You have to admire the algorithm...Funny parallel to me but in reverse. I'm also a 2 Canyon owner. I got an Endurace (not Ultimate) CF SL 7.0 Disc in late 2018. My entry into the carbon bike world. It's the mechanical 105 groupset bike. I absolutely love it and have put over 11,000 miles on it. Just a few weeks ago I got the new Aeroad CF SL Disc 8.0 AF. It was a big purchase - I'm very fortunate to be able to have these two wonderful bikes. I'm very happy with both of them. Even though the Aeroad is clearly the faster bike, I'm still getting used to how it behaves in various conditions i.e. I'm not at full confidence when riding the Aeroad yet. Contrast that with the Endurace, which is the slower bike but one I'm much more confident on, having ridden every inch of all my usual roads many times. Especially descents - I BOMB down descents on the Endurace without hesitation. The Aeroad's handling isn't second nature to me yet - and the 62mm deep wheels are sails in the wind. The Aeroad clearly shines when it's fast on the flat. The difference is night and day over 20mph. Taking pulls on the front of the group ride is less daunting now 😂. The Aeroad climbs very well too. My local area has short punchy climbs less than 5 minutes, so the Aeroad is more than capable here. If I were to head into the mountains with 10+ minute steep climbs, the Endurace with its 32t cassette would be the bike of choice (Aeroad comes with a 28). This is a VERY professional and well done review Travis. I thoroughly enjoyed your well thought out talking points, and with great delivery. You should be teaching courses to beginning actors on how to plant their feet. Most people can't do that. Cheers and happy, safe riding.
Brian Messemer thanks for the support. I do my best to keep the feet planted 😉. Great observations on the role comfort and familiarity have on speed. A truly more aerodynamic bike should perform at its best on a descent, but if you are more confident in handling or braking on another bike, it may end up being faster. A key point I hoped to get across in this video is that, for most of us, the actual differences between the bikes are small, so pick the one that feels better to ride.
Your excellent reviews impacted my decision and as of last week I am the proud owner of a Aeroad CF SL 8.0 Di2. A camera can be very powerful.... be careful where you point that thing.

Your videos are all very interesting. I hope you will continue to publish some. I hesitated between Aeroad and Ultimate. Your video on the subject helped me a lot. I think I'm going to focus now on Aeroad in XS, which wasn't my first choice.
Be warned: Do not buy a bike Canyon their customer service is the worst I have ever experienced from any company ever - bike arrived damaged and these guys will just try to low ball you if you do not accept their low ball offer customer service will ignore you!!! The difference is in the marketing, it is what CANYON (and others) attempt to make you believe that you need this bike for this and this bike for that. When will people get int their heads reviews are designed to make you buy, and that is the bottom line. I have a LOOK bike, apparently an inferior climbing bike in comparison to Canyon, yet I get to the top and ride my Alpen Brevits, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Tannheimertal (2018) all done with the LOOK bike. You do not need an expensive bike, you need the training and the legs. Job done!
Wow, this results are impressive. I'm waiting to buy a used one on winter time or a new one on black friday. I was going towards the Ultimate but know I changed my mind. For know I will stick with my old carbon scott CR1 team with Zipp's 404/808 wheels.

I’m glad you found it useful. The difference between the frames is so small I could just as well be wrong too on which is faster in certain conditions. If the Aeroad seemed 10s faster up a 20 minute 5% climb, a friendly breeze or lots of cars passing that day is worth probably 3x that much and could be the real reason for the differences. Haines Point though…a place we all love to hate!

Interesting to see you went from a Small Aeroad to the XS Ultimate for your second Canyon. I'm 68" with 30.5" inseam, so smack dab right in between a S & XS. May I ask your measurements, which I think will be valuable in deciding which way to go on a new Aeroad. I know our body types may be wildly different, but when you have to buy a bike online without proper sizing, getting help from the community is better than nothing. TIA Travis ...
My saddle height is roughly 70cm (bb ring to mid saddle), which is the only significant adjustment choice you get. I also have a Grizl in XS and if getting a new Aeroad would size down as well. I never feel too cramped on the smaller frames, but also spend a lot of time in drops compared to most riders, so maybe am using more available space. If the adjustment ranges of two bikes work with room on both ends, I would always pick the smaller frame since it's almost certainly faster. I would also prefer needing to get a slightly longer stem to perfect reach than deal with a long top tube then super short stem, which could make handling a bit odd.

The Canyon website only allows 2 sizing criteria for fitting a bike, height and inseam. That's why I added my measurements to see how close they may be to your measurements, in hopes it could get me to focus on a S or XS. @@giosal8822 67", 30-30.5 ish inseam, depending how snug to get! Personally I prefer to consider the needed bike measurements since two people with the same limbs might have vastly different cleat positions, heel drop, flexibility, etc., and end up with different ideals. You might be like me in that either one works fine and will have enough adjustability to make your fit work. Some people just have preferences for relatively more or less top tube and how it makes the bike feel. I'm in the prefer less camp, but not sure either is necessarily better if they both fit.
Very good review and highly appreciated i have a Canyon Endurace and was hesitating between Aeroad or ultimate i love the Aeroad shape(and i'm not a wight weenie i have realized long time ago that few hundreds grams don't make a difference unless you are riding a grand tour where 3-5 W over 5 hours a day for 3 weeks can have an impact) but wasn't sure if i shouldn't go for the Ultimate at 64 i think this might be my last bike change as i now tend to keep them longer (my Endurace is nearly 4 years old) and you convinced me to go for the Aeroad thanks

