    I am currently taking this subject at my university and my professor didn't bother to explain what linear algebra is for, she just went on teaching matrices immediately. Watching that milk and OJ example and then the plane intersections made me realize how much I will miss out if I just listened to my professor and don't watch videos like these. Thank you!

    Exercise 0.3 Find the equation of the line obtained by reflecting the line 2x+ 3y = 6 in the
    line y = x . Describe the relationship between the slopes of the original and the reflected lines.
    Exercise 0.4 Find the equation of the line obtained by rotating the line 2x + 3y = 6 ninety degrees anticlockwise about the origin. Describe the relationship between the slopes of the original and the rotated lines.

    I’m taking Linear Algebra next semester. If both a line and plane can yield infinite many solutions, wouldn’t the infinity describing the plane be greater than the infinity describing the line????? Some infinities are bigger than others?

    • @Basilisk2077
      @Basilisk2077 4 года назад

      Yes, because a plain is a 3D object, right?
      Some infinities are definitely infinitely bigger than others, although it does self-contradict it’s self because nothing is bigger than infinity - it’s just a concept for the purpose of mathematics.
      But a plain extends beyond the realm of 2d, so it is infinite two realms? Two infinites are better than one. My brain hurts.

    @stevedahlberg8680 2 года назад

    I hate to say it but I'm stymied on the steps it takes to get to the answer in the comprehension question. I've tried it several different ways but I always end up with a zero in each line in a different spot and it seems to preclude doing anything further.
    My guess is that I am doing some row operations that aren't legal but I checked it over and over and they all seem to be multiplying a row by something or adding and subtracting them in some way. I tried to work backwards from the answer and that didn't help either.

    • @stevedahlberg8680
      @stevedahlberg8680 2 года назад

      For example if I do R2-R3 to get new 2nd row, then 2R1+R2 to get new 1st row, then I've got:
      0 5 2 16
      -2 3 0 6
      4 0 5 2
      Now what?

      Honestly I don't think you are learning linear algebra, that is done after calculus. You are probably learning how to solve two equations with two unknowns, that sort of thing. That's learned in high school algebra. I wouldn't worry about it.

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  5 лет назад +4

      a vector has finite magnitude and specific direction, curves don't have a specific direction as they curve, and lines don't have magnitude as they extend infinitely in both directions, so they are totally different mathematical constructs.
