Four Day School Weeks Are The New Normal In Oklahoma (HBO)

  • One third of all Oklahoma school districts are now operating on a four-day schedule.
    Oklahoma has cut education funding per student more than any other state over the last 8 years. In the past, Oklahoma has compensated for funding cuts with oil revenue, but oil prices have declined in recent years.
    “Teachers have been reluctant,” principal Nathan Gray told VICE News correspondent Roberto Ferdman. “You’re now forced to cover all the curriculum, all the testing that’s required by the state, in four days.”
    In Oklahoma’s Noble school district, all schools are closed on Fridays to save money, one principal oversees two elementary schools to avoid hiring a second administrator, and the district superintendent also works bus duty.
    Gray says a four-day school week isn’t what anyone wanted, but it was the only way to cope with the cuts. “This was our best way to survive.”

      we have got to start teaching critical thinking skills too. our system rewards people for memorizing facts. that doesn't really make you smart. the election has proven to me that America has gotten extremely stupid and it seems to be getting worse. people completely deny proven scientific facts simply because of politics and religion for example. that is not ok at all in any way. hell look what we r doing to this planet. the evidence is right in front of our eyes. but a lot of folks would rather trust what some idiot politician says. that, to me, is extremely disturbing.

Nazis and Japanese are no longer enemies (looking too many WW2 movies?) and China just takes the level of control over the Pacific that it deserves according to its size and ecenomic power. The worst enemy of the US are US citizens themselves, buying cheap crap at Walmart - imported from China and Mechico.

      They aren't going to compete, regardless of funding. Many developing nations have much better schools than the US for a fraction of the cost. The Mandatory work labor force will not allow 10 hour days for 4 days, because of labor laws that prohibit any work week going over 8 hours a day without Overtime pay.
      4 days doesn't work for jobs that run on a 24 hour basis, or 7 day weekly basis.
      The US Postal Service tried this, and it didn't work as it closed off jobs to those who worked in the Plants or PDC's rather than the Carriers.
      Now they operate 7 days a week, with Sunday delivering over night packages needed for more revenue.

      The Oklahoma state legislature has NOT made cuts to common education in the last 3 years. If fact Common Education just received a 1.6 percent increase in funding compared to last year, at a little more than $2.4 billion. These local school districts made their decisions to move to 4 day school weeks before the next year’s budget was even determined. However, they continue to cite state budget cuts as a reason for 4 day school weeks.

    • @mattblubaugh6743

      Figures reported on the State Educations Board's website that reference cuts actually reflect figures reported by local school districts that made their own local cuts, as none have been made by the state in the last three years. These districts, such as Noble and Durant, OK are having problems generating enough local sales tax dollars and other local revenue to go along with the funds that the state provides.

You ain't from here obviously and don't know what we as Oklahomans are going through in the job sector and how it's affected us. During the recession in 08 we were one of the best states to be in and hardly felt it due to our energy production and export, now with climbing sales tax, health care cost and the lack of energy and agricultural exports due to over regulation is what killed us. Many schools can not afford books and have to find lesson plans online. While this would be a good alternative to the expensive books, there are issues. If the students are confused, there isn’t a book to look to for examples. It is difficult for parents who are trying to help. Our state is 49th in education, it is getting worse please vote on laws to improve this situation

    There are a lot of pluses to a 4 day work week and a 4 day School week. Quality over Quantity works best for most people. Most College Classes only meet 2 to 3 days per week ; And you learn and advance at a much faster rate in College. And we are starting to see that Employees are accomplishing more, and with less Burnout by working 4 days per week, instead of 5 days per week.

    I grew up in a 4 day school week, we had longer class days and a specialized curriculum. It wasn't an excuse to claim we won't get into college or that we were dumber, what a sad victim mentality. Like really what a huge "poor us" video. School is not a daycare, school isn't going to teach your kid not to play video games all day THAT'S YOUR JOB.
    The budget cuts that affect the materials and the overworked teachers having large class sizes as a result of lack of funding IS what is hurting your kid's education, having to take care of your OWN CHILD on a Friday afternoon is not. The four day school week helped us balance school and home life. Kids don't need to be locked in a learning box to be taught how to do things.

  • @pandapower5902
    @pandapower5902 4 года назад +2

    I've done some research- 4 day school weeks are actually a great thing and so stop painting it like it's bad. Schools with 4 day weeks have shown to increase teacher retention AND increase test scores and many schools offer drama, sports, recreational activities on that extra day anyway-- but school is not a babysitter- it's about education, high quality education, which can be done in 4 days (4 longer days- they make the days longer). Many countries have schools with 4 day school weeks (Germany) and have high test scores.