Great Video, I own Trek Domane SL6 which is endurance bike, I live in California which is very mountainous, I mostly do climbing around 2K to 4K elevation, endurance is really giving hard time climbing, so far I was going for ULTIMATE CF SLX and now after looking at this Video I'm tempting for Aero.. Majority of my ride goes towards climbing only, pls suggest buying Ultimate is good choice as in pandemic it is hard to find the find and We can't even look or feel Canyon before buy as it is online only..
Get what you can get and will fit you well. The difference between these two frames is very small, and at most is a few seconds on a higher speed climb (e.g. 5% gradient averaging 14+ mph for 20 minutes). I also very well could be wrong about the Aeroad being just slightly faster on an uphill shallow time trial since the difference is that small! Changing wheels, optimizing tire pressures, your own position, or getting more power by riding a few more hours every week are all more likely to show up as speed than small differences in frames.
Thank you! The thing with bike fit on integrated stems is that you have to replace everything and route the cables anew... PITA... Your review was very well structured and made me reconsider my next purchase, as I was leaning towards a climbing bike. But with climbing biked getting disc brakes and aero upgrades... the lines of separation are becoming more and more blurry...;)
Adam Kubiak I think integrated bar/stems are a nice placebo that make the rider give a few more w’s ;). The point I was hoping to make in this is that the frame differences are very small, and much smaller than the effects of wheel choice, tire, pressure, and maybe even clothing. The Aeroad is faster if climbing at higher speeds (20-25kph+), but otherwise the same. But speaking of PITA...disc brakes that almost always end up rubbing, and more so when standing and you need power the most!
Travis Hunnicutt right... there’s a lovely selection of high-end second hand aero bikes with rim brake now, that people are obsessing over getting discs or get their choices limited by manufacturers.
Hi Travis, could it be because of the crank length? I have a Speedmax CF 8.0 size S (as PPS suggested me) and I am now considering to buy Ultimate CF SL 8.0 Di2 Aero Disc. I am 172cm height and 80cm inseam and PPS suggests me with XS size, which has shorter crank (170cm) instead 172,5cm crank for size S Canyon. Maybe that's why you are still faster with Aeroad? It's still stock crank right for both bikes?

Presumably its the Ultimate that'd better suit me, but I like the idea of being able to go that little bit faster. Do you have a suggestion for how I could determine if the style of the Aeroad would suit me? And have you reviewed the more current bikes?
aeroad is much lower on the front end. unless you are riding very aggressively on the defy, choosing the ultimate may be a wiser choice. no point choosing the aeroad and still retaining inches of stem spacers. you can fit the ultimate with a set of slightly deeper wheels to regain the aero loses.
Great video - one I keep coming back to while I'm waiting for my Ultimate to arrive even though I much prefer the looks and performance profile of the Aeroad (I was very lucky to find my size XL in the Ultimate so went for it) - my most important question is - how do they ride and what are their ride qualities? Which one feels nicer, more comfortable, is one better for short rides vs long rides, do you do many 100km+ rides, do you ride on perfect roads in Germany where they came from, or is there any difference at all? I've heard the Aeroad is a bit harsher, which makes sense, but seeing as though you ride both what are your thoughts? At the moment I think I'll update to the Aeroad next year, however I'll have the 30 day return policy and the new Aeroad's are coming soon...
Buying a bike these days sounds difficult. Not the paying part, but actually getting your hands on what you want. I ride them both quite a bit, with plenty of 100k+ rides on all sorts of terrain. The Ultimate may be slightly softer on bumpy terrain since the seat post has a bit more flex and the bar tape on mine is softer than what is on the Aeroad. I do tend to take the Ultimate on bumpier roads, but that's more because it has slightly more tire clearance and is the one I would more often put 28 or 30's on. The differences between frames, though, are not that big and are way less than what you would sense from changing wheels, tires, or tire pressures. The newer version of the Aeroad seems to blend features of both bikes as well.

It is a hell of a time to buy anything bicycle related - I'm one of the unlucky ones who bought their first bike and got into cycling right before COVID happened, so I've been unable to test ride any bikes or even get fitted since (I'm in Australia with very strict lockdown laws) so trying to buy my first "proper" road bike without that experience is a nightmare (and of course two years later I'm too impatient to wait until it's all over), not to mention there are no bikes available to buy anyway! But content like yours helps people like me greatly - we can only trust paid cycling publications so much - so I really appreciate it!
I'm have an Ultimate but I'm not an ultimate rider, i.e. although I raced (mostly last place) when I was younger; so the bottom line for my thinking is which do you like to ride better?
This was exactly the review I needed... except now I’ve flopped back the the Aeroad. I’ve been hovering over the “buy” button since they came back in stock last week. Did you have any initial problems with either bike when you received them?
The derailleur hanger (a part designed to break) was broken on the Aeroad when it came, so I told them and they mailed me another a couple days later. Order a spare anyways since they are proprietary to most bikes and good to have on hand if it breaks later on. The only other thing I've heard to watch out for with online-ordered bikes is to make sure the parts you ordered are what you got. If you see my Ultimate review video I talk about how the bar/stem that came on it was actually a size smaller than spec for the XS. So far I've been fine with that since I wanted to try narrower bars, but if, for example, it was a different crank size, cassette, wheel type, etc. it would be a different story.
I own the ultimate and have ridden my friends aeroad... i would have to disagree... the ultimate is much less stiff and more comfortable than the aeroad. I believe because your ultimate is a size smaller it threw off your comparison
Interesting. In what way do you think the Ultimate is less stiff? I find it very difficult to sense any millimeter or smaller differences in carbon frame flex when tires, pressure, wheel spoke flex, seat rails, and bearing play are all there and by design cushion the ride. I frequently change wheel sets between bikes, including using the original Ultimate wheels on the Aeroad and vice versa, which really helps single out where certain sensations are coming from.

jorgefgr I’m on the line between the two sizes. I had the Aeroad first, and though I can ride all day in the drops, my hands often sit a cm or 2 back from the hoods when fully relaxed, so I thought a shorter top tube in the xs would make sense. My saddle height is about 71.5cm.

About 5’7”, saddle height just under 29”. Canyon’s fit calculator now would tell me XS for both bikes, but I think it had me between S and XS when I got the Aeroad.

This topic always invites spirited discussion. For the type of riding I do, rim brakes are the best choice. If I rode outside a lot in rain down long, twisty -15% gradients I'd probably feel the tradeoffs for disc brakes are worth it. But I don't. I keep giving disc brakes a try whenever I rent bikes, etc. since it seems the industry wants to go full disc, but they always rub to some degree. The sound of metal rubbing is lost watts, and probably quite a few. I also prefer the wider range of braking force I can apply on rims vs disc (i.e. discs can go from no slowing to skid with just a small lever movement). Rim brakes do the needed job without costing watts, so in my mind are superior. They're also much easier to maintain.
I strongly agree with your comments...rim brakes are perfect for where and how I ride...however, you are correct...it looks like more and more manufacturers will only offer disk brakes...too bad. Keep up the great work

