  • Episode 1 in our Dead Mall series. Towne Square was built in the early-mid 1980's in downtown Parkersburg in response to both the Grand Central Mall opening in neighboring Vienna in 1973 and to the city's Urban Renewal effort. It originally consisted of a restaurant, several retail spaces, a 3-screen movie theatre, parking structure, apartment tower, and office complex. The theatre was expanded to 6 screens. The retail and restaurant portions were never very successful and the mall closed sometime between 2000 and 2003. It has since been converted to the Judge Donald F. Black Courthouse Annex although not all sections have been re-purposed.

My dad and I used to go to the movies there every weekend. I remember being obsessed with Tombstone and went like 4 times. It started out pretty clean, but by the time they began the shut down process it was getting pretty gritty

This is awesome. LOL, I am originally from Parkersburg. I don't remember anything from Towne Square except for the theater. Saw so many movies there. White men can't jump, Land before time, Fern gully, Rocky 5. Man, I loved that place.

a good place to get depressive... Look at the rate of marriages, the number of people moving since 1970, landlords who can kick out people out after 5 days and a police advertise with We watch you.. /Abandonned industries , moving malls like the k mart in south. The only option is run, run, run away.. This is no town to stay. Good video!

At the time the county purchased Town Square...there was only one law office inside. Town Square was built as a project of the city of Parkersburg Urban Renewal project. Larry Morehead was the developer. Over the course of time, there was a theater inside....a jewelry store ...a card shop....law offices.....and Diana's Restaurant (owned by Napolis folks). The parking garage and the Apartment complex were largely a success..but the retail space never was. The county only purchased the mall portion ....and re located offices of Prosecuting Attorney...Family Law Judges, Sheriffs Tax Office, public meeting rooms, and Assessors Offices. There area where the Public Defender offices are now...used to be a parking level and a bank drive through. It was later closed in and offices rented out.

I saw two movies in the theater, not a good experience, but admission was like one or two dollars. The last one I went to there was about a week before the closing of the theater was announced. I think the movie I saw was "Fight Club."

Yeah, and for the life of me I can't remember what it looked like. It's only the mall and the office part that's been changed, though. The apartments, elevator, offices near the apartments, and the parking garage are all the same.

It's kind of sad that Town Square never took off. I saw a few movies there before I moved out of state. I think I remember there being a restaurant there, as well as a candy (chocolate) shop.
