- Did you know that one of Europe's biggest airports is steeped in dark folklore?
The legend of "Shiphell" (Scheepshol).
One of the most enduring stories is that Schiphol Airport was originally known as "Shiphell". This was due to the large number of shipwrecks that occurred in the area in 1500's.
The Haarlemmermeer, the large body of water where Schiphol now stands, was notorious for its violent storms and unpredictable waters, with countless ships sinking to their watery graves.
Many ships were said to have met their doom there. The term "Scheepshel" (Dutch for "Ship's Hell" or "Ship's Grave" (hol)) encapsulates this fear.
Schiphol states on their website that the name "Schiphol" might have originally referred to something less sinister, such as a place where wood was gathered or towed between lakes.
But the thing with folklore is that it blends reality with imagination.
So there must be something of a true story here.
We will never know.
And it doesn't matter, because this is just a cool bedtime story for kids.
I heard it when I was in Grammar school.
In the end, the folklore of Shiphell adds a layer of mystique to Schiphol Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world today where millions of people pass through on a yearly basis.
Folklore and legends are part of local heritage. In my personal opinion, it ads to the rich history of Dutch maritime lore.