I recommend using bike dimensions (top tube, seat height, etc.) to select your bike since flexibility, preferences, cleat position, and similar things can make a big difference when frames only differ by 1-2cm each. That said, I'm a fan of erring on the smaller sizes for frames. Good luck!
Hi Travis, I'm wondering what your height is. I'm looking to get the Ultimate and I'm 5'6" (167.64cm). I'm not sure if I should get get suggested XS or size down to XXS.
I'm about 5'7" and an XS Ultimate fits me great, but I also ride a S Aeroad. The XXS, I believe, might come with shorter cranks (165), a shorter stem (80), and narrower bars (370), so those aspects are worth considering more than the basic frame size. This Ultimate has the 370mmx80mm bars actually meant for the XXS. I like them, but many people would find them very narrow.
Hi Travis. Thank you for the video. Unfortunately when I came across it, I had already ordered my Aeroad on size SMALL. I’m 5’4 and it just didn’t feel right. Fortunately I was able to exchange it for a XS. Based on the fact that my previous bike was S I can now say that Canyon bikes run large. Either downside or consult a professional fitter and he will advise based on the measurements. Thank you again
Jorge Lara I agree the sizes dont necessarily match with who is “large” and “small” in the cycling world, and people shouldnt be deterred from picking XS or XXS just based on that label.

J Nijkamp You would probably be ok on either size, but might as well look into the smaller one. The biggest hard issue would be seat height, so just make sure your current seat height is well within the range of the XS. The seat tube on Aeroads is long, so it’s a big range, but theres not much you could do if that ended up being too low for you. Good luck with your new bike hunt!

Jonathan Delhotal I plan to have more than one bike as long as I’m into the sport, but between these two it would be an Aeroad in xs (same as the ultimate), with at least one better wheelset.
@@john2lhotalify For most of the climbs I have access to, I think it's simply faster. I don't have enough comparison on 10%+, but definitely at things like 5-6% they're almost even, but with a slight nod to the Aeroad. The better someone is at climbing, the more I'd expect that is true. Willie Smit did a good video showing his heavier TT bike was faster than an Aeroad even on a 6% hill and he was only doing 4.5w/kg. Thanks for this comparison. I was attracted to the Ultimate as a fast bike that will fit some pretty large tires for light gravel riding (i.e., it'll take 32s), but I understand the Aeroad has the same tire clearance. Can you verify? Thanks!
On mine the Ultimate takes a few mm wider, but these are both rim brake versions. I've used 30s on the Ultimate (rated for 28) and even confirmed they narrowly fit the Aeroad (rated 25) with no rubbing. The newest ones are all disc and should fit wider than either of mine. Between the two it makes sense the Aeroad would require smaller tires since the seatpost is shaped around the wheel. In spite of what is listed (and danger to warranty), both probably would fit 32s, if not larger.
Was thinking of getting an Ultimate but i'm inbetween sizes of Small and XS. Have only tested an Endurace in small and although the size was ok, i did feel a tiny bit stretched out. The XS geometry just looks too small going by the numbers.
From the model years I have, I've come to favor the ultimate since it's just a bit easier to travel with, maintain, etc. and handles better. The handling is most likely due more to size than how the frames are made. Picking between current model years would be difficult. The width adjustable handlebars originally on the Aeroad are appealing to me, but I think they also added those to Ultimates now.
Hello Travis, how do they compare in terms of ride feel? Is Aerod more aggressive and nibble than the Ultimate? Which one feels more stable on descents? or do they feel about the same? I think most differences in ride feel come from things like tires, pressure, wheels, etc. so since I swap wheels on bikes depending on the ride, it changes the main feel quite a bit. My Ultimate is a size smaller, so the 2cm shorter top tube is noticeable and I think I can handle the smaller bike better. I think I mentioned in the video that I tend to get a lot of downhill PR’s on the Ultimate, even though supposedly the Aeroad is more aerodynamic. I attribute most of that to feeling more confident on the Ultimate at high speed, so brake less and tuck more.
Looking at these models today. Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero 5199 €, Aeroad CF SLX 8 Disc Di2 6749 €. Both with Ultegra di2 and DT Swiss cf wheels. The Ultimate is about 200 g lighter. I don't get the price difference of 1550 €. Seems way too much.
That is a big difference. The names mean the Aeroad should have a higher grade carbon. Having never ridden anything but their SLX frames, I'm not sure I could tell the difference, but maybe there is one. Good luck selecting!
Great review. I am in the market and trying to deicde to with the aeroad or ultimate. I live in a mostly flat area with a few hills to climb up. I am thinking potentially the aeroad would suit me best but I also want to do some fair weather 30min commuting to work and worry that it would be too uncomfortable to ride with a small back pack. What would you recommend?
I don’t know about commuting on either bike, especially if you’ll end up locking (piling) it along with a bunch of other bikes. Isn’t that what steel frames are for? But if you insist, I dont see much comfort or ride difference between them, and what I do notice I think comes from the wheels, tires, saddle, and bar tape-all things you can change.

I was more worried about riding it with a backpack on. I know both bikes are totally overkill to ride to work but currently I can only have one bike so I was looking for something that is fun and fast but has to be able to do some everyday riding too
Of course. If someone enjoys the sport, why not enjoy it with the best equipment they can? There are plenty of unskilled drivers in really high performance cars, etc.

I think I know the answer, but I want to hear it from someone who has two bikes of the same brand. I have experienced myself riding two bikes but from different brands. A lightweight and an aero bike on the same route (short 50km). I did the same route a few, like 2 minutes quicker and with a higher speed average. But I thought maybe it was because of the difference in brands Thanks in advance
I often forget which bike I’m on while riding, so that’s to say I don’t sense or measure much difference. If I change wheels or tires on them, sure I feel and can measure speed differences, but I don’t think too much comes from just the frame. Probably what helmet you wear determines more watts. I’d get the one that looks nicer and fits well first.
I have the ultimate cf slx 2018 Campagnolo Super Record Mechanical with Bora one 35 clinchers and the Ultimate cf slx in the previous version 2014 in Dura Ace. The newer version is definitely faster. I would say around 7% faster on all my Strava routes. My main point though is that you’re comparing apples and pears. Different wheels, tyres, saddles. These all make a difference.
Interesting that you think the newer Ultimate is that much better than a 2014 version. One point I wanted to convey in this video is that these two frames aren't terribly far from each other, so no need to really fret over which one to get. I agree that wheels and tires in particular have a huge affect on ride quality, but they are also very commonly swapped and replaced, leaving the real variable at the frame level.

