Hey Justin! Do you ever light the bride and groom during the ceremony? I'm filming a ceremony with a bride and groom in a dimly lit room against a window with a waterfront view, and don't want to blow out the window. What would you do in that situation? Also, gear-wise, why do you prefer the Godox over the Amaran 60x? Thanks man!
The 60x is honestly a really great buy. I believe it came out just after the Godox but at the price they are it’s definitely worth it. Even offers v mount powered options too.
No problem at all. I’ve never used them for sunset but I do use 4 for the sendoffs. Really helps bring the exposure up a lot. I have used them during ceremonies too to bring up the foreground exposure.
Oh definitely not that powerful. You’d want 600x or 300x. These are perfect for indoor applications though. If there’s enough sunlight coming through they help a lot with the shadows or dark spots.
100% power won’t go very long. Maybe 2 hours but at a wedding you’d never have a need to run them that high for that long. You can create a d tap cable and route a vmount to the stand if you want to have longer battery life though.
I use just the reflector. During the send off I use my assistant and he holds a light stand behind us with a little Godox softbox gel that comes with the kit. That’s the only time. Or in bridal suites.
Thanks so much for watching! The flat base light stands I made using an umbrella stand base from Home Depot. Costs about 45$. Then I just inserted my light stand into it. 🙌🏾
I prefer the spread. The big thing is if it’s too dark in the venue, you have to raise the house lights. I try to reduce the need to do that since most of the interior lighting is horrible. Have to preserve them skin tones lol.

@@JustinPorterMedia Excellent. I’ve considered asking on the fork I send couples after they sign their contract, but I think it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission, especially if it looks good like you mentioned.
@@ryanthompson4846 yea I wouldn’t do that. It’s still not as common in the industry to take lights, or in my case 8, but I’d do it, make it look good and they will assume it’s part of the venue haha.

@@JustinPorterMedia That's so ingenious haha.
Do you ever modify these to spotlight people doing speeches or the first dance? Or is the angle of spread plenty fine as is?
I prefer the spread. The big thing is if it’s too dark in the venue, you have to raise the house lights. I try to reduce the need to do that since most of the interior lighting is horrible. Have to preserve them skin tones lol.
@@JustinPorterMedia Thanks for the reply! I just ordered two, I'm anxious to see how they do. I'm a photo guy (no video) and I've been using flashes for the reception for ten years, but thinking it may be time for a change of scenery.
@@EvanWisheropp oh nice. When I use them at the weddings the photographers rave about them haha. They are amazing for sure. Hope it works out for you 🙌🏾
Can you get a v-mount for this? I apologize if that question has already been asked.
Technically yes you can. You’ll have to find a dtap to v mount cable but it’s possible. It’s just not an included option right out the box.
@@JustinPorterMedia Thanks for the response! Love your stuff, brother 🤘🏻
Does the battery plate charge the batteries or do you need an external charger?
It doesn’t charge them unfortunately. Would be a cool feature but you’ll need an external charger for the NPF batteries.
@@JustinPorterMedia That's a bummer, Do you have one you recommend? The Neewer dual NPF charger I've got takes like 8 hours to charge 2 of the 970 batteries.
@@NickDelDuca I use the power extra charger. It charges 4 at a time but it’s not super fast. Usually takes a while 😭
much love
Do you still use them today.
Thanks
Yep. I have 4 60s and 4 30s. I’d recommend the amaran 60x though.
Wondering how many videographers and assistants go with you to a wedding ?
The largest crew I’ve had was 5. Usually it’s 3 though for the most part.
Great thanks a lot
What are the tall light stands
They are impact air cushioned light stands 13’.
Thanks definitely need some taller stands
@@Nelsonmolinajr they are reasonably priced and lightweight too. Definitely recommend.
If I only can get one is it still good to get them?
Yes without a doubt. I say 2 minimum so you can help with shadows but starting with one is better than none haha
@@JustinPorterMedia I literally have a wedding tomorrow and you are my sign to quickly go to the store and get one 😭 it’s not a huge wedding like yours but I’m in Canada and it gets dark quickly now, so I can’t rely on the window light to help me out during the reception and ceremony
Edit: THANK YOU! I’m doing both photography and videography tomorrow but luckily videography part is just 1 minute highlight trailer. I’m a newbie but you are next level goals !!!
@@Ashleyunfiltered oh dope!! Yea go get one. See if they price match because Amazon has them cheaper at times. Especially the 30Bi.
Crush the wedding tomorrow 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
@@JustinPorterMedia okay thanks so much 🥰🙏🏾
Ohh i love your videos, sub right away
Thank you so much for the support! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Have you considered looking into rotolight Neo 3? RGB and the brightest on camera light in the world.
I have not. Haven’t even heard of that honestly. May look into it now just to see
Mentorship link is dead fyi
Oh I’ll update it. It’s now www.jpmliveacademy.com
Do you ask the couples ahead of time if they want video lighting? I’m considering adding lighting to my wedding videos, but honestly, I feel like some couples and DJs will not appreciate this.
I’ve never asked but I also light it to look good in the room. As long as you do so and it looks good, no one will question it. Bicolor lights are what you want for sure.
@@JustinPorterMedia Excellent. I’ve considered asking on the fork I send couples after they sign their contract, but I think it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission, especially if it looks good like you mentioned.
Not in the fork! In the *form*.
@@ryanthompson4846 yea I wouldn’t do that. It’s still not as common in the industry to take lights, or in my case 8, but I’d do it, make it look good and they will assume it’s part of the venue haha.
@@JustinPorterMedia Good call. I think it does help for sure that the lights you mention here all look like they could be part of the way the venue or the DJ set up the room (rather than LED panels or Aputure 1200ds or whatever that are super obviously “video”). I think with the smaller lights, everyone will be thinking that someone else brought them lol.
what do you charge the batteries with ?
The Sony NPF batteries I use a power extra 4 bay charger I got off Amazon. It was about 35)
@@JustinPorterMedia thanks so much bro
You run 7 lights?? What if you can’t afford all 7 at the moment lol which ones would you go for first? 3 of them?
Haha well not every wedding do I use all of them. Typically, I always use 4 ML60Bi’s during the reception. Depending on the layout and ambience in the room, I’ll add more.
If you can atleast grab 2 ML60bi you’ll be in a good spot. Then add to them over time.
I wanted to be able to run bowen's mount with the battery plate, so I retrofitted the AD300/AD400 adapters to fit the ML30/ML60. ruclips.net/video/oIr72V3g6l0/видео.html I've even got a new video in the works on how to make a custom godox mount to bowens adapter
9ice one bro
Ml60 vs Ml30?
Have both. I use the ml 60s for the dance floor and the 30s for the guests. This way during toasts I can control all lighting.
