On 8th October 1941, Stalin issued a secret order forming a female aviation unit. Known later as the 46th “Taman” Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, a unit like this had never existed before.
Their operational record began at the Salsk Steppes and the Don battles and ended in Nazi Germany. Flying PO-2 night bombers or ‘mules’, these brave female pilots flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions, which successfully destroyed the enemy’s river crossings, fortifications, machinery and manpower. The regiment flew over 23,000 sorties and is said to have dropped 3,000 tons of bombs. The most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot had flown over 1000 missions by the end of the war with twenty-three pilots awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union. Fighting with equal bravery and skill as their male counterparts earned them the name ‘Night Swallows’ by the Germans.

Once I found Russian movies I have not watched any other. The first one was "Brother". About a boy from the country going to help his criminal brother in the big city. From then on I was hooked. And have seen Admiral, Major, now this and will see more. Thanks for these good movies.

Great series but i'm disappointed by the ending. I wish they gave us some kind of summary of the main characters, what happened with the captured scientist, and details about the "Night Witches" history as a whole... But still this was excellent! I can't get enough Star Media series but I've watched them all. Make more please. With English CC's. Thanks
StarMedia should do a series about the female sniper that kicked Vasily butt in the number of Germans she killed. I forget her name I think it is Bromelda or Golelda. Sorry can't remember her name.

well vasily zaitsev wasnt the soviet sniper with the most kills in WWII, Zikan was the most succesfull soviet sniper in WWII
The deadliest Sovier sniper in WW was Ivan Mihaylovich Sidorenko with about 500 kills.
The deadlist sniper in WW was a Finn, called Simo Häyhä: 542 Kills (705 unconfirmed)

The next serie is the "Attacker" with twelve chapter and gives here with english subtitle. I come from germany, but i like with great characters and good storys. The russian people have a great heart and feel so good for her country.

Stalin was smart to use the resource at hand it gives an understanding of the Russian people and how they fought the war for they freed up men to fight at the front have enjoyed all Star Media Russian TV series so far.
Really really good series...but do with they would tie up the ending.. Too many unanswered questions...but overall a wonderfull series...

All the actors & actresses were top notch, but I think the actress who played Shevchenko (Elizaveta Nilova?) walked away with this series. Such internal brokenness, such constant, intense sadness from so many bad events one after the other, and it came across as 100% authentic, as if that's who she is in real life and she wasn't acting at all. That's a skill few actors possess.
Another excellent series.........Star Media does a great job with the realistic war time reality and the relationships make you want to watch every episode!...bravo russia!
These movies are great in every way, but I'm afraid you have to get used to their kinds of endings. Very, very few have happily-ever after endings. I also really enjoy them. It's their culture. So much sadness in Russian history.

I was reading the stories about "Night witches' in a montly aviation magazine when I was a child. it is good to see on screen. But They did not use the real names I guess. At least I was expectin to see Lilly Litvak. Good job Star Media.
Litviak was not a night witch. She was an a fighter ace and flew with men.

Fantastic Russian series that was superbly made. Again, much better than most out of the Western Media & Hollywood! Based at least partly on truth of a female Russian WW2 pilot unit. The biplanes seemed obsolete, but apparently they used them!

I love the melodrama in this tv-series about World War Two.
The writers had us all set up for the event that I won't spoil.
All the signs were there.
Then they decided luck was with the characters after all.
I liked this, seems like they could of continued.
What a change from Hollywood and American victories. Good to see the other side too.

intrigued serial, although its like a biggles , adventure of derring do .with better looking pilots running about on commando missions , this episode in particular, , what i do sense is a careful writing around the great patriotic war , if some more monies where to be spent on the aerial footage. nice stirring stuff .

For those of us who think or thought that the US and Britain won WWII the last 26 years (since the end of communism) have been a shocking and inspiring history lesson of the truth about the Russian role in WWII. Without the Russians the allies would have lost. Russia suffered the most and defeated more Germans than all other allied countries combined. They killed up to 9 or 10x the amount of the other allies. As for the war with the Japanese, most people don't know how big a role they played in finishing that war in Manchuria. That part of the war was reversed though. The US and Britain can claim 90% of the success versus Japan. So Russia beat the Germans and US and Britain beat the Japanese.
I came to that conclusion long ago, I think the Russians lost civilian and soldier 20 million. US army about 800,000 to 1M. Please correct me if my numbers are incorrect. I am not a republi cant, I like facts.
But a huge number of the Russian losses were caused by STALIN himself. He murdered his own generals, played footsie with Stalin (their non-aggression pact), forced hundreds of thousands to die needlessly with his 'stand fast' orders, and then with 'blocking battalions' killed tens of thousands of others. Maybe 1/3 of your losses were caused by Stalin.

The allies would not have lost, even if Germany had maintained the non-aggression pact and not even if Russia had joined the Axis. There was no way for Germany or Japan to win. It's a matter of economics and atomic bombs.
ebutuoy406. You know, it takes a few seconds to check a fact on Google and you're sitting at a computer. US KIA in World War II, 420,000. The number of your own soldiers thrown away is not in any way a measure of success. We killed nearly as many Germans as the USSR.
Watched the whole series. Not bad, but it is what it is..essentially a soap opera chick flick with very questionable military tactics but great looking uniforms..and sets..and soldiers..and pilots..no one can defeat the Russian supermodels! This is the 4th Star media miniseries that I've watched, and a bunch of Russian cinema too. These people really know how I use a camera. The Dawns Here Are Quiet, old movie and new miniseries, probably my favorites. White Tiger and Panfilovs 28 are Awesome!

@@UserUser-ww2nj он в Канаде сначала прожил 6 лет, а потом переехал в Германию, где учился актёрскому мастерству. Потом обратно вернулся в Россию. В школьные годы он занимался гимнастикой и плаваньем. Потом он служил в армии это в России. После армии он работал на стройке, а потом так как у него очень хорошая гимнастическая подготовка его пригласили в танцевальный коллектив. Начались концерты , гастроли. Ну а потом на 6 лет уехал в Канаду и там танцевал в мюзиклах. Потом уехал в Германию учился на актёра и играл в театрах. Ну и вернулся в Россию в фильмах и сериалах снимается и живёт тут.
