So Hyang is a 43 year old devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being healed by God, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She sings for God. She is not motivated by either money or fame. She has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. Vocal coaches and opera singers agree, her technique is FLAWLESS and EFFORTLESS. BTW, So Hyang speaks fluent English. She just got released from the hospital with Chronic Pneumonia and the doctor asked her to not sing for her own health’s sake. She then sings this performance a couple days later under the impression this may be her last performance. This woman’s story is so challenging and motivating. It’s worth looking into if you have a spare hour somewhere.

SoHyang’s a 43 yr old CCM (Gospel) singer & a rarity w/ no social media or desire for fame, rather only to sing for the Lord & others comfort. But she’s well known by the Biz globally & has turned down contracts many times. In spite of what many would consider an obstacle… she continues to amass millions of fans world wide because she’s a soul singer, (as you’ve experienced) …who SLAYS! ♥️

The smile on your face is the reason she sings. She has always said that her voice is God’s gift. She is the most incredible singer I know. Every single performance makes your “feel” something - you can’t not be invested in what she is selling. She arranges all of her own performances - she knows what is required to make her audience feel joy, feel hope, feel faith. I love her.

When she sang this, she was just out of the hospital with Pneumonia. Her Dr. told her not to sing or talk. But she did it for her fans and God. She is the best singer in the world.

Yuppp.. finally... 👏👏👏👏 u will blown away😇She is queen.. she is both powerful at techniques and also emotion. Her life is so inspirational.. she is devout christian singer who really more like singing to God more than fame/money which make us not much seen her on media/tv in korea even the world stage though she is worldclass singer vocalist ever!! Yet we can ussually see her more often her singing in chtuch or charities. She won from faught with cancer and kept her singing didnt give up in her illness. She is cancer surviver.and to sohyang, her goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times as she been through, these why ppl are emotionally in touch whenever she sing a song....
Wow, how incredible. Perhaps that's what connected me with her so much - our shared faith, our shared cancer battles... she's extraordinary.
I hope she sees this reaction because your summary of the performance and how it affected you is (unsurprisingly) exactly what she was going for. If you continue through her catalog you are going to see some amazing things vocally, but the real throughline of her performances is her ability to connect in a way that I've never experienced from a singer. That’s the thing. She’s obviously got a remarkable voice. Flawless. But far, far more than that, she’s authentic. There’s nothing contrived. @@CedricGegel1 All that said, while the arrangement of this song was incredible (yeah she does her own arrangements), it was actually fairly easy for her vocally. Be forewarned that you are going to hear some things you've never heard before along with performances it's impossible to imagine any other singer even attempting. Kinda jealous of what you have to look forward to, will have to settle for the contact high of watching you do it here!

There are some other singers who also have such a high note, and they can surprise me. However she can make me tear up. I didn't even start talking about her perfect skill. It was either uterine or ovarian cancer, it is a bit unclear which. But basically she went into surgery to remove the left side, they found it also on the right and they had to remove both sides leaving her infertile at only 21.

On an interview she said a doctor had to go out and get her families permission while she was out under the general anesthetic. Of course they said yes, you don't mess around with something like that.
She has delicate yet powerful singing voice along with control and delivery but most of all passion and stage presents. She is also on top of that a humble and special lady.
Welcome to Sohyang's world. :) Adding an overlay is often needed for her live performances, Korean broadcasters can be tough, but that's okay us Sohyang fans know about this, we are use to it. Just don't clip and chop up the sound.

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a survivor of uterine cancer from the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in South Korea or Japan.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on RUclips.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and arranged for her to share eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.)

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and locking the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. So as a consequence she no longer pursues fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether she wants it or not, fame has overtaken her, backed up and run her over again!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via RUclips, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

She actually taught herself to speak English from watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" about "one hundred times" when she was a kid, has a perfect North American accent and a bubbly personality.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she has also had several fantasy novels published, as well as a theological treatise on the book of Revelation, and is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
Though she is less than 5' 4" and probably not even 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. She is indeed akin to an addictive substance you can't live without.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear and it is important to note that, as these are _essential_ parts of any great music production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

