  • This trip was supposed to be a 6 day 5 night backpacking trip starting at the Benchmark trailhead in the Bob going over White River Pass, up the White River, then over Larch Hill Pass and down the CDT along the Chinese Wall. It didn't work out as planned.....Due to heavy rains for three days prior I deemed the crossing of the Sun River above Indian Point as too risky for a solo traveler. Instead, I planned to simply follow the CDT to the Wall and roam around up there. Unfortunately, on the first of four stream crossings one of my Croc water shoes was swept from my foot and lost downriver. I crossed two more streams barefoot and decided the risk of cuts or damage to my feet was not worth it. I hiked back to my first night's camp and wore my boots through the stream crossings. Unfortunately, my Crocs are also my comfy camp shoes and thus in camp I had to wear the soaking hiking boots. Nonetheless, it was a privilege to be out in the Bob Marshall. It's an extraordinary land. I hiked about 36 miles over three days and had a chance to see its moods and landscapes. Next time I'll either secure my Crocs to my feet or perhaps get a more suitable water shoe. The footage is limited after I turned back below Burnt Creek so the flow of the video suffers. Next time I'll complete it and document the experience fully.

I am life long swimmer, and swim in college right now, and we use these things called "flipper grippers" and they are basically hold your shoe on unde water

That's a brilliant suggestion! I didn't know anything like that existed. It's a very lightweight solution and would be perfect for the situation I encountered. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge on this and good luck with your future swimming endeavors.

In thousands of years, that croc will be found and dug up and an entire civilization of people will think that everyone wore those awful shoes haha

We've all had trips like this to one extent or another and it's always wise to know the risks and one's limits. It was a very enjoyable video nevertheless and demonstrates the challenges and the rewards of the wilderness experience very well. Thanks for your preview of the Bob! Headed there this summer from the Holland Lake TH for some fly fishing on the SF of the Flathead. 👍#2.

Hi John. Thanks for the kind words. Your upcoming trip sounds epic. That is supremely wild terrain east of Holland Lake and the cutthroat in the South Fork will reward you handsomely. Please share your impressions and let me know how it goes. Have much fun and savor all of the pre-trip planning and excitement!!!

My dream is to do a solo hike in the Bob Marshall. It might happen this summer for me. Did you find it to be a beautiful place ? That is primarily why I want to go. It is one of the most beautiful remote places in the lower 48.

I hope you're dream becomes reality this summer! It is a magnificent place. It feels remote and extraordinarily wild. When you're deep in it you'll look around and it will be magical. I'll be heading back to complete my trip this summer as well as another in the Scapegoat Wilderness which is part of the "Bob" complex. Good luck and I know you will have a wonderful time.

Great video. How much did your pack weigh for that trip ? Was it hard work to carry it ?

Thank you for the kind words🙂
I had planned to be out there for 7 days so my pack was around 45 lbs when I left the trailhead. Of course one can lessen the weight considerably if you choose other options. I enjoy some amenities out there and don't mind the weight. I used a new pack on this trip and it carried extremely well. I never felt unduly burdened by the pack weight even on the longest day. Thanks again. Be well!

What kind of camera are you using ?

For the most part I used a Go Pro Hero 8. There were a few time lapse sequences that I used a Sony Alpha 5100, but I could have used the Go Pro for those shots as well. The latter is handy, light, and weatherproof which is most important in the backcountry.
