Warner Bros. launch a spin-off of the Joker and Harley Quinn.
Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, directors and executive producers of the hit NBC drama This Is Us and who also wrote and helmed the 2011 film Crazy, Stupid, Love, are entering the DC cinematic universe at Warner Bros.
The duo are in final negotiations to pen and helm an untitled movie project centering on Batman villains Joker and Harley Quinn.
Jared Leto and Margot Robbie are due to reprise their roles as the villains, among the most popular characters in the DC pantheon and which they first portrayed in 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Insiders say that the plan is for this feature to go after the studio makes a sequel to Suicide Squad. The latter is on the development fast-track and out to directors. But the Joker and Harley Quinn movie is also moving fast as Warners has to contend with actors' holding agreements, say sources.
The film is described as a “criminal love story,” according to one source, featuring the two murdering maniacs who are cornerstones in the Batman mythos.
Additionally, the project falls within Warners' main line of movies based on their DC properties. That includes the current pics released and in production that feature Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, among other characters who collectively form the Justice League.
Warner Bros. is simultaneously beginning to develop a line of DC-related films that will fall outside the established cinematic universe which sees actors and storylines threaded through multiple movies.
The new line, or possibly label, will allow for the making of movies that will stand apart and separate from those big-budget tentpoles.
And, in a move showing how popular the character is, a Joker solo movie is being developed as a potential directing vehicle for The Hangover filmmaker Todd Phillips. It is intended to star an actor other than Leto. (Requa and Ficarra's Joker/Quinn project is further along in development than Phillips' Joker project, at least at this stage, according to one source.)
This strategy will distinguish Warners’ superhero movies from those of competitors, namely Disney, which has a highly interconnected Marvel universe of films as well as Star Wars. The latter has the main saga, first begun by creator George Lucas decades ago, and is now making stand-alone outings that are, at least at this stage, intended to fill in backstory for the main and ongoing story.
Warner Bros. may not be expanding its universe as much as doubling down on the voracious appetite audiences seem to have for these characters at this point in time.
Ficarra and Requa previously wrote and directed I Love You Phillip Morris (2009) and followed that up with the Crazy, Stupid, Love, which starred Steve Carell, Ryan Goslin and Emma Stone. The duo worked with Robbie when they wrote and directed the 2015 heist movie Focus and the 2016 war comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
Ficarra and Requa also exec produce and direct episodes of This is Us, NBC’s hit tearjerker that is up for nine Emmy Awards next month.
The pair are repped by CAA and McKuin Frankel.

It wasn't about direction, it was about the edit. His story was omitted from the film. He only had pointless and terribly edited scenes a little bit more extended like the nightclub scene that highlighted his controversial appearance.
I totally agree. I remember watching 'Assault on Arkham Asylum' which I'm assuming was the base material for the 'Suicide Squad' script, and I remember Mark Hamill's Joker in that movie having a much bigger impact to the plot and movie as a whole, despite his limited scenes.

I feel so bad for Jared. He really had huge standards to live up to with heath and took on the role KNOWING he would get some heath Stan’s just immediately dragging him down. All his good scenes were cut and he was seen as a bad clown played by Jim carrey. He’s a good actor, but if they actually put him in the movie more and everyone didn’t just hate him because he wasn’t heath, he would be way more liked. Heath will always be THE JOKER but Jared still did an excellent job and a completely different take on the joker which is seen because costume etc.

Even his laugh is stale and uninspired (it sounds more like a door opening than the Joker’s maniacal cackling). Ledger documentaries talk about how he found the character. This one is all about clothes and tattoos.

Though his aesthetic did not match up with the classic iteration, Ledger's version of the character actually matched up with the psychology of the Joker: a demented clown philosopher who wants nothing else but to make Batman break his one rule to prove that all men are corruptible toward evil or insanity. Leto's version is meant to be a sexualized version of a character who's above such things.

Well, first off.
This joker and the events of these movies are derivative of the original events that take place in the comics.
It's been hinted that this joker is a "spiritual successor" of the original redhood Joker that we all know and love (not heath ledgers).
It's even suggested that the robin from this universe in fact* is this new joker. So, from a lore stand point. That creative leap wasn't necessarily, a leap. Rather, an entirely different strain of events all together.
With that said, this movie is shit. Preteen pandering, vapid garbage meant to stimulate fashion trends and naive concepts of die hard romanticism. Let's not forget the explosion garnish added for effect. You're not wrong for hating it. It just sucks. It wasn't meant for anyone over the age of 15.
But, let's make one thing clear. In the comic book realm. There is NO one version of anyone. It's all based in different dimensions. So much so that they number them to keep track of them. DC and MARVEL are both guilty of this. It's a fact of life, and what gives these writers the ability to tear great things new assholes.

Soy Gato Joaquin Phoenix just raised the bar. No cringe, no cheap effects, no over the top stunts. Just pure character, rich writing and a team of people who ALL brought their A game. Joker 2019 was a low budget movie and yet....
I can’t say it’s all Leto’s fault though, he certainly played a role in this downfall but I also blame the writing and the costume design. He doesn’t look or seem like THE Joker, he’s just some pimp inspired by The Joker.

I actually like that Joker a lot. Lots of people hate it because it's so different from the previous (that one was brilliant). The one from the Dark knight was the anarchist Joker. The one in Suicide Squad is the psychopath one. They are just veru different, and Jared Leto's one is also very close to many Batman's comics. I thought that he was pretty close to the Joker in the Killing Joke comics as well as Death of the Family comics. The kind of Joker that cut off his face, pinned it to a wall, watch it decompose, then tied it back to his face. I do recognize thou that the relationship with Harley Quinn in this movie is not portrayed as it should be (Joker simply uses and abuses Harley, while she is deeply in love with him).

Jared did an amazing job, is not his fault that the director made stupid desicion to cut off a lot of scenes
and, for all the people who is comparing the Jokers, The one from the Dark knight was the anarchist Joker. The one in Suicide Squad is the psychopath one. They are just very different, and Jared Leto's one is also very close to many Batman's comics.

None of them are fitting. All too obvious and on the nose, feels like a corporate studio pandering to some group and not them creating an adaption of a comic book character.

Yeah, that facial tattoo is the most egregious one. I actually like all the other tattoos though. The ones on his torso can easily get covered up in Joker’s more public and less private/intimate scenes.

Jared put his all when he took on the character of joker. You can honestly really tell, especially in all his interviews and also in the fact that his real personality was altered a bit due to how deep he went on playing this character. Whether you hated or loved Jared's portrayal of the joker; he still did everything he could to become THE JOKER, that's all you can really ask from an actor. I love you Jared!
