My Choice 774 - Franco Corelli, Fenesta che Lucive

This is a very sad Neapolitan song. "Fenesta che Lucive", (A Window that shines), which was composed in the 1820's and it is said to belong to Vincenzo Bellini because the melody is taken from his Opera Sonnambula. Includes captions in English.
The song a rather morbid love story: a young man learns that his sweetheart no longer awaits him at the "shining window" of her residence because she now "sleeps with death"; he then resigns himself to walks through the cemetery, waiting to die to be reunited with her.
The melody is lovely in its soaring sadness, in its sense of deep sorrow. It is dramatic and richly romantic conveying the kind of powerful emotions and distinctive melodic character that one might hear in a mid-nineteenth century aria from a tragic opera by a master.
Those partial toward Italian folk and love songs will find Fenesta che lucive a powerfully moving listening experience.
