Her real name was Mary O’Brien. This was recorded with the Muscle Shoals people that Aretha Franklin worked with. The whole Album “Dusty in Memphis” is great.
I always listen to this song thinking I was listening to a black American girl from the 60s. Just found out 2 nights ago that she was white British girl. WOW!!!
She did alot in terms of being The first Blue Eyed Soul Singer in Pop. To many she kicked the door open for alot of Blue Eyed Soul Singers in Europe. Amy Winehouse (RIP), Duffy, Natasha Bedingfield, Adele, Ruthanne and Nadine Coyle of Girls Aloud. She created controversy when she refused to play a Segregated Audience in South Africa and then she also went to The BBC (British Broadcasting Company) to get them to do a Special called Ready Steady Go: The Sounds Of Motown. She did the first Interracial Duet with Martha & The Vandellas with Wishin' & Hopin'. One of her associates was Patricia Cole Arnold aka PP Arnold whose first big break was as an Ikette.
Dusty Springfield was an English pop music singer who was heavily influenced by American r&b and Motown music. Her album 'Dusty in Memphis' is one of my favorites of all time. She had a hit comeback in the 1980s with the group the Pet Shop Boys. They did some collaborations, including the song 'What Have I Done to Deserve This? It's one of my favorite songs of the 80s and Dusty Springfield's voice adds a soulful touch. She had a lot of popular songs in the 1960s and 1970s, as well.
This makes sense now, knowing she was Influenced by RnB and Motown because her sound is so similar...in fact that I figure this was a black singer. Mind is blown!! Omg this girl can sing!! Love the classics of back during this era!
@@chrisrandall2710 It's the album 'Reputation' (1990). Apparently they only produced the B side of the album. Here is the video for the title track: ruclips.net/video/I_r7BiQZlIE/видео.html
I remember hearing this as a kid in the 70s before you saw the artist on video or TV like you do now. I just always pictured Dusty as a black woman in my minds eye and was really surprised when I saw her on TV.
Dusty is part of Blue-Eyed Soul singer from England came with a mezzo-soprano sound others hits " A Brand New Me" "The Windmills of Your Mind" (4/16/1939-3/2/1999)
She was a huge Tamla Motown fan and was influential in introducing TM artists to UK audiences. She was deported from South Africa for playing to a non segregated audience, anti racist in actions as well as words. I believe she also played a part in getting Led Zeppelin signed to Atlantic Records (her american label at the time) on the basis that she knew John Paul Jones from him working as a session musician for her, maybe apocryphal but I believe it, She was just one of the best.
Dusty is my FAVORITE female singer that was part of the "BRITISH INVASION" that started after the Beatles hit the US for the first time. I have all her albums that she ever recorded LOVE her voice, her style, she was SO unique. She has a lot of songs that will just make you cry. One of my favorites of hers is "I ONLY WANT TO BE WITH YOU," one of her first hits in the U.S. in 1964, She also performed on the Ed Sullivan Show. Beautiful lady, who sadly passed away a few years ago. Check out more of her songs and also the one she did with the PET SHOP BOYS "What Have I Done to Deserve This,"
Not many people know that Dusty wasn't English, she was Irish. In fact her real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien and both of her parents were of Irish descent. She was influenced by R&B and Motown but she was versatile enough to perform ballads, French chanson, country and jazz as well. She's one of the most notorious artists of the British Invasion in the mid-60's.
She was one of a kind. No one sang like her. She died too soon. She is the sister of the composer of the Seekers big hit, I Know I'll Never Find Another You. Dusty's song, I Only Want To Be With You is my favorite. She is soul. Pure soul.
Dusty Springfield. A truly wonderful artist with a spectacular voice. She recorded her vocals in the halls of the recording studios as she found the studio sound dead. Got the echo reverb back in the hall. Dusty had a great ear and learned from American Black artists in the 1960s. She showed great respect for these artists. Check out her singing with Martha Reeves, my favorite R&B singer. RIP Dusty. You still have millions of fans. PS Love the maxi gown. Dusty could sure move in that dress. A soul goddess with magnificent pipes.
I've always loved Dusty Springfield since the first time I heard her on the radio. You need to react to "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" and "I Only Want to Be With You". Two more of her amazing songs!
Dusty Springfield. The greatest British female singer, who loved soul music and was the consummate professional - so many amazing songs she peformed through the 1960s into the 70s, and then returning in the 1980s. Sadly she passed in the 1990s from cancer.
There we go again..60's great tunes just shocking today's youth..luv it..yuk..yuk..Dusty sang only for 3 years but her music lives on and on. Hope you listen to more of her tunes..great lady!!
When I was a kid, I assumed this was a southern black woman who was singing based on the soul in her voice. Was pretty shocked to find out she was a white woman from Hampstead, England. Such a wonderful voice.
This song was offered to Aretha, but she turned it down, objecting to the lyrical content. Dusty made it immortal. Interestingly, eventually, Aretha DID record it but, the 'hit' had already hit.
I again have to say how much I love watching your reactions and I love watching people from all genres discovering new genres of music I believe black and white were so much alike there's that soul there's that chemistry there's a lot of things that are just so together really music has no color. Dusty Springfield English when she died she passed away in Australia and she was also a gay woman so there is so much to be gleaned from all of music, I think music brings people together God bless you all you guys are awesome