Well I had made a big grand comment and then it was gone lol :-)) I thank you , and appreciate all you work! You don’t need me to tell you but you are very talented! I have followed this Wonderful Lady for over 8 years and she still Amazes me! I see my fellow fans have filled you in on much but let me summarize; we’ll start when she was in high school, her father left and her and her Mom were quickly poor! SoHyang struggled and became depressed! She found solace in the music of ,Whitney,Celine and most of all Mariah ! She says she listened to her ,album, “Music Box “, at least a thousand times and she discovered the true value of music. She started to sing at 18/19 and while practicing on day at a studio a Korean Writer/ Producer/ Performer,
Jo Hwan-gon heard her and work a little with her and he had her record a song of his,”Mr.”. Then took her on a short tour of South Korea with him! The song had little success but gave her the ,Bug, for singing professionally, which she had not thought of! During this time when she was 18, one sunny day she met , Jesus and she became passionate about her faith! She met her Present day husband at this time , thru the Church and he and his Siblings had started a Family Christian Band and had practised for a long time but had no lead singer! He asked and she said yes! ( both her husbands Parents are Ministers) They started dating after a few months and fell in love and decided to marry! They both say that God kept pushing both to hurry and marry very soon , so they did! SoHyang who was not one to visit the doctor very often, figured this would be a good time for a complete physical! They discovered she had uterine cancer,they operated immediately, during the surgery they discovered it was on both side not just one as they had thought, so consulted with her new husband and his parents as they were at the hospital! They told the doctor to do whatever it took to save her life( she was left unable to have children! She also contracted Hepatitis from tainted blood which has affected her immune system over the years( she had Pneumonia 8 time from early 2014 to mid 2019) she was still suffering from about of this disease when she sang this song! She Performed because one of her fans might need to hear her message in this song! She has turned down recording contracts 3 times, lastly a year or two ago with Sony Music! Her dream was to be a big recording star in America but because she promised to primarily sing to conform people who suffered as she had and to Praise God for saving her life! Because of the fact she would not be allowed time for her Gospel Ministry( has sang in Churches in over 69 countries- many times in the, USA , because her health would not allow her rigorous touring and because God told her it was not the way at this time , well, she turned them down, understanding how God was guiding her in her life! She has written several successful Fantasy novels in Korean and several Christian related books, she teaches voice at a Korean University part time! She just turned 43 and seems to be getting better every year! She has at their request , Performed with, Michael Bolton, JinJoo Lee, David Foster, Brian McKnight Josh Groben and Kirk Franklin and other in Korea and other locale. I have just watched your reaction for the second time so I could take it all in & although I did comment after my first viewing, mainly to say that although this is still a fantastic performance, she was actually unwell & as a massive Sohyang fan I can see/hear that by her standards there bits that weren’t quite as perfect as normal.

As you are a person of faith you should know that she is a devout Christian & although she can literally sing any genre (rock,pop, blues/jazz, the big power ballads & even rapping, in a song called ‘day day’, her heart is in gospel music & gospel elements can often be found in her arrangements of songs that are not normally associated with that genre) & if you want someone to ‘take you to church’ Sohyang is definitely your girl.
She is not the worldwide household name her talent surely merits by choice, she has turned down the big record companies as she is not driven by fame/fortune, preferring to go at her pace & always stating that the only reason she sings is to help bring comfort to those experiencing hard times. She see’s her voice as a gift from god & also believes that when diagnosed with cancer in her early 20’s, it was god that saved her, although the treatment left het unable to have children of her own. She often still has periods of ill health, like numerous bouts of pneumonia, mainly down to a weaker immune system caused by the treatment.
She has this ‘big’ voice but it’s only when you see her side by side with others that you realise just how ‘petite’ she is.
Not only is she an amazing vocalist but she is a very talented musical arranger & like with this performance, she is responsible for all aspects of her performances.
She is also a published author of fantasy novels & by day she is a university lecturer in music/vocals.
Technically brilliant but probably even more importantly she knows how to emote & tell a story through a song & remarkably she somehow still manages to convey the emotion when she’s singing in Korean & I haven’t the faintest idea what the lyrics are!!! so don’t ever be put off watching a performance of a song that you don’t recognise, eg. ‘Arirang Alone’ ( from the show ‘immortal songs 2’) because trust me, it will still be an experience. Vimeo usually provide eng subs for these performances. Unlike Dimash, Sohyang speaks English,among others, so she doesn’t sing with an obvious accent when singing in English. Maybe you now understand why she is often referred to as the ‘queen’ where Dimash is known as the ‘king’ (if you have come across that statement before).
Finally some noteable performances to get under your belt from around this same time before you dig a little deeper & songs I am sure you will already be familiar with, apart from Arirang Alone which you must include, which will enable you to fully appreciate just how amazing her musical arrangements are.
‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ from ‘immortal songs 2’
‘Lean On Me’, again from immortal songs 2 & with Michael Bolton in the audience as a guest because the theme of that weeks show was ‘the songs of MB’ as he’s huge still in Asia. Without giving anything away, she literally left him speechless.
‘Arirang Alone’ from immortal songs 2. A simple traditional Korean folk songs that Sohyang transformed in to the anthem we see with her amazing arranging skills.
‘Everyone’ from immortal songs 2. A song that many consider to be her masterpiece & a song Sohyang herself said is the hardest for vocally, primarily because of a lack of places to take a good breath in this 7.5 mins of pure heaven.
And finally, from this period in the Sohyang story, her performance of WH’s ‘I have nothing’ at the DMC festival.
I believe that you will get a good all round idea of what this ‘angel’ is capable of if you start with the performances above. Maybe then move on to newer material, although maybe you should jump the queue & watch her performance of ‘never enough’, a rare music video from her, but I really think you will be blown away by not only the vocals but by the video itself.
I am sure you will be inundated with suggestions but the one’s I have suggested are usually the one’s that people go to when first coming across this wonderful lady.
I think the best way I can describe Sohyang is to say that she is as beautiful on the inside as her voice is on the outside.

