How do you do that? I suspect I'll find it in the user guide before you read this comment, but thanks a lot for the heads up. RUclips has to be the best learning tool on the planet... except for when it's the worst. So why do so many people, who barely have a clue themselves, insist on making videos to pass on their misinformation?

    • @TrevorDennis100
      @TrevorDennis100 3 года назад +2

OK it took me thirty seconds to find it in the user guide, and it says that APAS is disabled when using Intelligent Flight modes, and resumes automatically when exiting Intelligent Flight modes. So the ED would not have been able to use APAS in his test. Is that right?

I think the Mavic Air does better with obstical avoidance on trails because of its size/footprint it’s less likely to hit things just because of that.
Having a Mavic Pro 1, spark, Mavic Air, mavic 2 Pro now and for
avoidance here is how it rank it:
Heavy off-road trail use: Mavic Air
    Open roads/car tracking: Mavic 2
Open trails and roads (no trees): Mavic Air, Spark and mavic 2

Have you seen the Skydio active track? I would love to see you test that one!

  • @deerock7

My M2 has crashed a few times due to obstacle avoidance not working as well as even on the M1 in some instances. Either the M2 just stops and hovers in front of an obstacle waiting for me to take over or it has gone right into the tree branches and been stuck 40 feet up (had to climb the tree but that was fun actually). I must say that this drone recovers from falls much better too, ha. LOVE the camera and the more quiet operation of this new drone but not impressed with obstacle avoidance at all. In addition the active track function loses track of me quite often. Even though these are negatives I'm very happy with this M2 overall.

This environment is beyond the limits for the types of sensors equipped on the Mavic 2 Pro.
A full array with 12 obstacle-sensing 3D cameras is required, like the Skydio R1.
Delivering 12 visual flow cameras and enough image processing power to build a 3D spatial map is not something DJI can do right now at the $1500 mark.

  • @louiercmp

i thought it has sensors & obstacles avoidance.. why didn’t it work?

  • @cavaliers60
    @cavaliers60 6 лет назад

I honestly don’t know what you expect from the thing. It’s doing a pretty amazing job with the amount of brush around it.
The new version added some improvements to it, not make it fool proof.
It’s also not going to perform the same as the air as it is a larger drone. I wouldn’t expect a phantom 4 Pro to do better than the Mavic since it is considerably larger. A more true comparison would be up against the previous Mavic Pro.
Still a great drone. Wish I had the money to get one.

I also have the Air and Mavic 2. I did a similar test with Mavic 2 around trees (but not in a forest) and it did a much better job than the Air -- it flew below, around, and above branches, similar to the Skydio. Maybe you didn't have APAS turned on or the forest was too dense.

Your results don't put me off; rather, they assure me of the extreme limits the drone is capable of. The issue you have is that you fly at 6-12 ft which is well in the brush. Path is fairly clear at your level but at 6-12ft there is too much for it to deal with. The mavic 2 is fairly big as well and if it goes into a spot where it sees branches within 1m on all directions there isn't alot it can do only stop. The only clear direction is probably the one it came from.

I've seen a similar test with an M2 Pro where it a great job of avoiding foliage, but it did start in a clear space while the reviewer walked under and behind trees. I've only owned my M2 Pro for a few days, and I am most definitely not yet up to speed with all the settings (I'm using a Smart Controller). For instance, the icon at the top of the screen which shows which sensors are active. Mine has so far always said that the side sensors are not active, and I have no idea why. So my question is - two years later - have you been able to alter the set up and improve the drone's obstacle avoidance? I've just thought to look at your screen recording, and I can see that you have two bars at the top and bottom, but just one bar each side. Does that indicate best possible obstacle avoidance? So much to learn, but I guess that means it won't get boring.

Hi again! Random, but I decided that I'll use the 2 action cams I still have and I'll get a dedicated point and shoot or cheaper DSLR which will be better for me to shoot video in my low light setting.
My g7x mk 1 does a really great job in low light, but has a recording limit of like 8-10 mins then stops.
But I need something that can record at least 30 mins in 1 video, up to an hour-an hour and a half if possible.
Are there any point and shoots or DSLR's with no video recording limit?
Preferably in the $300-$500 price range?
Also, same situation: Don't need good audio, JUST great video in low light. That's really it.

I want this cleared up. The other day when flying just before sun up I had my Mavic 2 Zoom in positioning mode. I understand it has obstacle avoidance. Without warning it flew into a tree.
I was able to retrieve it unhurt.
Today I took it out and tried several things. Keeping it in positioning mode I flew slowly into
a gym. It stopped about 15' from the gym. I moved back, turning it around and backed it into the gym. Again it stopped 15' from the gym. I then moved it back from the gym and turned it sideways and moved it back to the gym. At no time did it stop or signal me danger. I tried the other side and it would have let me crash in to the gym.
I put the Mavic 2 into Tripod mode. This mode would not let me go forward, backward or each side to the gym.
Is my Mavic 2 working correctly. I know that Sport mode turns off all the crash avoidance sensors.
    Any comments......

Mountain biking - the reason I bought the 1st Gen Mavic... 🙄
Telling the subject from the background and simultaneously avoiding obstacles is too much for the computing power of these... 🥴
Skydio 2 is orders of magnitude better than both generations of the Mavic (partially, because it uses a beacon which simplifies tracking the subject compared to visual tracking) but after watching a video where a guy took it mountain biking I think it's still not good enough for me...
I will wait for Skydio 3...

I'm kind of disappointed by the Mavic Pro in this regard. I'd expect it to do a significantly better job than the Mavic Air did. And instead it stopped quite often. Anyway, thanks for the video! I just had to turn the volume down when you were playing music, it's quite annoying to watch this way... 😂

DJI needs a lot of improvements as far as obstacle avoidance is concerned

So basically it’s good but not great. Not a dealbreaker but not a major upgrade either.

The Everyday Daddy if you aren’t familiar w Peter McKinnon’s channel you should be... it is one of the most successful filmmaking vlogs ever and I see a lot of similarities between your channels
