Add to that the anxiety I get if someone brings attention to any of the aforementioned behaviours; any sort of confrontation stemming from this only serves to exacerbate the anxiety. @James Sunderland its different for everyone and there's so much dimension to the experience that i can't memorize. ill get into past me first. for me, i never knew i was autistic for a long time, just felt like i was the weird one no one liked and felt angry at others for not accepting me ever since i was a little child, but eventually also angry with myself for being intolerable. i had to do kindergarten twice and still remember the great shame and loneliness i felt when i found out i was doing kindergarten again. i constantly felt i was more stupid compared to the rest but still had a childlike ego at the same time? just with the awareness that people belittle me and that im the "stupid" one in the crowd. i always lashed out against teachers because i was constantly stressed with the environment i was in, and my teachers didn't understand me because they didn't even have a diagnosis to go off of. (they probably would've still had impatience and used methods that didn't work but would've kept note of autism). i lashed out against other students too, because many made fun of my irritability, my intellect, my interests, my understanding of certain social ques, and my stimming behaviours, which caused me to also falsely perceive some people's actions as something to belittle me which got me in trouble a lot as i "lied" a lot (it was my truth) due to my assumption that people had hurtful intentions. i had loud meltdowns and stormed out of a lot of situations (consciously choosing flight when my first instinct was fight due to recognized patterns that i got in trouble for fight) which people also made fun of me for. that includes the precious golden children who "could never do anything wrong". i tried not to show fear but usually my meltdowns came from fear of getting into trouble with parents or teachers due to trauma. i hid many of my behaviours and traits over time because people shamed me for them, including my family, which became subconscious. some choices are conscious which is why it's exhausting, but it's also subconscious because your brain associates those traits and behaviours with the trauma you received from others when showing them, which is why unmasking is so difficult. here's a conscious and subconscious example. concious: actively choosing not to share my interest in my little pony in grade 6 and suppressing to the point of it not being special to me anymore because people judged for liking something so "childlike", not plugging my ears to loud sounds because it was seen as impolite, hiding anxiety and fears from people because they'll think it's stupid, pretending i know something so im not viewed as stupid. subconscious: speaking while drained because going non-verbal as someone who is capable of speaking is simply viewed as inconvenient, not stimming (especially vocal stims) because stims are viewed as disruptive, making eye contact (this became conscious after isolation though), and there's probably more but since decisions are not conscious i usually have to actually do research to realize subconscious things in my mind. in the present, i now know im autistic. i have pride in special interests, i stim unapologetically, and i make less eye contact. im aware of my sensory issues being sensory issues and i now go to a more accepting school. sensory issues still suck, i struggle with dragging carpet noises which feels like grating in the ears and with food textures which makes me an unhealthy eater. i still struggle with anxiety. statistics show over half of diagnosed autistic people also have anxiety. statistics also show that the second most common unnatural (unnatural is the key word) cause of death is s^icide, the first being heart failure. so it is hard to be autistic than it is to be not, and sometimes i feel like an imposter because im not like a lot of other autistic people since i also have adhd that sometimes contradicts certain traits of autism.
How nice. I became a tour guide years ago and had to figure this kind of thing out on my own even though I was self-conscious about how to project myself.

I'm a massive introvert, and a lot of my quiet confidence came from learning to be verbally assertive / straightforward about how I feel. Like turning down a party invite / or drinking night, with: "It's not really my venue, but the invite means a lot!"... "I'm a nerd, drinking isn't really my average night out. But hope you guys have an awesome time! I'll be with you in spirit ;D" My younger self used to just go with the flow, and then feel uncomfortable, out of place, resentful about not being upfront. P.s I mean this purely artistically, no homo etc, you both are really good looking and a cute couple!

Grew up in a militaristic upbringing so I even felt shy trying to dance alone in my room growing up. I’d just feel stupid and go back to studying. I was only taught to waltz 💀 and even then I stepped on girl’s feet at homecoming.