      Wow your a tolerant lefty huh. Becaus we in Oklahoma believe in God we're dumb? You leftist preach tolerance unless it's about Christianity then you just attack us. The reason schools are under funded here is the lack of jobs thanks to us (as a country) importing our oil and natural gas. Along with high taxes on livestock and farming regulations.Putting Oklahomans out of work and losing the taxes and programs it funded. We also are one of the states hit hardest by obamacare so instead of money going to schools it goes to our sky rocketing insurance and penalties brought on by that. If you don't live here you don't have an idea of what we are going through so don't pass judgements of people you don't know or a way of life you don't understand.

    • @JabberCT
      @JabberCT 7 лет назад +10

      tjz19d
      Your schools are underfunded because you keep electing republicans to run the state. They lower the taxes or refuse to raise taxes when its needed, and the schools suffer. Obamacare is their weak excuse to cut schools. That hurts the insurance industry, not schools. They are lying to you. The republicans you elect do not struggle to put food on the table, and their kids get the best education possible. Your kids, however, are their prey. This is why 94% of all scientists and university professors never vote republican. That should be a wake up call. Those people are intelligent, and they know bullshit when they see it. Health insurance has nothing to do with your schools.

    • @tjz19d
      @tjz19d 7 лет назад

      Health insurance has everything to do with jobs, without jobs no taxes can be paid, accumulation of tax revenue slows to a halt. You can't find something without anything. Professors and scientist as much as they like to believe they know best they don't, they push their biased beliefs on young adults who look up to them, science has been proven wrong on a number of occasions over and over again, they have manipulated data to align with political beliefs many times and this has been proven. I understand what your saying but your not looking at the whole picture your manipulating the situation to fit your theory (just like these professors). In the long run you have to have jobs and income to pay for the schools and that's a fact, Obamacare along with over regulation in the energy sector has gutted the energy industry here. We wanted the pipeline it would have made us a very wealthy state with all the production jobs and new energy businesses that would have come from it we could have rebuilt our schools and made them more efficient. Also I'm not a republican I'm an independent I think the 2 party system is what's wrecking our country, theirs bad in both parties but reverting to a broken socialistic style of government won't fix it. You have to have money to spend money and we just don't have any, it's not the republicans fault for that it's the economic hardships that rural America is facing. We were booming in the early 2000's we had an extremely low cost of living, tons of jobs, and good schools we hardly felt the 08 crash, but since then we've lost a significant amount of jobs, our infrastructure is depleting rapidly, cost of living (and taxes) have gone up to the point we have the highest sales tax in the country. It all starts with jobs and we need them bad.

    • @BatterflyHigh
      @BatterflyHigh 7 лет назад +2

      JabberCT No one I know from Noble thinks that. Honestly your comment that they "mostly" think that way is super ignorant.
      tjz19d Mary Fallin rejected millions of $ from the federal government for Medicaid expansion, which is one reason why Obamacare is hitting us so hard. Tax cuts on businesses + oil are seriously hurting our schools, which is partially how they are funded. I agree about gas imports- the loss we faced after the low gas prices last year (from imports) lost us thousands of jobs and is one of the major reasons we had to cut education funding. The money we usually get from taxing gas companies wasn't there anymore because their profits weren't as high. In addition, they get TONS of tax cuts.
      Ugh. Now we have to vote on whether to raise our sales tax so we can fund our schools, because business died down and bc corporations aren't paying their share of taxes.

    • @tjz19d
      @tjz19d 7 лет назад

      Batter- exactly, the problem is the funds go into a slush fund and are divied out as needed. Mary is terrible she's guilty of all kinds of abuse and irresponsible spending it's crazy. I want to vote yes on 779 but not if the funds can't go directly into the teaching programs instead of the teachers and administrators themselves. What we really need is our manufacturing and energy jobs back, we need to cut regulation in those sectors and have kick starter programs for agricultural jobs especially for small local farms. We need to build our local economies again so that the wealth can spread and stop relying on governement intervention because in the end we pay for that too, it's like paying twice every time.

    Back in 2010, my school district switched to a four day school week, which it still operates on today. One way that our school went about it differently than the one shown in this video is by giving students Mondays off instead of Fridays.To make up for the lost days, we have an extended year which begins around August 4th and ends around June 2nd. We also have to go to school from 7:40 AM to 3:45 PM. Contrary to what one would assume, standardized test scores actually improved after switching to the four day school week. The money saved has also helped to drastically improve the quality of education provided. Every school got new laptop and iPad carts, as well as new art and music programs. The most notable result of the budget cut, however, was our brand new high school built in 2015. This was important because our district has only one high school which was previously one of the oldest in the state. We now have one of the newest complete with a laptop or iPad cart in every classroom as well as a renovated sports complex. People should quit criticizing the four day school week. It may seem like it is harming students by giving them less time to learn, but in the end, it produces better results and adds new technologies and programs for students to enjoy. More school systems should consider a four day school week.