I’ve generally found their size recommending tools to be good, and more helpful if you know at least some key bike dimensions. Like if between two sizes, probably better to opt for the one where your saddle height isn’t at an end of the available range. Otherwise, if really on the fence I personally prefer a smaller frame. Yes, I’d go XS Aeroad if replacing. My fit is within the S range too, but I prefer the less head tube, shorter top tube route to get there. You’re about the same size as me.
I'm very relieved that there isn't necessarily a night and day difference between these two bikes. How is the comfort level of the Aeroad on a long endurance ride? Say 50-70 miles?

No gains in terms of aero when climbing. It is just you that make the difference. Are you using the same components? waxing of your chain, is it the same? handle bars. bottom brackets are they the same? Chain too. to have a full effect, it must be above a kilo. 350g is nothing.
Yes, basically every component is the same between these two bikes (groupsets, lubes), including even the bar/stem combo since I changed the Aeroad's for the narrower type that came with the Ultimate. Aerodynamics are still very important on most things people call climbs, though the most determinant factors in aero are how the rider is positioned and what they are wearing. One of the biggest variables I have found with these bikes is in which wheels/tires I use, with deeper and slightly wider rims needing fewer watts up faster climbs (5%) than shallower/narrower.
I have no plans to sell either and don't see how the new Aeroad would be a meaningful upgrade. The main thing I would have been interested in is adjustable narrower bars, but I already changed the Aeroad to 370s. All of the climbs in the area require a bit of a drive, but are worth it. The best around are Blue Mountain and Dickey Ridge in the Front Royal area, Hamburg, Coxey, and Gambril near Frederick, and 211, Massanutten, and Tanner's Ridge near Sperryville and Luray. Skyline drive, of course, is one shallow climb after another. Tanner's is probably the most difficult due to a 15% average first mile.
I had an ultimate cf slx in M, which I rode for nearly two years before I accepted it was too big, sold for a good price and bought aeroad cf sl in S. Honestly apart from fitting me better I cant tell any difference.... my training rides are typically 30-33kph. So maybe not fast enough to really notice the difference. I do have a Speedmax for TT which is considerably faster! Id be happy with Ultimate CF SL with aero wheels :)
Do you know of any smart trainers that work with the canyon ultimate rim brake? I know wahoo kikr is incompatible but I was wondering about the tacx neo 2t.

Great review Travis. You made a lot of sense. I’m also in between 2 sizes. I’m 5’5”, 29.5” inseam, so I’m XS/XXS. Canyon suggest XXS, but all the measurements from my old bike on which I’d was really comfy are shouting XS at me?? I’m in the UK so I can get a flight over to canyon for about $60. Might be worth just going over to try both sizes. I’m also stuck between on whether to have the Ultimate or the Endurace? And Di2 or Etap? 👀🤔😁
I rented an Endurace for a week earlier this summer. It's a very different ride from the Ultimate. For those two it might be a simple question of do you race/segment hunt, or just ride for enjoyment. You can make the Endurace go fast like any other bike, but it's way more on the upright, soft ride side. Now Shimano vs. SRAM is a difficult decision.

Steve of Staffordshire My longest on it is maybe 4-5 hours. I rarely find time/reason to go beyond 5 on any bike. Dont worry, once you get the new bike you can spend just as much time considering what tires to run, what pressure, clothing choice, etc. 😉.
Yes, if it's the SLX frame. Officially they say 28mm is the max tire size, but I've seen a 30mm used with plenty of clearance still. The rim internal dimensions can make a difference on what the actual safe maximum is.

@@bigmango202 If youre just getting into things an Ultimate might be better for more adjustability. The ones with a lower groupset (e.g. 105) might also come with a regular stem and bars, which is good to be able to change as you find what works for you. I think fit is more important than most upgrades, but as you get used to riding more and get more fit your proper set up can change quite a bit. So get something that’s a good start and expect to change it a lot.

They say the difference between SL and SLX is higher grade carbon fiber--maybe 100g lighter but also stronger. I haven't tried any frames in SL, but suppose heavier riders would be more likely to feel a difference in frame flex vs the SLX.

@@ModraSmouha That depends on how far forward or back you like your seat. Their website has pretty detailed geometry/dimensions for each frame, so go by that. For your height I'd guess an XS would be best.
Question how tall are you?, I am having a bit of a struggle choosing which size to get. I am 6ft tall. I am leaning towards a size M but since the sizes differ from other Brands so I purchase a small because it ultimately fits like a medium in most brands?
This is the most common question! I’m 5’7. The Aeroad is a S, but with two more recent Canyons I went XS which fit a bit better. I agree their sizes seem to line up smaller than other brands.

In my case true, but because the Aeroad is S and Ultimate XS. As far as I can tell, my torso position ends up the same on them, so it's just my hands moving 2cm forward, rotating from the shoulder. Within the same size, the top tube and reach difference on an XS is only 2mm different between the two, seat tube angle .3deg, and the bar and stem dimensions are identical. I've heard comments about "climbing geometry" and things like that, but think that's just a perception between the two, rather than actual geometry.
Just Me No, I have them set up so the fundamental elements of the fit (saddle height, setback from pedals, torso angle) are as close to the same as possible and what I think are my optimal balance of power output and aero. I comfortably ride the drops on both bikes, so I’m not tempted to alter my entire fit just so my arms are not rotated 2cm more forward.

When I used their Perfect Positioning System (PPS) it suggested that I get the 2XS. I just want to make sure that I buy the perfect frame size for me. I also want to be able to ride the bike comfortably a little more upright (less aggressive). Any suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
@@allenglenbarrera21 If between sizes I think it makes sense to go for the smaller frame as long as you can still fit on it. It's helpful to know the general dimensions you'd like (top tube+stem, seat height, seat setback) and make sure you have some flexibility on either side of what you need. But why an Aeroad if you want an upright position?
I think the comfort difference is mostly while riding (bar tape, seat flex), but even then they're not too different. I definitely don't feel more or less tired, sore, etc. depending on which one I rode.

@@arlokkkk The Ultimate has the stock Canyon gel tape on it. I think it's worth experimenting with tape and how tightly you wrap it to see what feels best. The sensation of a thicker, more cushy bar vs. very thin and solid feeds a lot into the ride perception. Likewise for tires and at what pressure they're run. It makes more sense to me that a rider can feel "stiffness" or "softness," or feel more in control, from those things than from any minute differences between carbon frames. To your other question, most manufacturer websites have graphics showing how they take each measurement.

