Portal is what all video games should be

- I’m throwing my hat into the ring. I’ve talked about cartoons and shows and movies. I’ve even talked about a licensed Xbox game from my childhood. But I haven’t gone in depth about what aspect I like and dislike about video games. Portal is my favorite video game series of all time and it is the perfect example of the things I love in video games… and the things I don’t

It was infuriating to me as a child, when someone could not move and look at the same time. Strange how we just grew up knowing how to use a controller.
Fr
I'm a primarily pc/laptop gamer, so I never really figured out how to look around while moving with a controller. I had a Wii, but that doesn't have a controller either. My dad had a PS 3 but I guess none of the games I played the most really required a lot of precision? Now, when I'd go to my friends' place and play Halo 2 split screen... Well, that definitely became a pretty big problem. I still dunno how controller players do it. I admire you, and slightly envy you.
I've thought about it for a long time how strange it is that older generations don't know how to figure out technology.
I think a lot of people that grew up with technology actually learned the skills to then learn how to use technology. Not sure how to phrase it but I mean something as simple as figuring out what buttons do what on a device. When I get a new game or device I'm not familiar with, I try different buttons, read the instructions, etc. Meanwhile my mom presses the power Button and then still doesn't know how to change the TV input to the right option while also not even bothering to try and figure it out.
Like all their processing skills disappear when it comes to technology. How were they reading those big ass maps when traveling somewhere new but can't determine how to plug the hdmi cord in where it says hdmi or jump and move at the same time 😭
I never grew up playing a ton of video games, so when I was forced to play them, bored older brother, the controllers were always really confusing to me, and I'd always be shit at controlling them. Years later, I got my own system, and just, idk, figured it out to a point that it's just instincts. Now, whenever I show a friend who isn't that into games a game, I always have to take a deep breath and remember how difficult it was for me as a kid. I think using controllers is really a muscle memory thing and has a pretty steep learning curve.
bold of you to call turret murder fratricidal, but fail to mention how killing the companion cube gives you the achievement “fratricide.” in all seriousness, great video! crazy how sequelitis and game theory can be used as references in a video essay- super hilarious!
Or the achievement for getting ALL the cameras off the walls in the testing chambers. It said ALL and it means it, DLC and the extra bits.
@@BlackMoonHowls I'm pretty sure that's untrue seeing as I got that in only the main game. You probably missed a camera... uhh... but don't quote me on that if I'm just misremembering...
The fact that you called the deadly neurotoxin "the zaza" is hilarious.

The blue core's purpose was to spout nonsense to keep her mind distracted; The things it says have no purpose or prompt and fits the exact description GLaDOS gives of Wheatley's purpose as a Core in Portal 2.
The blue core's purpose was to list the recipe GlaDOS would need to make the cake.
@@DefyReality-ll2cg what cake?
So is the blue core some sort of a replica of Wheatley, then? They have different voices and personalities, PotatOS even calls attention to how she knows Wheatley by his voice. So they aren't the same, but have the same purpose? Maybe its a further fine-tuned version of Wheatley.
It's called the "Intelligence Core" (but the subtitles refer to it as the "Crazy Core"). After it's destroyed, her insults seem to get a bit dumber:
"I have your brain scanned and permanently backed up in case something terrible happens to you, which it's just about to. Don't believe me? Here, I'll put you on: _[Hellooo!]_ That's you! That's how dumb you sound." (And then she says she deleted it a minute or two later because we won't "stop squirming and die like an adult ".)
She also doesn't make any references to cake in Portal 2.
With all this in mind, I think it's safe to say that the Intelligence Core held at least _some_ of her knowledge.
i love how elegantly and interestingly you describe each chamber, id rather watch this video than a how-to to play the game, it just makes so much more sense
Look i cant make you like stray, but that last puzzle when you just lie down - and you dont have to watch the whole animation but you can - that made me cry
I’m beyond surprised this doesn’t have more views???? It’s amazing! I can’t wait for you to talk about the next game.
I personally am a big fan of well done cutscenes. The 2D animated ones in the persona series are all very fun and feel like a reward for completing a challenge. But i do agree that they're very much overused in games at the moment.
Worse than cutscenes are the characters just standing and talking without moving, like please if you're gonna make me sit here and do nothing at least make it fun to look at (i am looking at you genshin, give me a skip button and I'll start playing again).