Love your reaction guys. Dusty was a great voice and incredible live stage performer. She would be big today if alive. Check out Dusty's "Stay A While" ... another blockbuster hit.
According to one biography of Dusty Springfield, around the time that this song was a radio hit she was getting on an elevator and Aretha Franklin got on at the same time, took one look at her and went, “Guuuuuuuuuuurl!” Highest praise ever.
Dusty Springfield, my favorite vocalist of all time. Try "I Only Wanna be with You" or "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" for some more blue-eyed soul!
Her voice band presence, and those lyrics made for one sultry, sensual performance! Love this song. It's on the "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack, which my hubby has played so many times over the years. So glad you enjoyed it! Cheers.
Dusty had SOUL, one of the finest British female singers ever.
“SHE SOUND LIKE ONE OF THE AUNTIES”...I died laughing nearly!! ☠️☠️☠️
The kicker is SHE'S BRITISH!!! If you watch any of her interviews, you'd hear the accent. Absolutely amazing...
She’s kind of the original Adele.
She was Australian
@@laurievoss285 She was born in London.
Maybe have it confused with Rick Springfield ? He’s Australian
British with a beautiful, soft, soulful Southern accent. Not sure how that even happens, but Dusty was amazing.
Dusty Springfield was a powerful singer. She had a beautiful voice
Dusty testifyin'!!
Dusty had so much soul.
CLASSIC 👍🏼👍🏼
Dusty had the soul.
I have always loved this woman’s voice. So naturally sultry...
Dusty taught me the meaning of 'sultry' before I ever heard the word!
One of the greatest blues/jazz singers, ever
Love this!
Dusty has one of the most soulful and sultry voices ever,
Ah, the White Queen of Soul. Such a great singer and much missed.
Her real name was Mary O’Brien. This was recorded with the Muscle Shoals people that Aretha Franklin worked with. The whole Album “Dusty in Memphis” is great.
THEM Cats rocked
The Swampers(that house band) JUST ROCK
Heard that she heard Tell Him by the Exciters, and said that was the kind if music she wanted to record.
I always listen to this song thinking I was listening to a black American girl from the 60s. Just found out 2 nights ago that she was white British girl. WOW!!!
Dusty was so beautiful & soulful.

One of Britain's finest
Growing up, the children of preachers, etc. were some of the wildest kids in school.
The voice of an angel..
Great reaction guys, and this artist is one of my favorites, for this song, along with, Joss Stone, and of course Janis Joplin ❣
You really would enjoy Dusty's version of "You Don't Own Me". It was released in 1964.
this is a beautiful song!!!!!
Yeah this is like a song that I can relate to cuz it was made the year I was born and I appreciate it even more at 57
Great Song ,I love Dusty
Blue eyed soul, to the max

Not just soul and pop but rap as well. She was thuglife before thugs were even born.
In interviews, Elton John always mentions Dusty Springfield as one of his favorite singers when he was a teen.
Yes, sounds like one of the aunties! I think she was the best singer ever!
Awesome reactions!