Yeah, I thought you'd like Sohyang. She's a treasure! (And I see you already learned about her being a fantasy author before I could drop that tidbit into my comment. 😊 ) I've read that she went through a difficult time in her adolescence when her parents divorced, and during that time she listened to (and sang along to) a lot of music by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion. Between that and her own church music roots, you can see a lot of Gospel influence in Sohyang's style. (Not saying the other three singers sang Gospel music per se, but their personal styles reflect that musical influence.)

The doctor at the time of this song said that the pneumonia was so bad that I had to rest. Nevertheless, I am touched by Sohyang's perfect song.
She is a gospel singer and she says her goal is to make people who are going through tough times feel better. I feel she also sings to the glory of God! She is heavily involved in all elements of her performance. Her covers always have unexpected bits that make them all very exciting to watch. As a person of faith I think you will really like her. As people have said here, Everyone is perhaps one of the most spiritual songs I’ve heard her sing. I’m not even Christian or religious to begin with, but I could feel the joy and the uplifting message conveyed through her performance. Regardless of your faith her song tells you that you’re not alone and it’s going to be ok. Her subdued performance of Amazing Grace is also pretty great if you’re looking for something more spiritual.

Believe it or not, this performance was only a sample of the weapons in the PHENOMENAL So Hyang's vocal arsenal. She was not well during this performance. She had just been released from the hospital, still recovering from one of many bouts with pneumonia. Her doctors advised her to not sing, and to rest. Her vocal range is RIDICULOUS and her breath control is INSANE.
So Hyang, along with her husband and assistants, arranges every aspect of her live performances; music, background singers, staging, etc. In addition to being a published author of books of fiction, she lectures about song and vocal technique at a South Korean university.

First off, she completely does her own arrangements, everything you see and hear comes from her planning it!! Second, I must warn you, your 6th or 7th song will still be like your first, she just doesn't get old!! A couple of suggestions. The best BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER you ever heard!! Then she gives Whitney her respect and her due and then makes I HAVE NOTHING her own. Now there is a little So Hyang in Mariah, and a little So Hyang in Whitney, and a little So Hyang in Celine, but there is only one "SO HYANG"!!! Dimash and So Hyang are two "EARTH ANGELS" that are specifically here at this time too I believe kind of heal human souls!! There is no female singer on the planet that is better!! SoHyang is a life long Christian. She sings for Gods glory. She does not seek fame or fortune. She has been offered many record deals, which she turned them all down. The family she married into, they have their own recording studio where she has done several albums. She has been to the states many times. Once singing our national anthem at an NBA game. There is a video.
She arranges all of her own covers and directs her orchestra and backing singers on how she wants them to come in. She is in charge of it all. He main vocal coach was Seth Riggs, who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. Her range is unreal. She still has another octave or more still in her. Also, during this performance, she has severe pneumonia, and was told by a dr at the hospital that day, not to speak. She pushed ahead, and with weak lungs and a bad throat, she was still able to do that. Her faith comes first and that is why you hear it so much when she sings. She is I think 43 now, and still not well known.

I could not have said it any better myself, Cedric. Great reaction both in terms of the logistics and coordination of the productions but also the human spirit and value we get from this performance. So Hyang's backstory is one of challenges, tragic hope and the power of uplifting others with what God has gifted her with. Her path and her faith is what propelled her to make choices that are in line with her beliefs. I've been binge watching so many reaction videos to this performance and few got them right in terms of how I want the reaction videos to be that also includes analysis and pauses to discuss that. She was terribly sick prior and was told not to sing. She did anyways and delivered this..
She does her own arrangements, and has control of her preferences. She is perfection. She teaches music at the University of South Korea.