And Kevin Stitf a republican hasn’t solved anything either. Also in more liberal towns such as Norman they’re school districts get more funding under left leaning governor (Breea Clark). Also how Mary Fallin was too stuck up to accept funding for the state when they got Obamacare. The Democrat before Mary Fallin were a lot better in the education department.

The problem is that they have 3 day break BECAUSE of budget cuts, and once they are down that road expect schools like that to have day end at 2 instead of 3, then having heating and cooling turned off, and eventually have it consolidated with another school with the same conditions except it being more cramped and having pretty much half of kids have deal with 1-2 hour drive to school every day.

    My thoughts on this cannot be expressed with words but I'll try. This is the first time I've heard something like this has happened, cutting schools for economy issues. I understand what parents that can stay and take care of their kids are saying but there still are people that have to work, therefore leaving those kids either alone or in the supervision of another kid, a teenager. As much as, we students would like more days off, we need them. We have to practice and enforce with continuity what we've learned so we do not forget it. And cutting school days to only four because of economy issues was so unexpected for me that I'm just impacted.

My grades went up, no stress, lots of free time, learned more than in my native country etc. Fridays you could go to school for about 3 hours to ask questions about the subject you are struggling on or get help from other students. So not having class in Friday, is a really good idea for the development of students. I came back to my home country, and my grades went down dramatically.

      vanMrMann Actually evidence suggests that 4 day kids learn more, do better behaviorally, have more focus and overall excel over 5 day students. Same for 4 day work weeks like in Sweden (where they have 4 day school weeks). The way that Oklahoma got to it is the problem.

      Although I may agree with this... seeing it from more leisure time and less sleep-deprived students and faculty ( a.k.a. great short-term effects), it doesn't overrule the bad. Being conformists and blind in ignorance will not solve this issue. Long-term effects of missing one day per week can affect your children in many overwhelming and unnecessary ways.

      Comments like this make me sad, because young people believe that education is a duty forced upon them, when in reality it is a privilege. I personally think that education should be a right, but there are many people around the world that don't get the education that is needed,and the ones that do, like this guy, who want to make school only 4 days, don't take advantage of this privilege. Do you know how hard it is to teach the content that is necessary in only 4 days? I don't understand how people can be so inconsiderate.

    2) Increase diversity and breadth of courses associated with identity politics

    4) Replace equality of opportunity with equality of outcome

    I know Vice is trying to show this as a very bad thing. But honestly (for the age range most kids depicted in the video) to have more time outside school to play, explore their own hobbies, and simply be children is probably benefiting them.

      And robbing them of their education at the same time. Sure any kid would love this. But thats not the point. Everyone would love all year off work, is that a good idea too? They need more and better education. Not less. America is 26th in the world in education.

      xUnleadedx I agree that the education system is broken. We could have them in school 7 days a week with the current system and it wouldn't move us to top in the world.

      Kids at this age, to put it bluntly, don't give a shit about school. It's things that they will do at home, in their free time, that will benefit them for high school. I remember nothing I did in my time in the classroom from that age, but I know what really helped me through the latter years, and that was doing so much reading in my free time when I was young. That's really all that helped me.

      I agree with the fact that kids should have more time outside of school to explore the things they haven't, and to focus on their mental/emotional health, but the fact that the severe underfunding for education exists in that area is something that can't be accepted. Education is a right, and the government not giving priority to it, to me, is corruption. Where does all the money go?

      You're mixing apples and oranges here, you don't just magically create smarter generation by cutting down on studying hours. There has to be a vast fundamental gap between the curriculums taught in USA and nordic countries.

    • @Stache224

      This isn't a Nordic country. This is the US where 50% of its people think the Earth is 6000 years old, think the sun revolves around the Earth, cannot even name their vice president or a single branch of government, and believe a creature from space made people from a mud puddle. The last thing they need is less education.

    I'm a high school teacher. I support this sort of change but not the way it has been done here in this example. Four days a week is not a bad thing, and shorter school days/weeks is a good idea. However, these should be combined with a longer school years, affordable childcare services for working families, and well paid teachers. Most of the highest achieving countries who get better outcomes for their students have fewer hours in school per year than American has, but they have greater support families, teachers, and communities.

    When I went to school to elementary to high school, I had a early day that we get off at 12am on that day. Even though we went to school, most of what we did was match a movie or do some activities we normally won’t do. Even though we went to school, most of that time was nothing but wasting time until school ends. I live in the Silicon Valley so Oklahoma’s four day school was like ours except going to school.
