    Screw the floor and it will never creek and squeak. Nail the floor and squeaks happen over time as the nail is pulled and rubs on the substrate. More work, but better long term.

    If you're jacking up from the main floor, there needs to be a basement support directly underneath also, otherwise the floor joists will sag under the weight/pressure. Also if the floor joists are bowed, cut the nails from each end and flip the board crown up. If the crown is excessive, plane them down to level. Could save some costs. And for the love of god, remember the joists blockers for extra support and to prevent twisting!

  • @troyfortune4124
    @troyfortune4124 4 месяца назад +14

    When sistering joists make sure to glue and screw. Much stronger bonding and will prevent squeaking in the future. Same for the OSB. You will regret not doing that.

      They 100% are load bearing! That span is exactly twice as wide as the joists can span! Not only that, but it's balloon framed and doesn't have the necessary support at the exterior wall!

They built a 7500 sq ft home (plus 2000 sq ft basement) they lived in a little trailer on the property until it was dried in then we all moved in.. . My cousins husband is from Denmark and they travelled to Europe often to shop for their appliances, tiles etc for their home. On Sunday mornings we all piled onto the huge extra long king bed and had tea, scones and watched “ this old house”. I was 16 at the time. It truly felt like I was living in a dream. There were some pretty big problems at my home, hence why I left. I will never hear this old house and not think about those many months of this lovely slow start to a Sunday.

    Hi Guys from the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York! I love watching your progress and the interaction between the teammates. You guys are funny! But seriously as a Dad and someone who has been on lots of construction sites over the last 4 decades could you please consider wearing safety glasses? You all are a bit cavalier with smashing stuff that splinters or shatters. Its a hazard and eyes are hard to fix. Keep doing such a great job! Cole I hope you know how blessed you are to be renovating a family treasure. Sure it takes hard work and money but having the opportunity is simply priceless. The house will be phenomenal when you complete it. And you will have a lifetime of memories. Best regards, GZ

    Gentlemen,
    The screws and the adhesive on the joists under the OSB, are the best way to avoid 'squeaks' in the floor.
    The sistering of the joists is also going to make for a much stronger floor. Good job!
    In my opinion your videos will probably not only entertain, but educate as you're working through each task, as you work on the restoration. Once on the famous TV program 'This Old House', Mr. Norm Abram, master woodworker, was talking about not enough young people wanting to enter the carpentry trade. I think your videos might help plant the 'seed' of looking at a career in carpentry / construction. Thats like the cherry on the sundae, of what you're focused on accomplishing. That is a wonderful thing.
    Roman, hope you can find a hammer that can hold up to your demolishing. As i mentioned before, you don't need to prove anything. Nothing wrong with 275. Not many 275's around. Just be yourself.
    In other ways - each of you are 300's, because each of you has different strong points. God gives each of us a gift. Just do the best you can with it, and be careful so you go home to your families in one piece. God bless.

    Why did you not use a bead of construction adhesive between the floor joists and the subfloor 42:00 in addition to screws for added strength and squeak prevention? Also, where are your noggins between the floor joists?

    Great video is always . Just a suggestion when you put your sewer drain back in the wall you may want to use cast-iron that way you won’t hear the water running down the pipe in the wall with cast-iron. You won’t hear the water going down the pipe. Just a suggestion.

    Cole, I also have a huge old farmhouse. Mine is about 5000 square feet and built in 1890 in Lyndon Vermont. I made use of a large unused attic space by building a really neat movie theater with a stage and stadium seating. It will seat up to 12 people. I made it as much like a real theater as possible. Its been a huge hit with friends and family. Most cant believe I did it. You may want to try it with all that extra space.

    Oh my goodness! I helped my father remodel our home. I learned to strip, sand, stain, and varnish all the wood in the house. He then did antiques he found. That door behind you in the kitchen is gorgeous! Do whatever it takes to save the doors, especially if they have the original glass. ❤😊 This crazy weather is perfect for gutting the house! It's been absolutely fantastic. Just the right temperature not to get hot inside, and not freeze your caboose. The weather alone has to be getting some time shaved off. 😊

    Make sure you get the required amount of bridging in between your floor joists installed before putting your subfloor on, or you could have a torsional buckling structural failure of the floor joist. You really don't want that to happen.

  • @douglaskuhn3781

    You need to get a book called "Modern Carpentry". It has 'span tables' which you obviously need! The support walls you are removing prevent 'deflection' of the floor above. You will have sagging, squeaky, weak floors without them.

    Try screwing in drywall screws to your existing wall frame. We had to add all new 2×4 and sister them to the existing. Our 1800 farm house the wood had basically petrified. Dad got tired of predrilling for every drywall screw. So he just slapped up new 2×4s to make putting drywall up easier. It's something you should test now while the house is gutted. Just see if you have to fight the wood with drywall screws

    • @dave7038
      @dave7038 4 месяца назад +1

      Yup, I'm doing drywall over 100 year old studs and rafters right now and that old wood is so dry and hard. We put 2x2 furring strips on all the old studs. Makes putting in the drywall screws much easier (partly because the torque is consistent, so the screws are easier to set properly), plus we get a couple more inches of insulation.