I only ever played up to the "impossible" level of Portal, on someone else's laptop at a family gathering when i was 6 or 7, so didn't really find any of the story. I was very slow at moving and looking as i wasn't used to pc gaming (i had a DS) but had great fun solving the small puzzels. Glad to finally know what the plot is finally lmao
Can’t wait for the second video! I always enjoyed portal 1 just a tad more. Mostly because of the music, glad you talked about it
I love both games dearly, but there's so many golden lines in Portal 2, like the Lemon rant alone scooches P2 above the first for me. Also the gels were really fun, and especially all the little sounds ques everything had and how they would add to the background music like in Breath of the Wild! Its all just so awesome! I'll always hold the first in a special place in my heart, though.
From someone who mainly plays games like animal crossing (and stuff like that) this video made me get portal for the first time and I love it so much
Also this video needs more views it’s so good
I’m so glad to have found your total drama videos because this is such a good channel. I don’t even usually like longer videos but these are so appealing to me; the topics that get brought up are never brushed over, and you ramble on in the same opinionated and in-depth way that I would, even if it’s wildly off-topic. I really sense the genuine love you have for the things you talk about. On another note, I feel a really similar way as you about video games. I haven’t played Stray, but I immediately thought it seemed incredibly overrated, and there are quite a lot of acclaimed games that I think are comparable in terms of lacking fun gameplay. My theory is that these games get so much praise because there is literally nothing about them to object to lol. (I also played Portal for the first time a couple months ago and it’s amazing)
I hope he makes a portal 2 video in my lifetime
This made me wanna play portal again. Looking forwards to your portal 2 video!
AMAZING video dude, this came out fantastic
Holy fuck, Salty is a BHUltra fan???? Iconic.
*wow* it's SaltyDKDan, from the hit YouTubing channel... SaltyDKdan.
Crazy.
You salty little freak.
My older sister LOVED Portal, she had a potato and companion cube plushies and a turret figurine, but most importantly, we would sing “Still Alive” together constantly! Fond memories
Also, I was thinking about this video two weeks ago, and it inspired me play portal and beat it the first time in like, god maybe 5 or 6 years??? I vaguely remember being a little tot and freaking out at GLAaDOs' bossfight on my mom's computer, and never actually beating it. I don't really remember if I played through the whole game before that or just skipped right to the end. Either way, I loved experiencing it after so long!
I also played Portal 2 for the real first time about a week ago, and, of course, I LOVED it! I've played it twice now, going for a third later! I can't wait for your retrospective on it. The lemon rant is ingraned in my head.
this video is my new hyperfixation I’ve watched it 3 times in the past two days
Your point about tlou2 really reminded me of critisms of Quantic Dream/David Cage games, specifically this one I saw that was like "it seems like he's going into the game creation process thinking "how can this story elevate video games as a medium?" rather than "how can the medium of video games elevate this story?""
ive never been more excited for a youtube video than i am for the possibility of a portal 2 video from this guy
The dark souls Kirby comparison fucking killed me 😂
I've been intending to watch this since it came out, so I have yet to actually see the whole thing(portal is one of my favorite game series, and is a testament to what REAL creativity and level interaction can do, for not just a game experience but the story itself)
but I just LOVE the whole cutscenes monologue before the everything, perfectly encapsulates my searing hated for the quote "its not a game script, its a- *script*"
as if implying for a story to have any importance or societal merit, it needs to *be* a linear tale, a movie, a "non-interactable nonsense"
when in reality, while stray is cute(and imo very nicely visually designed), it is a glorified Detroit: become human🙃
just without talking protagonists to ruin everything lmaoo, seriously tho, my experience watching either game being played felt near identical
rather basic story premise(not much to be invested in right off the bat, "civil rights" and "get home" respectively), and a looooot of nothing while essentially *waiting* to progress to new story
point is, there are good and bad ways to make games, and cutscenes are just another tool in the game-makers-tool-kit
and like all tools, it really really REALLY matters where and HOW its used(not all cutscenes are created equally)
The SLY COOPER series for the PS2, is almost ENTIRELY CUTSCENES when it comes to ANYTHING story related
and yet, its probably the most well "conveyed" story in videogame history, no cap, if you say otherwise replay at least 2 cause 3's a lil minigame bloated
I say conveyed, cause if the point is for little 2yo timmy to "get" what the flashing lights on the screen mean, then it succeeded in LEAPS and BOUNDS
the reason why its so well done tho, is well, pretty obvious when you play it
most of the cutscenes and dialogue are *interlaced* organically throughout the gameplay???
