  • This is part 2 of my instructional series on rebinding paperback and hardcover books in leather. The first video focused on removing the pages from the original book, gilding the page edges, and preparing the text for a new cover. Check out this link if you'd missed part 1:
    • DIY Leather Book Bindi...
    This video focuses on making and decorating a new, leather-bound cover for the book. I don't go into detail on how I design my cover art, but let me know if you're interested in a video on that topic!
    If you are interested in any of the supplies I feature, click the link below for a one-stop shop on my Amazon storefront. Buying there doesn't cost any extra and it helps to support the channel!

    Probably the best tutorial I've seen for "quick and modern" (rather than DAS' traditional style). Very easy to follow and fun to watch! Oh, Austen, use Masking Magic strips to temporarily attach your spine to covers, it won't damage the boards. Or use masking tape but apply it to your clothing a few times first, takes the stick down a bit.

    • @ingeniusdesigns
      @ingeniusdesigns  7 месяцев назад +1

      I'm so glad you enjoy my "quick and modern" approach. I definitely felt some imposter syndrome when I shared it, since I'm no DAS-style expert. I appreciate the tape tip too. These days I often use washi tape or drafter's tape to minimize the damage.

  • @JeffreyDaleStarr
    @JeffreyDaleStarr 18 дней назад

    Necessity being the mother of invention and all, when working on my latest project I realized that I was out of cardboard shipping tubes to use for the spine. So I tried an experiment of gluing multiple paper towel tubes together to get the right thickness and rigidity. This produced an unexpected benefit: since the paper towel tube is thin, I could lay it flat to get a precision cut and get the size exactly right (I've been having a tough time achieving that with a thick shipping tube). Plus, I go through a lot of paper towel on a given week, so the supply will always be there. I've been so happy with the results it might be my default going forward.

    Ok I watched the video and Sir you're officially a genius in my eyes! The cardboard tube as a spine? Genius! The self made press? Um Genius! (Qould love to see a tutorial) And last but not least, and most GENIUS thing...the vinyl for making decorations?! Ok I am mindblowed now. I watched few tutorials on bookbinding and I was sad because the tools for the decoration/lettering stuff are sooo expensive and not easily accessible in my country. So I was ready to just make easy leather cover with no design on it....but now? I can do even more ideas and in an easier way (traditional way seems to be pretty hard and for sure needs a looot of practice before no errors will appear 😆) and the fact that I already own the cricket machine 😌 you just made my day! Thanks so much for introducing me to a new hobby!! I have loads of cheap paperbacks that are beat up from years of use and this is a great way to breathe life back into them. I will say, based on my first time experience, a few things jumped out at me:
    1. When you say thinner leather is better, you MEAN it. I used what I thought was very thin leather and it was extremely difficult to get pulled taut over the book. I'm still pleased with it for a first time attempt, but you weren't kidding about the need for a bit of stretchiness!
    2. You don't need a book press but even having something simple like a bench mounted vice would be a lifesaver. I wrangled my way through using two C clamps and it was...less than fun.
    3. I was very pleased with the results of the heat activated foil, BUT I had a huge problem: it glued all of the pages together completely to the point that I accidentally tore a couple of pages before giving up. Thankfully I was able to sand down all the foil to unstick the pages. Not sure if it was the brand of foil I was using or if I applied heat and pressure for too long, but my advice if the pages do stick would be to NOT force it and just get back out the sandpaper.
    Overall it was a very satisfying project! I can't wait to try other materials too like using fancy paper instead of leather on the cover.

      There's definitely a learning curve, but I'm glad you stuck with it despite some bumps in the road. Most heat transfer foils which are designed to have designs cut into them are far too thick and strong as you discovered. I have only had success with one specific brand of foil so far, but in the future I may do a comparison review to see if I can get any other brands to work. The leather you use definitely makes a difference too. I released a video on how to pick leather for your project recently so I hope that helps. Stick with it and I hope this becomes one of your favorite hobbies!

      Excellent question. I actually haven't done this yet, but I plan to do almost exactly what your proposing with my next set of books. My plan is to put a single sheet of endpaper between each book and glue each book to the endpaper like normal. Because the books I have collected for that project are of different ages, the pages don't line up perfectly, so I plan to use my belt sander or a sharp chisel to level them off before I start my regular sanding process. I wish us both success on our parallel projects!

    This is a great tutorial and is a perfect guide to do a nice looking leather binding. Thank you so much for that. Unfortunately, the part that I wish were covered in greater detail is how to properly apply the heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) on leather. In a couple of cases I tried, the process was a disaster and irreversibly ruined all the work done up to that point. What appeared like an unsightly oily mark (maybe something that was on the leather and melted while ironing? Or something in the HTV carrier?) was left on the leather around the outline of the vinyl. Also, it seems some HTV must be peeled after cooling or the transfer won't happen or happen incompletely. It seems the temperature of the iron must also be set very carefully. Overall, the HTV process just seems a lot harder and risky than doing the binding itself and what's frustrating is that if something goes wrong, it isn't fixable: the book is ruined...Could you by any chance shed some light on this part?
