  • Today Capt'n Billy, Thor, and I bounce around to several different sites searching cellar holes. We find some great relics but Billy has to scoot early. I didn't last much longer as it got very windy and cold so I scooted back to Billy's house and got warmed up.
    About Aquachigger:
I enjoy metal detecting for historical items like gold coins, relics, silver coins, and other buried treasures. I also metal detect for gold and silver nuggets and even meteorites. I like to make videos that promote my choice of lifestyle that includes outdoor adventure,
metal detecting, yapping, searching for river treasure, SCUBA diving, exploring abandoned places, hiking, caving, caring for animals and pets, and observing the things outdoors that often go unnoticed by most people who are not familiar with outdoor adventures and nature. I keep my RUclips "Aquachigger" channel family-friendly and hope you subscribe if you like my style.
BTW, you can also catch me here, / chiggsarmy ,but I may get a little edgier there. FB isn't a place for kids anyway...lol.

For those who are not familiar with this kind of blueberry production: A blueberry "field" is called a blueberry barren and they are normally found on areas of glacial till - unsorted sediment dropped by a glacier. The soil ph is fairly low...in some cases almost 4! These berries are called "low" bush blueberries because they are not at all like the typical high bush type which can be 6 ft tall and are quite woody with a larger and more fleshy fruit. Low bush blueberries grow to about 12", give or take and spread through underground roots called rhizomes. The berries are quite small in contrast to high bush and some say a bit sweeter, they can be found in things like blueberry pancake mix. They are normally harvested by "raking", whether it be automated or by hand, by dragging a rake through the bushes and collecting the berries. Since they are frequently found on glacial till, many have too many rocks to do an automated harvest and have to rely on human rakers, mostly migrant workers these days but you can find many locals who still rake, in the past Native Americans did a significant amount. Low bush blueberries are harvested on a bi-annual basis, one year you harvest, then cut or burn that field and harvest it again in 2 years, as a one year old plant is the best producer. Most of the berries harvested in that area of Maine end up going to two large processors, one out of Canada and one local, and their relationship to the price of blueberries over the years has been, lets say: "intersting". There are many local growers who have and are trying to develop other markets such as organic berries and providing restaraunts in the Greater Boston area with fresh product. Support your local blueberry grower! Another great vid, Chigg., thanks!

Southern NJ is where blueberries where first domesticated. Whitesbog in Burlington county was where Elizabeth White and her father were the originaters of the modern highbush berries and many in my family grew and picked through the years. The sandy soil in south jersey is still in my and many others opinion the best tasting blue berry in the world.

Chig! Any luck coming up with the cannon? There should be stuff in the marshes off Rt 191 / Cutler Rd in East Machias. My grandfather used to tell us stories about the reveloutionary ship the Margaretta , one of the first battles of the revolution. He was a historian guy, president of the Maine Old Cemetery Assoc. (MOCA), and talked about where it came in and took shelter and whatnot. And... have you ever hunted a place called "Pot Head" in Machiasport? Supposedly there's pirate treasure off the East Side Rd. We still have a lot of land up there. I live in Buxton now. :)