as in most often times theres some other form of leadup to pre-empt the dialogue, or (as the game progresses)as character *reactions* to stuff the *PLAYER IS DOING OR HAS DONE*
>reeeeeally feel like game designers nowadays need to hear that last bit🤦, by god please, actually *think* about the situation the player is in at any given moment
anyways I'm done rambling, I'm sure when I finish this video I'll have heard it 18 times by next month, just like *certain other videos here*
The flood in halo 1 was shnasty way to introduce an enemy, there was a cutscenes that takes away from it. But the level design, the radar blips in the distance, it was soo good
AN INCREDIBLE VIDEO!! ten out of ten will definitely watch this again every time i experience a depression spiral and need a spark of joy but don't have enough energy to replay all of portal again
Bro, I’ve never been more called out in my life lol
This video’s frustrating because I agree with so many points made but the motion that cutscenes are dumb and should’ve died off feels very reductive and almost childlike. I get that overly long expository scenes can be boring and lame but erasing them entirely is just the opposite extreme of the whole “video games as story” argument, there’s no reason the 2 can’t coexist, not every game should be half or last of us 2. It feels like he mostly wants the game but not the video of that makes sense, it honestly feels like his argument is predicated on his own low attention span
Yeah even as someone who has literally been diagnosed as ADHD cutscenes/dialogue in video games don't typically bother me. I do value interactivity above all but that doesn't mean there's no place for more cinematic moments in games. Of course not all games need cutscenes either there are tons of ways to convey a story but saying cutscenes are always bad or pointless seems like such an extreme.
I wouldn’t take it too seriously, it’s his opinion and he made a decent argument for it. We all know that there is no right way to make a video game in the grand scheme of things.
I agree with all of you when I say this, cut scenes are there for a reason, to write them off is almost comedic and just dumb. Halo 2's cutscenes are some of the fucking best and talking to the Gravemind will forever be burned into my brain I watched ALL of the cutscenes for every game, THAT was the experience, not really the game play but that was because the harder difficulty. I WAS a single player veteran of Legendary back in the day LONG before I turned to the multiplayer online stuff for I was a bit too young and that felt like the MLG scene (MLG was big at the time for Halo 3 and what not) Hell Red Dead 2 was the best damn game I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. By freaking Rockstar none the less, they green lit the GTA remake and Enhanced and Expanded. More like sounds king that guy that sells the characters laced weed in the side missions. F that guy he's just scum and a burnout. I have ADHD too, I smoke weed now but that is not relevant to the point really. 60 hours to get LOST in, and people hated it. NO they are just made the PC port was utter trash, unforgivable, but they suck off the MCC collection PC port because it's all halo's in a single "box" and 343 for the Infinite problem Live Service game, and the TV show, but the console version of the game pisses off PC gamers because it's too boring while the PC version doesn't play and runs like a cripple in a slightly elevated field. Stupid as all hell if you as me.
For real. Pretty much every example of games he gives as games where he likes the story telling are games where the story is optional. You either have to seek out lore in the world or can entirely ignore it without loosing out on much. His preference is mindless button mashing which is fine but it also reveals a very shallow enjoyment of games as a medium.
@@siennahartle9069half life, system shock, and metroid are mindless button mashers?

@@BHultra Atlas is the one that reveals that you are the Suchong's Ace in The hole. Ryan reveals that you are a slave and not a man. A man choses and a slave obeys. He was there to convey that idea to the player, "sit through a cut scene." my ass you see a man die, and a slave kill a man on command. Is thirty minutes or it's free not good enough for people no more? Really looking forward to the next video, glad to sub
The mark of a good video essay is to make you invested in something you never even took a second glance at. Take your time obviously but I am so exited for that second video this game rules
Can't wait for Portal 2 video! Keep up the good work!
Funnily enough, while it's probably not my all time favorite memory of Pokémon, that's really hard to boil down, but one of my actual favorite memories was experiencing the ending of explorers of sky for the first time. Sure there may be very little gameplay involved, but that ending is something that stuck with me for years and one that I'll never forget.
