This stations was built to be the "flagship station" of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company. It is like no other station in the system. The architecture and tile work are unlike any of the other stations and would be impossible to replicate at any price. It is a true jewel of the system. It had to be taken out of service because the trains got longer in number of cars and in length of each car. I guess the Transit Museum does run occasional tours through the station. It is unfortunate that it can't be reopened for regular use or as an offshoot of the Transit Museum.

You can't have shorter subway trains. The system is already at capacity. Running shorter trains with fewer cars would reduce capacity. Also wouldn't be worth the maintenance, cleaning and staffing budget with Brooklyn Bridge station being so close by. They originally closed it because few passengers were using it.

It's never going to be used as a major station again. It's just impractical. The platform is too short, and the doors of the cars sit too far back from the platform to be considered safe. That and the fact that when this station first went into service in 1904, subway trains pulled far fewer cars than they do in the present day, meaning you wouldn't be able to offload the old passengers, and pick up the new ones in all the cars in one stop. You'd have to unload the first ones, pull forward a bit, and unload the remaining cars. That's just a pain in the ass, if you ask me.
It's a real shame it's past it's usefulness... because it's a beautiful piece of architecture.

Train stations that are long and weird to get out if. Atlantic ave station and Canal street on the A line. This vid alone makes me sad. I am glad for the train noise. Just gives me a sense of hope. NYC is horrible with no people or animals. It's a death trap on its own. The city literally cannot function.on its own. It would fall apart within days of people evacuating. The city would be under water in a year except uptown Broadway on 181St. The movie "I am legend" has me in tears every time I watch it. ive been through it once long ago. back then you could legally ride the train as it made its loop to its uptown traffic side. from my understanding today the station has been renovated and has tours. but still doesnt function as a serviced station.

When I was there 9/11/21 week, I stayed on the #6 to ride through it. They got me real good by stopping for about 3 minutes. I thought I was made. But evidently it was just to sync up with the schedule.

I guess the easiest way instead of walking through the tunnel, risking being hit by a train is to just jump on a passing train in between the cars.