The speed difference does not come from the tube shapes it comes from the rider position stack being much lower on the Aeroad forcing you to a much smaller frontal surface. Most aero bikes are designed like this forcing the rider to a much more aggressive position. I find the Ultimate much more comfortable in absorbing road vibrations.
Within the same size that's true (Aeroad stack would be about 1cm smaller than Ultimate), but since I have a S and XS, the stack is actually smaller on the Ultimate. Do you also have both bikes?
@@travishunnicutt1332 I have an Ultimate and an XR4, the differences in stack are significant the Ultimate is super comfortable due to its vibration damping and more "relaxed" position. Next to rider position it's the wheels that make the next big difference (tires and depth) related to speed. I don't think the aero tube shaping brings anything significant to the table.

You have to admire the algorithm...Funny parallel to me but in reverse. I'm also a 2 Canyon owner. I got an Endurace (not Ultimate) CF SL 7.0 Disc in late 2018. My entry into the carbon bike world. It's the mechanical 105 groupset bike. I absolutely love it and have put over 11,000 miles on it. Just a few weeks ago I got the new Aeroad CF SL Disc 8.0 AF. It was a big purchase - I'm very fortunate to be able to have these two wonderful bikes. I'm very happy with both of them.
Even though the Aeroad is clearly the faster bike, I'm still getting used to how it behaves in various conditions i.e. I'm not at full confidence when riding the Aeroad yet. Contrast that with the Endurace, which is the slower bike but one I'm much more confident on, having ridden every inch of all my usual roads many times. Especially descents - I BOMB down descents on the Endurace without hesitation. The Aeroad's handling isn't second nature to me yet - and the 62mm deep wheels are sails in the wind.
The Aeroad clearly shines when it's fast on the flat. The difference is night and day over 20mph. Taking pulls on the front of the group ride is less daunting now 😂. The Aeroad climbs very well too. My local area has short punchy climbs less than 5 minutes, so the Aeroad is more than capable here. If I were to head into the mountains with 10+ minute steep climbs, the Endurace with its 32t cassette would be the bike of choice (Aeroad comes with a 28).
This is a VERY professional and well done review Travis. I thoroughly enjoyed your well thought out talking points, and with great delivery. You should be teaching courses to beginning actors on how to plant their feet. Most people can't do that. Cheers and happy, safe riding.
Brian Messemer thanks for the support. I do my best to keep the feet planted 😉. Great observations on the role comfort and familiarity have on speed. A truly more aerodynamic bike should perform at its best on a descent, but if you are more confident in handling or braking on another bike, it may end up being faster. A key point I hoped to get across in this video is that, for most of us, the actual differences between the bikes are small, so pick the one that feels better to ride.

Be warned: Do not buy a bike Canyon their customer service is the worst I have ever experienced from any company ever - bike arrived damaged and these guys will just try to low ball you if you do not accept their low ball offer customer service will ignore you!!! The difference is in the marketing, it is what CANYON (and others) attempt to make you believe that you need this bike for this and this bike for that. When will people get int their heads reviews are designed to make you buy, and that is the bottom line. I have a LOOK bike, apparently an inferior climbing bike in comparison to Canyon, yet I get to the top and ride my Alpen Brevits, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Tannheimertal (2018) all done with the LOOK bike. You do not need an expensive bike, you need the training and the legs. Job done!
These are the crucial points an objective review should cover when comparing an aero bike to a climbing bike. Great job!

I think your video is truly helpful as on paper I wouldn't know an Aeroad climbs faster than a frame built for climbing. Your video breaks stereotypes! Great work! Ps, I used to do crit at Hains Point or cruise around Gravelly Point when I lived in DC.
I’m glad you found it useful. The difference between the frames is so small I could just as well be wrong too on which is faster in certain conditions. If the Aeroad seemed 10s faster up a 20 minute 5% climb, a friendly breeze or lots of cars passing that day is worth probably 3x that much and could be the real reason for the differences. Haines Point though…a place we all love to hate!

Interesting to see you went from a Small Aeroad to the XS Ultimate for your second Canyon. I'm 68" with 30.5" inseam, so smack dab right in between a S & XS. May I ask your measurements, which I think will be valuable in deciding which way to go on a new Aeroad. I know our body types may be wildly different, but when you have to buy a bike online without proper sizing, getting help from the community is better than nothing. TIA Travis ...
My saddle height is roughly 70cm (bb ring to mid saddle), which is the only significant adjustment choice you get. I also have a Grizl in XS and if getting a new Aeroad would size down as well. I never feel too cramped on the smaller frames, but also spend a lot of time in drops compared to most riders, so maybe am using more available space. If the adjustment ranges of two bikes work with room on both ends, I would always pick the smaller frame since it's almost certainly faster. I would also prefer needing to get a slightly longer stem to perfect reach than deal with a long top tube then super short stem, which could make handling a bit odd.

The Canyon website only allows 2 sizing criteria for fitting a bike, height and inseam. @@giosal8822 67", 30-30.5 ish inseam, depending how snug to get! Personally I prefer to consider the needed bike measurements since two people with the same limbs might have vastly different cleat positions, heel drop, flexibility, etc., and end up with different ideals. You might be like me in that either one works fine and will have enough adjustability to make your fit work. Some people just have preferences for relatively more or less top tube and how it makes the bike feel. I'm in the prefer less camp, but not sure either is necessarily better if they both fit.

Very good review and highly appreciated i have a Canyon Endurace and was hesitating between Aeroad or ultimate i love the Aeroad shape(and i'm not a wight weenie i have realized long time ago that few hundreds grams don't make a difference unless you are riding a grand tour where 3-5 W over 5 hours a day for 3 weeks can have an impact) but wasn't sure if i shouldn't go for the Ultimate at 64 i think this might be my last bike change as i now tend to keep them longer (my Endurace is nearly 4 years old) and you convinced me to go for the Aeroad thanks

Great Video, I own Trek Domane SL6 which is endurance bike, I live in California which is very mountainous, I mostly do climbing around 2K to 4K elevation, endurance is really giving hard time climbing, so far I was going for ULTIMATE CF SLX and now after looking at this Video I'm tempting for Aero.. Majority of my ride goes towards climbing only, pls suggest buying Ultimate is good choice as in pandemic it is hard to find the find and We can't even look or feel Canyon before buy as it is online only..
Get what you can get and will fit you well. The difference between these two frames is very small, and at most is a few seconds on a higher speed climb (e.g. 5% gradient averaging 14+ mph for 20 minutes). I also very well could be wrong about the Aeroad being just slightly faster on an uphill shallow time trial since the difference is that small! Changing wheels, optimizing tire pressures, your own position, or getting more power by riding a few more hours every week are all more likely to show up as speed than small differences in frames.