That's cool and all
But there is more than one way to tell stories.
I actually watched your portal 2 video first, and then found this later. I really liked both of these videos!
Amazing video about an awesome game. Found you from your Total Drama vids, and found out about this vid from starting the Portal 2 vid that just dropped. Can’t wait to watch that next.
Please do Portal 2!!
i sang along with you at the end teehee
the intricacy and love that went into making portal accessible for many players is so lovely, bless the designers for their efforts
I am so frikkin pumped for the portal 2 video, I just recently finally played it for the first time and its the best goddamn game ive ever played in my life. And I love the way you talk about stuff
Dang ! this was good ! I hope you still make your video of the second game despite the lack of views on this one !
Oh i love this and i cant wait for yhe video on p2 which i consider t be better than the first
1:16 omg hes literally me
the first time i watched this video my phone died right at 1:19:43 and let me just say that was actually so scary to experience💀
I got an ad right when the glitch happened. I wasn’t sure if the glitch was real so I had to go back 10 sec lol
Decided to actually finally watch this video thanks to your update from today. Had it on my "watch later" list and just kept pushing it off for some reason. While I'd say I don't relate to your distaste for cutscenes, I absolutely agree that they can be done better 99% of the time. 10 seconds or so of dialogue every few hours or so is perfectly fine (HK comes to mind, as almost all dialogue is optional, and the like 5 times it isn't out of what can easily be a 50-hour first playthrough, it only lasts for a couple sentences at a time), It can get REALLY boring when you're doing absolutely nothing for like 10 minutes while the characters around you talk to the "silent protagonist", explaining and re-explaining the most basic of concepts, drilling the story into you, making it a requirement to study the story rather than explore the lore.
The most successful games, from a lore perspective, are definitely the ones that don't spell it out for you, and let you find it out on your own. That means no twitter explanations from the devs, either.
(Edit: story mode being a separate, unrequired mode is also a good idea, so you can have cutscenes without it being forced.)
This video was amazing I am so excited for the next
Chamber 18 was when I stopped in my first run(idr why), but this made me wanna play portal again, but since I never got past the turret part once I did just aghm ugfgm ahhh, I don't normally get motion sick,,, I am now motion sick
annoyed af that i played portal multiple times lately (mostly to get the achievements) and i didnt think to break the tube to get the cube out at all, i just grabbed chairs and tried to jump on those to get in the vent and it was way more frustrating than if i grabbed a cube :']
I think the "Android Hell" bit is a "pre-recorded" message for the testing track that Chamber 16 was supposed to be on. GLaDOS used it to threaten you. Or maybe she just wanted the "replacement chamber" theory to make sense to Chell, since killing her with turrets didn't work.
I can't wait for your video on Portal 2. That was the only portal game I got to play cuz my local game store didn't have the first one. I see both games are on steam rn for $15, so I'm gonna buy it so I can play the first one.
I just respectfully disagree with getting rid of video game cut scenes. I don't think the Batman Arkham series would be as good if all the cutscenes were removed. I can't imagine a thrilling way of setting up the atmosphere if we were driving the batmobile to arkham, instead of watching it. We couldnt focus on the Joker laughing hysterically with a creepy smile on his face if we had to focus on the road and drive. How awkward would it be to accidentally (or purposefully) ram into citizen's cars, killing innocents, while Batman is supposed to take one of Gotham's worst criminals back to his cell in arkham? The mood wouldn't be set the same.
I'm so glad my parents got me portal 2 (the first portal wasn't available at my local video game store by the time I got my xbox 360). It is such a fun game. I played the co-op game with my sister. We just seemed to solve the puzzles in a timely fashion but when my mom later played the game.... oh boy. First, she couldn't figure out how to move and look. She used BOTH hands and she still would move, stop, look around, stop, then move. It made me go crazy. Then, I think she rage quit after the first puzzle room or two. Idk why my parents struggled with such a simple mechanic.
Looking forward to the video about Portal 2! :D
As an MGS fan I'm offended by the premise of your video, but I do like the Portal breakdown so I can't be mad.
EYYY man didn’t talk about the scene at the very end where Chell starts getting dragged off by the reclamation bots Glados talked about earlier. Saying if she ever passed out they’d come get here to revive her.
