    I've never touched a piano in my life, nor can I read or understand music, but when I heard this song I needed to be able to play it. So far I can play up to 0:33 through watching other people play. I'm making very slow process, and getting the keys down is somewhat the easy part. But playing the song with the proposed emotion and flow to it is a different thing entirely.
    Definitely makes it harder not having a proper full piano. I've only got a small keyboard which limits me with sound and the like.
    But, still trying. I don't want to die and never be able to play something like this with ease, and just enjoy it.

    • @MiniClayDude

      Keep at it though! I am learning Clair de Lune in the same manner and it is a very slow process (especially the middle part), but it is a huge pay off in the end!

      dude don't do that. start out smaller and learn proper technique. learn to read music and get a teacher if you need. work your way up, will only take 2-3 years or less, depends on how motivated you are. then you will be able to play it properly. If you keep doing that, you're gonna get tired of it

    • @branflakes2600
      @branflakes2600 7 лет назад +6

      123peeonyou, this seems to be a fairly easy piece (though who am I to judge! I'm a violinist, not a pianist), so I don't think it would that that long to learn this if you have proper education.

    • @branflakes2600
      @branflakes2600 7 лет назад +10

      Archetype00, if you learn proper technique and practice scales, then I think you'd have this down in no time! I bet taking lessons will take you farther than one song and help you play anything you please! Not just this!

    For some reason, the passage between 1:28 - 1:41 really speaks to me on a deep and intimate level. Debussy's compositions are so packed full of emotional, and for me, invoke so much imagery. "La fille aux cheveux de lin" roughly translates to "The Girl with the Flaxen hair", and you can unquestionably feel that being expressed through this piece. So beautiful and elegant. Something that's not easily put into words, but Debussy so eloquently conveys through his music.

    Knowing the title of the piece is an obvious thing that gives clues to the inspiriation of the piece, but I'm always interested in what a composer is really thinking about when writing such beautiful works. Was Debussy thinking about a particular person, or a collective of people he had seen in a park or somewhere? Was it a sunny day and he felt inspired? Was he in a state in longing for something beautiful to take or some one he loved into a state s calmness? Was it purely a feeling he had? Was there a girl with flaxen hair he knew or had heard a friend talk about? I wish I knew because this piece conjures up so many beautiful images in my own mind. Dose anyone else get these feelings aswell.

      On the wikipedia page of the song there is a great explanation. It is based on a poem with the same title by Leconte de Lisle, and flaxen hair was a common symbol for innocence!

      Wayne Threadgate that’s the beauty of impressionism. you never know what emotion is supposed to be portrayed, but you do know that you’re supposed to feel something, so you just feel all of them while listening. impressionism is definitely one of my favorite styles.

      I always assumed it was about a young woman Debussy actually saw at some time, perhaps in his own youth. Whenever it was, it must've been before he became rich and famous, or he wouldn't have had to write such a swoony piece about her later.

    One and only Debussy was a masterful crafter when it comes to creating landscapes in music and as many of you said before he created one of the most beautiful harmonies and totally shifted the direction of piano compositions. He and great Stravinsky are my favorite composers and they changed the music and art scene with a peaceful revolution. Kudos to these iconoclasts! I appreciate the diversity that the life shows us!

    Hello Paul,
    I listen to a lot of your covers, particular your Debussy ones, and I gotta say, I really like how you interpret the music. A lot of the other versions of this, Claire de Lune, and so on feel rushed and as though the pianist is just "reading" the music. The part from 1:41 felt instantly familiar. Is it used in some form of modern media?

      Widespread today harmonic movement: IV - V - vi - II and pentatonic in the right hand. it’s also very common in Chinese folk music