But with climbing biked getting disc brakes and aero upgrades... the lines of separation are becoming more and more blurry...;)
Adam Kubiak I think integrated bar/stems are a nice placebo that make the rider give a few more w’s ;). The point I was hoping to make in this is that the frame differences are very small, and much smaller than the effects of wheel choice, tire, pressure, and maybe even clothing. The Aeroad is faster if climbing at higher speeds (20-25kph+), but otherwise the same. But speaking of PITA...disc brakes that almost always end up rubbing, and more so when standing and you need power the most!
Travis Hunnicutt right... there’s a lovely selection of high-end second hand aero bikes with rim brake now, that people are obsessing over getting discs or get their choices limited by manufacturers.
Hi Travis, could it be because of the crank length? I have a Speedmax CF 8.0 size S (as PPS suggested me) and I am now considering to buy Ultimate CF SL 8.0 Di2 Aero Disc. I am 172cm height and 80cm inseam and PPS suggests me with XS size, which has shorter crank (170cm) instead 172,5cm crank for size S Canyon. Maybe that's why you are still faster with Aeroad? It's still stock crank right for both bikes?

Great video. Thank you. I'm considering a Canyon. I currently have a Giant Defy Advanced Pro 1 (2016). Presumably its the Ultimate that'd better suit me, but I like the idea of being able to go that little bit faster. Do you have a suggestion for how I could determine if the style of the Aeroad would suit me? And have you reviewed the more current bikes?
aeroad is much lower on the front end. unless you are riding very aggressively on the defy, choosing the ultimate may be a wiser choice. no point choosing the aeroad and still retaining inches of stem spacers. you can fit the ultimate with a set of slightly deeper wheels to regain the aero loses.
Great video - one I keep coming back to while I'm waiting for my Ultimate to arrive even though I much prefer the looks and performance profile of the Aeroad (I was very lucky to find my size XL in the Ultimate so went for it) - my most important question is - how do they ride and what are their ride qualities? Which one feels nicer, more comfortable, is one better for short rides vs long rides, do you do many 100km+ rides, do you ride on perfect roads in Germany where they came from, or is there any difference at all? I've heard the Aeroad is a bit harsher, which makes sense, but seeing as though you ride both what are your thoughts? At the moment I think I'll update to the Aeroad next year, however I'll have the 30 day return policy and the new Aeroad's are coming soon...
Buying a bike these days sounds difficult. Not the paying part, but actually getting your hands on what you want. I ride them both quite a bit, with plenty of 100k+ rides on all sorts of terrain. The Ultimate may be slightly softer on bumpy terrain since the seat post has a bit more flex and the bar tape on mine is softer than what is on the Aeroad. I do tend to take the Ultimate on bumpier roads, but that's more because it has slightly more tire clearance and is the one I would more often put 28 or 30's on. The differences between frames, though, are not that big and are way less than what you would sense from changing wheels, tires, or tire pressures. The newer version of the Aeroad seems to blend features of both bikes as well.

It is a hell of a time to buy anything bicycle related - I'm one of the unlucky ones who bought their first bike and got into cycling right before COVID happened, so I've been unable to test ride any bikes or even get fitted since (I'm in Australia with very strict lockdown laws) so trying to buy my first "proper" road bike without that experience is a nightmare (and of course two years later I'm too impatient to wait until it's all over), not to mention there are no bikes available to buy anyway! But content like yours helps people like me greatly - we can only trust paid cycling publications so much - so I really appreciate it!
I'm have an Ultimate but I'm not an ultimate rider, i.e. although I raced (mostly last place) when I was younger; so the bottom line for my thinking is which do you like to ride better?
This was exactly the review I needed... except now I’ve flopped back the the Aeroad. I’ve been hovering over the “buy” button since they came back in stock last week. Did you have any initial problems with either bike when you received them?
The derailleur hanger (a part designed to break) was broken on the Aeroad when it came, so I told them and they mailed me another a couple days later. Order a spare anyways since they are proprietary to most bikes and good to have on hand if it breaks later on. The only other thing I've heard to watch out for with online-ordered bikes is to make sure the parts you ordered are what you got. If you see my Ultimate review video I talk about how the bar/stem that came on it was actually a size smaller than spec for the XS. So far I've been fine with that since I wanted to try narrower bars, but if, for example, it was a different crank size, cassette, wheel type, etc. it would be a different story.

I own the ultimate and have ridden my friends aeroad... i would have to disagree... the ultimate is much less stiff and more comfortable than the aeroad. I believe because your ultimate is a size smaller it threw off your comparison
Interesting. In what way do you think the Ultimate is less stiff? I find it very difficult to sense any millimeter or smaller differences in carbon frame flex when tires, pressure, wheel spoke flex, seat rails, and bearing play are all there and by design cushion the ride. I frequently change wheel sets between bikes, including using the original Ultimate wheels on the Aeroad and vice versa, which really helps single out where certain sensations are coming from.

jorgefgr I’m on the line between the two sizes. I had the Aeroad first, and though I can ride all day in the drops, my hands often sit a cm or 2 back from the hoods when fully relaxed, so I thought a shorter top tube in the xs would make sense. My saddle height is about 71.5cm.

This topic always invites spirited discussion. For the type of riding I do, rim brakes are the best choice. If I rode outside a lot in rain down long, twisty -15% gradients I'd probably feel the tradeoffs for disc brakes are worth it. But I don't. I keep giving disc brakes a try whenever I rent bikes, etc. since it seems the industry wants to go full disc, but they always rub to some degree. The sound of metal rubbing is lost watts, and probably quite a few. I also prefer the wider range of braking force I can apply on rims vs disc (i.e. discs can go from no slowing to skid with just a small lever movement). Rim brakes do the needed job without costing watts, so in my mind are superior. They're also much easier to maintain.
I strongly agree with your comments...rim brakes are perfect for where and how I ride...however, you are correct...it looks like more and more manufacturers will only offer disk brakes...too bad.

I recommend using bike dimensions (top tube, seat height, etc.) to select your bike since flexibility, preferences, cleat position, and similar things can make a big difference when frames only differ by 1-2cm each. That said, I'm a fan of erring on the smaller sizes for frames. Good luck!