That scene was added later in an update to lead into Portal 2… stay tuned
This is so good!!
Please talk about el tigre
Unrelated, but I love the song 4000 Degrees Kelvin.
As much as I love Portal 2, I was always a bit conflicted about how it doesn't really work well as a sequel to Portal.
It changes the art style, the technology level and architecture of the Enrichment Center change wildly, GLaDOS can simply be rebooted without her cores despite literally blowing up when they're removed in Portal...
Not to mention that "still alive" as an ending song was always quite mysterious, almost implying that the whole escape and boss fight was just another part of the test, which would ecplain why GLaDOS even gave you all the means to destroy her. (Granted, that also makes more sense in Portal 1 where the facility was presumably static unlike Portal 2 where she could have changed it to her will)
I love Cyberpunks story. So much. I felt genuinely attached to the characters and the decisions.
The game play? It's fun. It's got a lot of cool stuff to try out. It is very rough at times though. I feel I always have to fight for every shot. That's why I now only use my fists.
How do you hold the controller?
First - as others have noted, this video deserves way more views than it has.
Second - this video is actually kinda sad for me to watch because I *almost* got to experience this game as an entirely new gamer… unfortunately, the person who was showing me the game was extremely familiar with it and found the my learning curve… well, you also described that part accurately 😂 they wound up taking over, which meant I didn’t get the entire experience you described. But that said? I think you’re right on the money about the ways in which Portal is a great introduction to first person gaming.
GLaDOS actually made it into the crossover game Poker Night 2, as the dealer. She was hands down the best part of that game.
Love the "literal glass ceiling" joke
WHEN ARE YOU POSTING THE PART 2
The video is so so good! :D Dude, as a portal-obsessed freak, I believe your analysis is incredible! New comfort video
Have you heard of boneworks. It like right up the alley of portal and half-life in terms of gameplay. The story you really got to prices to gether yourself but if you have at least a surface leves understand its all you really need. Althought this lore is alot more sprawling when you loot at story explanations and theories. It has the best lore out of any other game I have played.
How does this 2 hour video have so few views and likes?!?? This analysis is amazing and I agree/adore Portal!
Excited for the next video, Portal 1 is one of my all-time favorite games but Portal 2 holds such a special place in my heart. GlaDOS makes me laugh soo hard in Portal 2. Wheatley does as well but GlaDOS' dry humor and her spite at Chell for murdering her never ceases to amuse me.
On the topic of cutscenes I, also really hate how most games have simply become interactive movies as well. I enjoy cutscenes in some games, but I prefer to be playing the game as well and not watching an interactive movie. It's really bad in fighting games. After Mortal Kombat 9 almost EVERY. SINGLE. fighting game tried copying MK9's story format and it's awful to the point where I don't even want to play fighting game story modes anymore unless I have to. MK11 is the worst example of this!
Ah yes, a two hour video on my favorite game series ever. Let’s do this
My favorite pokemon memory was the finale of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Sky
46:00 i don't really get what now the problem is? with the other waiting times, like the one at the start you didn't say anything about that being bad, and the other ones like waiting for a portal to open before you had a portal gun weren't that bad because they were over in the snap of a finger. so idk how much different it now is with the platform?
