1996 saw the show being revamped almost entirely. The title sequence was changed and the studio set was slightly modified as was the theme tune, even the clock music was modified for extra intensity. But the revamp didn't go down too well with viewers as numerous complaints were made about the clock music being revamped for extra intensity and causing too much distraction, which led to the previous clock music that had been in use since 1989 being re-instated.

Wow, was this only the '90s? Carol looks like she's been upholstered in plaid, and RW looks like a real-estate agent, while the other two blend right into the greys. How ugly can they go? And, why can't the contestants talk, instead of listening to RW prattle with bad puns read off of a card? Is this supposed to be amusing? I'm mostly here for the numbers, but I do do the words, too, when I can stand to be this bored. Thank god for pause, mute, and moving the progress bar. That preview feature has saved me so much time and snooooooozzzzzziiiiiinnnnnng.

This was the debut of the current version of the theme song.
dass true!
But the clock theme changed back to the 1989 theme as it was very distracting.

My Mum used to say
"Never complain about something - Someone else is bound to."
Note the menacing music on the clock and mechanisms ticking on the last 8 seconds.
The new intro theme stayed. The new clock theme didn’t.

The opening titles were metronomes spinning, man with cogwheels in his head and an unfolding triangle for the logo.

This new clock tune only lasted twelve episodes. Even watching as a kid I remember how patronising the new remix was.
@LiverPhilTV The stronger ticking bit should have been kept.

Of course everyone talks about the (awful) clock music on this episode, but nobody points out the fact the set was still adorned with the old logo!
Gotta love '90s tele!
dass.... right?
I like it. I'll be the first to admit it shall I. :P
For some reason, the way Richard says "ladies and gentle-men" at 4:47 reminds me of Jimmy Savile.
Must be a Yorkshire thing coincidentally
I agree with you, the clock theme isn't that half bad...
The music was only short lived.
I like that clock