The XXS, I believe, might come with shorter cranks (165), a shorter stem (80), and narrower bars (370), so those aspects are worth considering more than the basic frame size. This Ultimate has the 370mmx80mm bars actually meant for the XXS. I like them, but many people would find them very narrow.
Hi Travis. Thank you for the video. Unfortunately when I came across it, I had already ordered my Aeroad on size SMALL. I’m 5’4 and it just didn’t feel right. Fortunately I was able to exchange it for a XS. Based on the fact that my previous bike was S I can now say that Canyon bikes run large. Either downside or consult a professional fitter and he will advise based on the measurements. Thank you again
Jorge Lara I agree the sizes dont necessarily match with who is “large” and “small” in the cycling world, and people shouldnt be deterred from picking XS or XXS just based on that label.

J Nijkamp You would probably be ok on either size, but might as well look into the smaller one. The biggest hard issue would be seat height, so just make sure your current seat height is well within the range of the XS. The seat tube on Aeroads is long, so it’s a big range, but theres not much you could do if that ended up being too low for you. Good luck with your new bike hunt!

@@john2lhotalify For most of the climbs I have access to, I think it's simply faster. I don't have enough comparison on 10%+, but definitely at things like 5-6% they're almost even, but with a slight nod to the Aeroad. The better someone is at climbing, the more I'd expect that is true. Willie Smit did a good video showing his heavier TT bike was faster than an Aeroad even on a 6% hill and he was only doing 4.5w/kg. Thanks for this comparison. I was attracted to the Ultimate as a fast bike that will fit some pretty large tires for light gravel riding (i.e., it'll take 32s), but I understand the Aeroad has the same tire clearance. Can you verify? Thanks!
On mine the Ultimate takes a few mm wider, but these are both rim brake versions. I've used 30s on the Ultimate (rated for 28) and even confirmed they narrowly fit the Aeroad (rated 25) with no rubbing. The newest ones are all disc and should fit wider than either of mine. Between the two it makes sense the Aeroad would require smaller tires since the seatpost is shaped around the wheel. In spite of what is listed (and danger to warranty), both probably would fit 32s, if not larger.
Was thinking of getting an Ultimate but i'm inbetween sizes of Small and XS. Have only tested an Endurace in small and although the size was ok, i did feel a tiny bit stretched out. The XS geometry just looks too small going by the numbers.

If you had to pick one today, which one would you pick and why?
From the model years I have, I've come to favor the ultimate since it's just a bit easier to travel with, maintain, etc. and handles better. The handling is most likely due more to size than how the frames are made. Picking between current model years would be difficult. The width adjustable handlebars originally on the Aeroad are appealing to me, but I think they also added those to Ultimates now.
That was uphill ofcourse, what about flats? Does the difference get much higher, or still same ballpark?

I think most differences in ride feel come from things like tires, pressure, wheels, etc. so since I swap wheels on bikes depending on the ride, it changes the main feel quite a bit. My Ultimate is a size smaller, so the 2cm shorter top tube is noticeable and I think I can handle the smaller bike better. I think I mentioned in the video that I tend to get a lot of downhill PR’s on the Ultimate, even though supposedly the Aeroad is more aerodynamic. I attribute most of that to feeling more confident on the Ultimate at high speed, so brake less and tuck more.

Looking at these models today. Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero 5199 €, Aeroad CF SLX 8 Disc Di2 6749 €. Both with Ultegra di2 and DT Swiss cf wheels. The Ultimate is about 200 g lighter. I don't get the price difference of 1550 €. Seems way too much.
That is a big difference. The names mean the Aeroad should have a higher grade carbon. Having never ridden anything but their SLX frames, I'm not sure I could tell the difference, but maybe there is one. Good luck selecting!

Great review. I am in the market and trying to deicde to with the aeroad or ultimate. I live in a mostly flat area with a few hills to climb up. I am thinking potentially the aeroad would suit me best but I also want to do some fair weather 30min commuting to work and worry that it would be too uncomfortable to ride with a small back pack. What would you recommend?
I don’t know about commuting on either bike, especially if you’ll end up locking (piling) it along with a bunch of other bikes. Isn’t that what steel frames are for? But if you insist, I dont see much comfort or ride difference between them, and what I do notice I think comes from the wheels, tires, saddle, and bar tape-all things you can change.

Of course. If someone enjoys the sport, why not enjoy it with the best equipment they can? There are plenty of unskilled drivers in really high performance cars, etc.

The Aeroad is a S. I’m 5’7 and use a saddle height of around 27.5 inches. The S works for me but I would go XS if getting new today.

I have experienced myself riding two bikes but from different brands. A lightweight and an aero bike on the same route (short 50km). I did the same route a few, like 2 minutes quicker and with a higher speed average. But I thought maybe it was because of the difference in brands

I often forget which bike I’m on while riding, so that’s to say I don’t sense or measure much difference. If I change wheels or tires on them, sure I feel and can measure speed differences, but I don’t think too much comes from just the frame. Probably what helmet you wear determines more watts. I’d get the one that looks nicer and fits well first.
The difference is the bottle cages. Those cages on the Aerod are way better. Try tests again with the cages swapped. :-D

I have the ultimate cf slx 2018 Campagnolo Super Record Mechanical with Bora one 35 clinchers and the Ultimate cf slx in the previous version 2014 in Dura Ace. The newer version is definitely faster. I would say around 7% faster on all my Strava routes. My main point though is that you’re comparing apples and pears. Different wheels, tyres, saddles. These all make a difference.
Interesting that you think the newer Ultimate is that much better than a 2014 version. One point I wanted to convey in this video is that these two frames aren't terribly far from each other, so no need to really fret over which one to get. I agree that wheels and tires in particular have a huge affect on ride quality, but they are also very commonly swapped and replaced, leaving the real variable at the frame level.

I’ve generally found their size recommending tools to be good, and more helpful if you know at least some key bike dimensions. Like if between two sizes, probably better to opt for the one where your saddle height isn’t at an end of the available range. Otherwise, if really on the fence I personally prefer a smaller frame. Yes, I’d go XS Aeroad if replacing. My fit is within the S range too, but I prefer the less head tube, shorter top tube route to get there. You’re about the same size as me.

