I think if we were to steel-man the idea that some atheists are mad at God, it wouldn't be that they're all lying and consciously believe he exists and just hate him (though some christians do present this silly argument); rather, the idea, it seems to me, is that even if one thinks God isn't real, their negative regard for His character can have certain entailments, including the potential unwillingness to give it a true chance. If one doesn't think God is love and the source of all good things etc, but a tyrant etc, then even if He did exist beyond a doubt he wouldn't be obedient to Him. So the idea is that it's fundamentally a problem of the heart.