(no real criticism or anything, was just wondering)
That portal song, "this was a triumph, -still alive", really fits with the personality character of Ezekiel/Matt spiciel (im referencing a tracer dude 🤭that notoriously copied theoddonesout 3 or 4 long years ago, who I portrayed him as Ezekiel) from total drama
I've never played this game but because of this video im so invested in the lore i simply *need* the next one
I just found the portal bundle on steam for $15. I didn't get to play the first game so I'm gonna get the bundle now

If I remember correctly the Stanley parable also started as a half life mod as well. Just another great game that’s stemmed from half life
I doubled checked after commenting it was a half life 2 mod but my sentiment still stands
Imagine the godtier level game that would spawn from a half life 3 mod
You say the little backrooms and fictional backrooms from portal and you describe them to be the exact same
To me frontires was pretty fun to me. Like I liked generations but that was built to play sonic a specific way although very well made. And frontiers not really to me comparable to that game despite taking some notes from it but I also never played SA1 and 2. But I think the movement customization after update 2 was really imperative because it just made movement fun. Being able run and fly off a slight incline is hard to explain why it's fun. I know BOTW and TOTK have multiple movement options but they still fealt slow even thought you have the options to go fast with our without breaking the game. Sonic does not have that issue do to the nature of how the game is built to handle his speed. Compared to other open traversal in games. And the spinn dash really enhances this due to letting you shoot off just about every angle and is a really fun attack option. Although i only played generations and forces i think fronitres showed how sonic can work better in more open levels. The sky railing is somthing i jaut could not completly get behind. And its not that its absd i idea it was just never Incorprated all that well to me in some aspect. Like when they juat lead off to nowhere thats whennit doesn't work. But when its connected to a bigger screen structure thats when I can see the vision. I also thought the rails that spand over the entire map worked as another movement option althought I think it would have been better if the rails and springs where incorporated into the natute of the islands and was built more with exploration in mind with things like caves or higher and lower levels to explore. Kind-of like sonic horizons. Just figured I shared my experience with It.
If you like portal you’ll love outer wilds. Who doesn’t love a game about the mysteries of space and quantum mechanics and time travel

I don't really understand why a prerendered cutscene is inherently worse than an in-game cutscene. With your Half-Life example, you mentioned that while it does sometimes lock you in a box you can still move around while the cutscene is going. I don't really understand how that is really any better than a pre-rendered cutscene. When Gordon finally gets to the lambda complex, you have to sit there for 5 minutes waiting for the scientist to explain why you're going to Xen. You cannot progress forward until the Barney in the room unlocks the next door. There are several moments in the game that are like this, especially in the first hour. The game also literally has a pre-rendered cutscene when Gordon gets knocked out and dragged into the trash compactor. Environmental storytelling is cool for sure, but there is still a place for plot centered dialogue in games. In your Metroid dread example, would you be fine with it if the boss did all the same flourishes and menacing that it does in the cutscene but you were allowed to walk around the arena?
Additionally, saying that the last of Us 2 is all story is a pretty weak argument. The game has a lot of dialogue and cutscenes, but it's sort of disingenuous to claim that there's very little gameplay between story moments. Especially because it follows the exact same structure as the first game (with a few very obvious exceptions). Also, complaining about the ending cutscene is kind of missing the whole point of the game's story. It's not a game about your choices mattering. It's actually very similar to your BioShock example. Ellie is possessed by rage and revenge to the point where she's not even a person anymore in that moment. She's basically just a robot that only knows that she wants to kill Abby. The cutscene taking away control is a gameplay metaphor for Ellie losing control of her own actions. TLOU2 isn't an RPG and you're not supposed to self insert as the main character like in Half Life.
im the opposite bc i luv story videogames and i was pretty bored watching my bf play portal. hoping this video would give me more insight bc i love watching but hate playing so it makes sense as to why id prefer a game focused on story versus gameplay personally
Salty jumpscare
I really enjoyed this video! I will say I think you confused your point by saying you're not a fan of cutscenes then saying you like games with cutscenes that don't feature a lot of dialogue. I got what you were trying to say but it took me a minute to understand. Even if it's a cutscene it uses visuals more than dialogue. I do think those kinds of cutscenes have more impact, people talk more about scenes like the gravemind introduction than keys giving exposition about what the thing they're on is called. I really like the SA2 cutscenes cuz I think they have good balance of dialogue and spectacle, not so much SA1 though.
I don't think cutscenes themselves are the issue, it's using them as a vessel to deliver information as dryly as possible, no interesting visuals or memorable dialogue.
I died alot in chamber 8
super epic fun good video
Hey you sound do a video on half life.
One of the few issues I have with sonic frontires is that it has an interesting story but it's not presented in an interesting way for the most part. And a contribution to that's are the characters although not a complete overhaul making their personalities more reserved then they are ends up taking away some of their personality. To me knuckles and tails get a pass but when sonic got changed to be more reserved it takes away some of that adittude that makes him stand out and I never really noticed this until I saw sonic prime where I think he is at his best. He has more adittude then his boom version but a little less then the sonic x version. I think it makes more sense for sage to be reserved since this is her first time dealing with sonic and his friends.
On one hand i agree with you a lot, on the other.... my favorite game series of all time is most likely persona
