- This is a film from Russia 1976, not exactly the same as the Hans Christian Anderson story, but MUCH more faithful than the Disney. This is my edited version with music by Ennio Morricone from a 1971 violent Italian Giallo called "Giornata nera per l'ariete" or The Fifth Cord, which I think epitomizes the heart that Anderson intended, with a bitter sweet ending and the search for the human soul. The full version of this Russian film is a musical and somewhat messes up the story, but I edited it to be a bit truer to the book. Sincerely, Huston Huddleston

Wow, the girl who plays the mermaid in this is so beautiful. I absolutely adore her curly blonde hair and the way she swam in the ocean.
The way she silently responds to her dying day is both sad & cute at the same time.

Used to watch plenty of fairy tales from there. They have the most amazing movies of this genre.
Her hair as a mermaid was green, but in the trade for her legs, the sorceress also took her hair color and her voice and gave her the blonde hair instead.

@redryan20000 actually yes, which you can see in the later shot which I didn't include (for obvious reasons) but the little mermaid WAS topless in most of the story
@hustoni It is actually from 1976. The English dubbing is from 1979 (same year that the 1975 anime version was dubbed).
As for the Russian title, it is called "Rusalochka".
@littledivagirl110 In the original Mermaid, she gives her voice so that she can be human and obtain a Human Soul to live with her prince forever... It's about the search for the human soul

In the original story, they find Human items and wear them out of curiosity, but usually they're naked
in the real story she ends up being seafoam, always entering the vast soil, and yet always leaving it in the same movement. forever punished for longing for what she never coul be...

@maroonmystique She does not actually commit "suicide". The Sea Witch told her what will happen to her. So in order to already start her suffering, she threw herself of the board of the ship, but instead of dying, she joins the daughters of the air. HOWEVER, some versions of the story (very few, but there is) states that she turned to sea foam (This story type is mostly common in Denmark, Japan, or Russia).
Woah this movie looks really good it makes me feel sad though is it the music or the fact that the girl looks like a freaky china doll I had once........( shiver)

There is a Czech Version with the beautifull safrancova sisters (mermaid and princess) of 1975 which is close. But it adopts the idea of some scolars that the mermaid should dissolve into foam instead of becoming a daughter of the air. It was not a success because of that.
And from a litterair standpoint that bad ending is inferior to the sylph ending.
The Danish cirkus cirkör made a great performance in 2006 as well. But made the same mistake.

It's interesting that the little mermaid here seems to pull from Russian folklore. With the pale green hair, she seems like the Russian water demons, Rusalka. Very cool!

Where could you find "Rusalochka" in English? Subtitled or with English voice-overs? This story is my favourite, it always stuck a chord in my heart when I read/saw an adaption of it.
I got the dvd from amazon for $11 dollars. it has the option to watch it in Russian with subtitles or English dubbed, so the choice is yours :)
Man if you uploaded this in part's,dubbed or subtitled I'd definately check it out.And if not where can I watch it at? I guess it's my love for Brother's grimmesk film's,but this look's pretty interesting.:D

As nice as the Disney version was it took all the touching sacrifice out of the story. This version appears to put it back in. Too bad we can't see it.

@lizardluver1 In the Hans Christian Anderson Version its said that mermaid live for up to three hundred years and because of this long life span they have no soul, so when they die they become sea foam and are no more. But the good mermaids, who are kind and give up there lives for a good cause are turned into clouds, and they watched over the world for three hundred years...i think thats how long...until they are granted a soul and they can finally go to heaven. Disney had it all wrong.
