- Rain is the strongest Protoss player in the World. After retiring from StarCraft 2 as the best Protoss there, he returned to StarCraft Broodwar where he rose to the top quickly. He won both ASL and KSL, and was the most consistent Protoss player of the past few years.
I was lucky enough to run in to him on the ladder recently. I decided to do what any Red Blooded American would do when getting the opportunity to play such a strong opponent: CHEESE.
I all-in'd Rain as hard as I've ever all-in'd anyone.
*please note that any trash talk in the video was for the enjoyment of my twitch viewers. Rain is an amazing player who has my full respect.

MAAAAN I thought you had it for a minute. Few turrets in closer to the CC maybe?? I liked the 2 fact on the fly vs the nexus first. The push was also S league quality for awhile. GG Artosis.
It's really amazing to see Rain react so calmly to the 2 fact cheese. He did have one of the best blind counters in the fast nexus, but his decision to give up his natural and just make speed shuttles with both a reaver and DT drop was amazing. He knew Artosis didn't have that strong of an economy and probably wouldn't have Academy/Comsat as well as turret protection (since those often overlap in function). It just shows you how top-tier Rain is as a player. Great game!
Patrick McHugh I think it’s under appreciated sometimes how top level players are both extremely creative and incredibly decisive in their decision making and execution. Not to put down Artosis at all but seeing how big the gaps between skill level is in first person really is something else.
@@Materialist39 Absolutely. When we, as fans of professional BW, watch other Korean professionals play each other over and over, it can be hard to appreciate how incredibly adaptive and smart pro players are. Even though Artosis is a VERY strong player, we see how Rain intelligently decides the best moves to demolish him, by utilizing gaps in his defense, even when contained in his own base. Skill gap indeed.
So if Artosis had stopped and made a ring of turrets in his base he would have won? He only made 1-2.
@@harizotoh7 I think he overmade turrets around the contain, assuming he could catch shuttles and prevent Rain from getting to his base. So if he had built some turrets in the mineral line, or got an earlier armory for goliath defense (substantially more expensive but better if the game goes long) I think if he had done those he would've had a stronger defensive position at which point it's 1 base to 1 base which favors the Terran I believe. I'm a Zerg player so my knowledge is only based on watching hundreds of TvP matches as a huge BW fan haha. Hopefully that helps answer your question!
the so called "contain" is one of the most stupid ideas to pull in the game, just look how many mineral were spent building turrets, bunkers and even depot close to rain's base, you could easily had another base, or advance the tech, or more army. or at least, if you are "containing" the opponent, get a base, don't just sit there waiting to be attacked

You have big balls to run all in toward Rain without hesitation. For such a courage (and great entertainment for us ) I will hit the like button 1 billion times even if you loose all of them.
I love how people who usually only plays for fun goes 100% serious mode when facing a pro player. Even if they stand less than 10% chance of winning the passion and commitment they have really shows.
Make no mistake, when arty plays it’s almost always serious mode

Great play...I'm thinking when you had the contain up with tanks and bunkers, why not proxy a barracks or ebay and float for highground vision? then slowly push in with tanks? That would also have given you a scout of the tech, could've expected the initial DTs
Pushing the front would also have required the protoss to keep something at home for defense, like the reaver.

No that would of been a terrible decision, pushing up a ramp with 2 fact is almost certainly giving all your gains away. Best decision would have been to kill the nexus then go home and defend, but dan seemed intent on setting up a contain which ultimately worked against him

I thought for sure you had this one. I was like, "is Artosis really going to do it? How could Rain possibly get out of this one?" Well, that DT and Reaver thing was genius. Just too much pressure unless you were really prepared for it.

I think the moment he lost was when he didnt press the advantage and sweep into Rain's base with that major force at Rain's natural, and he didnt immediately build multiple turrets at the angle of his mineral line when he spotted that extra shuttle at 8:50

Can someone explain that button mashing at the beginning when only SCV's are being made? Am I missing a trick?

If you play it's easier to keep ur hands going fast. If you start at 0 it's hard to hit 100. if you start at 100 you can easily maintain ur speed.
I think you mean when he swipes his fingers across a row of keys once, right in the beginning. I don't know why he's doing that, unfortunately. Probably nothing important.

@@JackyVSO that's actually him holding Ctrl and then sliding his finger across all the number keys so that all his hotkeys start off as bound to the command center. He will obviously rebind many of these to other functions as the game progresses but any "unbound" keys will remain as quick keys you can double tap to get your camera back to your main base, regardless of your hand position at the time

His mindset is incredible. I was thinking why he wasnt attacking. I think that on the brute force he would lose. You put him in his two bases. But the drops changed everything. Thats the beauty of bw. Everithing has a counter. Awesome!
Instead of trying to zone rain in would it have been realistic to try to siege and push the main? Or was it smarter to do what Artosis did and just contain and leave Rain on one base
Tai Chen nah, attempting to push up the ramp in this type of scenario is almost always suicide particularly against a player like Rain. The 2fact pretty much accomplished what it needed to. Slightly better defensive posture at home and Arty would’ve been in a very strong position.

I also may have faced off against TY, I'm not sure if it was actually him or not seeing as it was on the american server, but he did smash as I was only in platinum league (he set it up in custom) but he did use a stratergy that seems like he would use

You keep your APM (actions per minute) up so that when you actually need higher EAPM (effective APM), you're already there. You keep yourself warm and ready, so to speak.

Why didn't Artosis bring his army home to stop that double shuttle drop at the end? If his units had started walking the moment the shuttles arrived he might have been able to hold.
Because if Artosis ever lets Rain to his natural, this game is lost. This was an all-in attack, Rain had a much better economy even on one base.

Just curious you were at the advantage all game. Why not continue pushing him. All that waiting gave him time to counter.
jdn408 pushing up the ramp would have been a horrible mistake. Do you play at all? As a spectator it seems like an obvious next move, but when you actually play the game you quickly recognize that trying to push up a ramp in a situation like that is almost always suicide. The 2 fact accomplished it needed to; slightly better defense at home and he would have been in an exceptionally strong position.