No gains in terms of aero when climbing. It is just you that make the difference. Are you using the same components? waxing of your chain, is it the same? handle bars. bottom brackets are they the same? Chain too. to have a full effect, it must be above a kilo. 350g is nothing.
Yes, basically every component is the same between these two bikes (groupsets, lubes), including even the bar/stem combo since I changed the Aeroad's for the narrower type that came with the Ultimate. Aerodynamics are still very important on most things people call climbs, though the most determinant factors in aero are how the rider is positioned and what they are wearing. One of the biggest variables I have found with these bikes is in which wheels/tires I use, with deeper and slightly wider rims needing fewer watts up faster climbs (5%) than shallower/narrower.
So are you going sell both and get a new Aeroroad? Also, speaking of climbing, where are some decent climbs near the DMV?
I have no plans to sell either and don't see how the new Aeroad would be a meaningful upgrade. The main thing I would have been interested in is adjustable narrower bars, but I already changed the Aeroad to 370s. All of the climbs in the area require a bit of a drive, but are worth it. The best around are Blue Mountain and Dickey Ridge in the Front Royal area, Hamburg, Coxey, and Gambril near Frederick, and 211, Massanutten, and Tanner's Ridge near Sperryville and Luray. Skyline drive, of course, is one shallow climb after another. Tanner's is probably the most difficult due to a 15% average first mile.

I had an ultimate cf slx in M, which I rode for nearly two years before I accepted it was too big, sold for a good price and bought aeroad cf sl in S. Honestly apart from fitting me better I cant tell any difference.... my training rides are typically 30-33kph. So maybe not fast enough to really notice the difference. I do have a Speedmax for TT which is considerably faster!

I rented an Endurace for a week earlier this summer. It's a very different ride from the Ultimate. For those two it might be a simple question of do you race/segment hunt, or just ride for enjoyment. You can make the Endurace go fast like any other bike, but it's way more on the upright, soft ride side. Now Shimano vs. SRAM is a difficult decision.

Steve of Staffordshire My longest on it is maybe 4-5 hours. I rarely find time/reason to go beyond 5 on any bike. Dont worry, once you get the new bike you can spend just as much time considering what tires to run, what pressure, clothing choice, etc. 😉.

Yes, if it's the SLX frame. Officially they say 28mm is the max tire size, but I've seen a 30mm used with plenty of clearance still. The rim internal dimensions can make a difference on what the actual safe maximum is.
What about the gear range on the bikes? Ultimate has better climbing gears doesn’t it?
The standard groupsets are the same, so no difference in gearing
I'm torn between the basic disc brake aeroad or the ultimate disc 8.0
Flip a coin or get both? The frames do not ride or fit too differently, so you should be able to decide based on groupsets or wheels.

@@bigmango202 If youre just getting into things an Ultimate might be better for more adjustability. The ones with a lower groupset (e.g. 105) might also come with a regular stem and bars, which is good to be able to change as you find what works for you. I think fit is more important than most upgrades, but as you get used to riding more and get more fit your proper set up can change quite a bit. So get something that’s a good start and expect to change it a lot.

They say the difference between SL and SLX is higher grade carbon fiber--maybe 100g lighter but also stronger. I haven't tried any frames in SL, but suppose heavier riders would be more likely to feel a difference in frame flex vs the SLX.

@@ModraSmouha That depends on how far forward or back you like your seat. Their website has pretty detailed geometry/dimensions for each frame, so go by that. For your height I'd guess an XS would be best.

Question how tall are you?, I am having a bit of a struggle choosing which size to get. I am 6ft tall. I am leaning towards a size M but since the sizes differ from other Brands so I purchase a small because it ultimately fits like a medium in most brands?
This is the most common question! I’m 5’7. The Aeroad is a S, but with two more recent Canyons I went XS which fit a bit better. I agree their sizes seem to line up smaller than other brands.

You are more stretched out on the Aeroad with the longer stem and reach though.
In my case true, but because the Aeroad is S and Ultimate XS. As far as I can tell, my torso position ends up the same on them, so it's just my hands moving 2cm forward, rotating from the shoulder. Within the same size, the top tube and reach difference on an XS is only 2mm different between the two, seat tube angle .3deg, and the bar and stem dimensions are identical. I've heard comments about "climbing geometry" and things like that, but think that's just a perception between the two, rather than actual geometry.
Have you tried moving the saddle forward on the Aeroad?
Just Me No, I have them set up so the fundamental elements of the fit (saddle height, setback from pedals, torso angle) are as close to the same as possible and what I think are my optimal balance of power output and aero. I comfortably ride the drops on both bikes, so I’m not tempted to alter my entire fit just so my arms are not rotated 2cm more forward.

Travis Hunnicutt hi Travis I’m 5’5 with 30in in seam. I’m thinking of getting an Aeroad CF SL 8.0 di2 and was wondering wether I should get an XS or 2XS. When I used their Perfect Positioning System (PPS) it suggested that I get the 2XS. I just want to make sure that I buy the perfect frame size for me. I also want to be able to ride the bike comfortably a little more upright (less aggressive). Any suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated.

It's helpful to know the general dimensions you'd like (top tube+stem, seat height, seat setback) and make sure you have some flexibility on either side of what you need. But why an Aeroad if you want an upright position?

I think the comfort difference is mostly while riding (bar tape, seat flex), but even then they're not too different. I definitely don't feel more or less tired, sore, etc. depending on which one I rode.

@@arlokkkk The Ultimate has the stock Canyon gel tape on it. I think it's worth experimenting with tape and how tightly you wrap it to see what feels best. The sensation of a thicker, more cushy bar vs. very thin and solid feeds a lot into the ride perception. Likewise for tires and at what pressure they're run. It makes more sense to me that a rider can feel "stiffness" or "softness," or feel more in control, from those things than from any minute differences between carbon frames. To your other question, most manufacturer websites have graphics showing how they take each measurement.

The speed difference does not come from the tube shapes it comes from the rider position stack being much lower on the Aeroad forcing you to a much smaller frontal surface. Most aero bikes are designed like this forcing the rider to a much more aggressive position. I find the Ultimate much more comfortable in absorbing road vibrations.
Within the same size that's true (Aeroad stack would be about 1cm smaller than Ultimate), but since I have a S and XS, the stack is actually smaller on the Ultimate. Do you also have both bikes?
@@travishunnicutt1332 I have an Ultimate and an XR4, the differences in stack are significant the Ultimate is super comfortable due to its vibration damping and more "relaxed" position. Next to rider position it's the wheels that make the next big difference (tires and depth) related to speed. I don't think the aero tube shaping brings anything significant to the table.
Can 28mm wide tires fit this bike?
28 is probably the safe max for the Aeroad, 30 for the Ultimate. The current versions in disc brakes all can run even larger.
