  • Gabe is autistic and nonspeaking. We are practicing different life skills with him like going to the grocery store, selecting items, and paying at the self checkout! Each time we go he becomes more confident! #autism #nonverbal #autismawareness #fortheloveofgabe #nonspeaking

    I'm glad I found you. I have 1 grandbaby. He is 15, Autistic and speech delayed who lives a couple of hours from me. I get him on school breaks and at leat a month in the summer. Since he's on Christmas break now we've had about 3 weeks together. He and I love to go to the coffee shop. Yesterday I taught him how to order what he wanted. He did a great job. He even held the door for me and carried my drink on his own. I was so surprised. Today we need to go to the store so I'm going to teach him how to pay with a card like Gabe did. My daughter and son in law are divorced but both do a great job teaching him things so he can be more independent. I also have a grown son 39 who is Autistic and lives with me. He is mostly independent and has been helping me since my diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer. I honestly don't know what I'd do without these 2 amazing guys and my daughter's in my life. I'm so lucky. They bring me joy everyday.

    I'm deeply impressed by how calm he seems to be. Having a friend with Asperger's, I remember I went to this certain store some months ago. They told me they hadn't gone to any shopping centre during the pandemic. We were normally shopping, but then they handed me their shopping list and went outside. Apparently, they had gotten dizzy because they had lost the habit. They said "there's just. Everything around me. Multiple sounds, multiple products, each one trying harder to get my attention". Getting dizzy was, for them, an early sign of a meltdown.

    • @93runninggiraffes
      @93runninggiraffes Год назад +2

      An autistic person here - and just as a heads up, we don't use the term "Asperger's" any more, and it's not a formal diagnosis in the DSM5. We refer to everything as ASD! The main reason Asperger's isn't used anymore is that this is the name of a N*zi doctor who decided which autistic people got to live (and consequently, which were to die). Also, labelling the level of functioning of an autistic person can mean that those of us that might seem to "cope well" don't get the accommodations that we actually need. E.g., most people can't tell that I'm autistic because of my learned ability to mask... and so won't take me seriously when I advocate for my needs in a working environment and then become confused when I get distressed because they've ignored the needs that I've advocated for (e.g., wearing a sugary perfume which means I need to now go home and work from home for the day, and possibly the next as I'll still smell it in the office for a while and sugary perfume burns my nose - I don't specify that only certain types of perfume are painful for me, because I understand that over specificity in this instance will lead to misunderstandings). So, while those outside of the autistic community might call me "high functioning", I'm not. I only seem to function "normally" for the comfort of those around me, and this actually is detrimental to my own health and well being and leads to me having far more meltdowns than I'd like (things that very few people have seen). I also put "normally" in quotation marks because I think that ASD is regarded as a disability because the world was not built and organised for people like me and Gabe and your friend. We've been handicapped by close minded neuro-typical people (e.g., not by people like you, who seem to be very welcoming and empathetic towards different neuro-types!).

    I have just discovered Gabe through the TikTok snippets you have shown through Facebook. What great love you mums give. It is inspiring that you both have the fortitude to give Gabe life. I have seen it in all the TikTok vids. I have no doubt he is here with you. He does seem to be very intelligent and absorbs your teachings. He does hear and listen from my uneducated observances. I have worked with alongside people with Asperegers who were fundamentally capable of most life-skills. Gabe seems to be in good loving caring hands.

      I'm obsessed with Gabe. I started with the video of him getting his haircut. Watching his face as he saw how good he looked warmed my heart. Although they cannot verbally communicate, I feel like these children at way smarter than anyone gives them credit for. There are thousands of ways that we can communicate. Through our body language our eyes and many other things. Gabe has become a highlight in my day. Just watching him and his enthusiasm for life regardless of his restrictions is not going to stop this boy with moms like you and the perseverance he shows. And on top of it what a beautiful boy. He reminds me so much of my own son so I think is the most handsome thing in the world of course. 😘🤣 He is actually a special ed teacher with a masters in adaptive phys ed. Cousins of his who have autism inspired him to become and special ed teacher

    Great job, moms! ❤️ What we take for granted, kids do need to be taught! I loved it when my boys got taller than me and could help me reach things, then they grew up and no longer shop with me. But sometimes I find a sweet, tall young man to help or just don't purchase the item. Stores need to learn to accommodate shorter people. I loved seeing that big smile! Was so cute, Gabe, looking back for reassurance. You both really did a great job teaching, encouraging, and helping him. ❤️

    Gabe is really smart and fun! I bet spending a whole day with him would be such a learning experience! My son has autism as well and he took us super smart! He is verbal with us but he has selective mutism so he can't always speak to certain people or in certain places. Sometimes he comes out of his room and before he speaks I can see the excitement in his eyes, he's learned something new. He says Mom did you know .......and whatever he says has me in awe, I know he read it on his computer but it is usually something about history or how something works. Not the usual 19 yr old this but he amazes me. We adopted Harley and he once asked me if I knew he had autism, would I still have wanted him. I told him a baby is the best gift in the world and it's like if you were opening a present and it's exciting and you don't know what you're getting but you already love it! So yes I would have wanted you, you saved me. I was lost and cried every month trying to have a baby and then we adopted Harley I stopped crying because I had my baby and then I also realized I already had kids my husband brought 2 into our marriage and I love them so much so the school of Harley teaches us so much!!

    Gabe is going to make a wonderful husband and father one day. His wife will forever feel blessed - there will be no arguments, just peace, hugs & love. He will always get the job done, he will be reliable, a problem solver and he will be 100% honest. I have a 27 yo son who has an Autistic spectrum. He is my most reliable, loving and honest son among my 3 children. God bless Gabe & all others who have this beautiful Autism gift 🙏❤️

    I finally subscribed. This is helping understand autism. Also fantastic job Gabe! Is not easy learning anything in front of a camera and in a grocery store full of people. He is so smart, respectful and handsome. Ladies you are doing an awesome job.

    I happened upon your channel by accident and I have been deeply moved by Gabe and your story. You are both so great with him but what is truly beautiful is watching the ways which he communicates! The inquisitive look in his eyes is enough to bring you to your knees. I am continually awed by the beauty and grace Gabe possesses. I know life isn’t easy but sharing your story this way is something very good for the world. Seeing Gabe has totally changed how I look at autistic people. People like Gabe show us what is really important in life. So much love to you all.
