getting that to them from the subs... BUT I have adjusted the EQ and compression and that has helped tremendously! I think I just had them too thin...
Bass amps don’t typically reach as low as you might think, so I default to using a DI. Also, a mic on the bass amp can tend to pick up a lot of bleed from drums or guitar amps too. If I do use a mic on the amp, it’s so I can get some of the midrange grit/distortion to mix in with the clean DI signal
Attaway Audio also it’s a very small church so no subwoofers are used we use 2 jbl eon ones which claim to have a subwoofer incorporated i guess. Do you think it would be better to use these ass the bass output with the whole mix? Or the bass amo
I don’t usually, unless the bass is playing a melodic part, and if they are, the bass player typically has a pedal. Bass resonates a lot in live sound, so I don’t want to add to it necessarily.

yes please 😃
What would you recommend in a smaller room? Bass amp xlr output to mixer? Or just bass amp? Feels like it lacks something with just the bass amp

It's all about that big and round bass.
In our church, our bass player just sets their bass knobs at full, resulting to muddy sound. So I bust boost to cut it through the mix.
yeah there's this idea that if it's a bass, I should boost all the bass.... but that's not exactly what EQ is for :)
What type of reverb would you recommend for bass?
I don’t usually, unless the bass is playing a melodic part, and if they are, the bass player typically has a pedal. Bass resonates a lot in live sound, so I don’t want to add to it necessarily.
