    I've studied illjustration for 3 years and Fine Arts for 4, and I wish I could have know about this videos by then, because this tramples every art history or art theory lesson I've had in those combined 7 years. Congratulations for this quality content, and thank you so much.

      Well... I think the thing is about studying art is that the REALLY skilled artists hardly ever teach. You have lots of these types of artists that went like 30% of the way and got good enough to impress the universities and schools, therefore getting jobs as teachers and instructors.

    • @purklefluff
      @purklefluff 6 лет назад +9

      art lecturers (university level) are required to be practicing artists with their own research/exhibition schedules. Besides, it's possible to be a great artist and not want to live your life on a commission basis and want a salary. =)

    Karl Kopinski is one of my favorite artists of all time (especially his drawings). Thank you for taking the time to take a deep dive into his work and sharing it among the masses!
    I don't know if you take requests, but hopefully we'll get to see Jaime Jones, Wesley Burt, Peter Mohrbacher, or even Allen Williams sometime in the future!
    Even then, there's still many, many great mtg artists and it would take forever to get to all of them.
    Anyway, keep up the good work!

    Your videos have really made me appreciate the art on Magic cards once again. It was the reason back in the mid nineties that got me interested in the game in the first place.
    I am still on kind of a hiatus from Magic and haven't really played since Khans was released. I honestly didn't think much of the set at first, I don't know if I was burned out at the time, was let down in some ways or had my expectations way too high. I think I was hoping for another major game changer like Shards of Alara was. (The new enemy wedge tri-lands was what I was psyched most for at the time.)
    Since I discovered your channel, I went back and started building EDH decks again and my friend wants to go back to 60 card "kitchen table" magic where anything pretty much goes. I have added disdainful stroke, mastery of the unseen and collateral into these decks since you made me give Khans block another look. Thank you for rekindling my love of the game. Can't wait for the next video dude!

      I find this interesting. Karl isnt the first artist Ive heard of who had to teach himself or move schools because there was too much focus on abstract art and not enough of the artistic fundamentals. Cesar santos comes to mind. Could it be that, in an effort to teach students how to be expressive, art educators have strayed from the things that make a good artist? I am interested in art as a career, but I wouldnt want to go to an art college to be taught nonsense. Is this a real problem, or have I not seen the whole picture

    I never understood why do you always conflate Mongolians and Ottomans: two completely different nations. I'd understand Mongolians and Chinese (as Kublai Khan was Mongolian). But Ottomans came after the European conquest of the Mongolians, after they have retreated back to the Uralian steppes. The height of the Mongolian Empire was in the XII-XIII. century, the Rum Sultanate (the Ottoman turks) didn't become organised til the XIV. (after the Mongolians left the region).

    6:21 just a little FYI, with Mongolian you probably mean Mongolian elite cavalry Keshik who fought horseback with arrows. Seconds later you mention them as Ottoman Turks, however, those two empires are not the same and probably no real relation exists other than racial origins. As far as I know, there is no cavalry unit of the ottomans using a bow and a horse. Ottoman elite cavalry was Sipahi's and all depictions I could find indicate they primarily used spears. Although neither units probably used an armor like depicted by Kopinski I also think this is mostly reminiscent of Mongol Keshiks because of the bow design and the background.

    Wait, hold on, what? Plate armor and leather armor for 19th century soldiers? By the late 19th century, didnt the major powers of the world have the precursor to the machine gun already? And steam power and warships and baloons and early cars? The industrial revolution. I mean maybe Japan was still medieval before they stopped being so Isolated and opened up to the world and became a power themselves.

    I like his drawing of the dude with the chain sword. Kinda hard to find high quality versions of it. But if you do look at the face and teeth of the man.
    Absolute savage

    I literally found out about kopinski today after falling down an illustrator rabbit hole, and then this pops in my feed. I guess I wasn't far off when I thought his drawing looked reminiscent of some Warhammer stuff

    One of my favorites little touches in kopenskis work is on krenko mob boss. If you follow the direction his finger is pointing, you realize he's pointing at the artists signature at the bottom of the piece!
