This period of Irish history is just crying out for a major film. BTW does anyone think that the Cork and Swedish accent are very similar. Both have a similar sing song cadence to them.
Good timing I'm currently reading a book on the history of the Vikings. The Northmen's Fury by Philip Parker for anyone who is interested in reading up on the Vikings.
That's a particularly good one. I recently finished Viking Britain by Thomas Williams. It was a really refreshing and new look at this period. Highly recommend it also.
A really good book on the vikings is Robert Furgusons "The hamme and the cross". That describes it as a religious conflict. For example, there is no british source describing them as "vikings" and there is only one or two sources calling them "northmen" but a great multitude of sources describing them as "pagans".
I discover this channel one week ago i almost finished all your videoes man, i want to say you are an amazing person !!! Thanks for teaching history (im a history major focussed on ancient history mostly) keep up the good work man !
Just found your channel. I've found it extremely informative! My ancestors are Gaelic from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales with some Norwegian/Danish mixed in. I've been learning more about my history so I can pass it on to my children. Thanks and subbed. ..JJ I second the request from @herei go hereigo for a video about King Boru or Robert the Bruce.
Excellent 'short' video on a very important and interesting subject/topic and on the beginnings of an era of major change in Ireland - many thanks for the quality upload!
As an Irishman can can happily say that I learnt a lot here. Delighted at the possibility of Ivar the boneless having a direct hand in my history. Subscribed.
That's exactly what happened with my ancestors. Just found out that I've Norman ancestry in Ireland. One of my ancestors married a Norman man and they owned a castle in the Republic of Ireland 😱
More history, thanks for talking about the less known parts. Everyone hears about the viking invasions in England but the invasions in Ireland are somewhat overshadowed.
Read "The Kings in Winter" by Cecelia Holland 1968. Her writing is not for everyone, but if it's for you you will love it. 11th century Ireland including the Battle of Clontarf, but mostly about clan vengeance.
The only criticism if at all, it was a tad rushed.. Full of a lot of info but extremely condensed. With a bit of elaboration, this would easily be the best video on the topic I've seen here or elsewhere for that matter. Regardless, I'll still be showing it to the daughter as a go to guide for the project they're working on in school.. Quality work and look forward to seeing more.
Thanks the feedback mate. It's difficult to find a balance between cramming everything in so people don't lose interest and going a bit too fast. I will be covering a lot of this stuff in more detail in future vids. Great to hear you're showing it to your kids !
The 841 Lough Neagh one is my village, it was an Abbey but the monks built a massive tunnel network that goes for miles in directions. The tunnels still exist but blocked by explosives since WW2 by the US Airforce, my father as a small boy entered the networks, he reckoned 3-4 miles of made made tunnels.
Ballymaguigan??? Town of the son of the Viking - also called the Island Hill - my grandfather allegedly used to find remains of timbers from the Viking boats in the fields - probably due to the level of the Lough being lowered
Saw your comment in the King and Generals new video Vikings: Great Heathen Army - Battle of Ashdown 871 DOCUMENTARY and came to check out your Viking videos. Btw the music at the is awesome!! downloaded it.
I live in Clondalkin south-west Dublin and the old round tower that was built in the 7th century still stands in great condition. It was plundered twice by the Vikings in the 9th century and every time I pass it I wonder what it must have been like for Clondalkin residents of the 9th century when the Vikings arrived. The residents of Clondalkin were deeply religious people they must have felt like the Vikings were an army straight from Hell.
You christians should not have been crusading against us. You should not have been destroying our ancient culture. You should not have been putting on great displays of your power and arrogance such as "the babtism of Verden" and you should not have desecrated our holy sites such as when you destroyed the Irminsul. If there was hell to pay, you asked for it.
Martin Andersson I don't care about any of that. I was just pondering the scene. How crazy it must have been. I wasn't passing judgement. No need to be defensive or to try and justify shit that happened a thousand years ago. Believe me, I'm no defender of Christianity. I'm sure what you say is true but I seriously doubt that was the motivation behind the raids. Unguarded loot and land was the driving factor behind the raids. The fact we were Christians was probably just a nice little bonus.
Hence the Blonde hair & Blue eyes of my Father & Mother's Irish DNA. Ever since these invasions the Viking blood now runs within our Celtic veins. Nothing at all to be sad about, for now we are as much fierce warriors as we are farmers and great storytellers.
Why is it that here in North America we have never learned anything about this. On and on about the Norsemen raids on England, and then the Bastards conquest in 1066. I love filling in the historical blanks. Thank you for this video! New subscriber.
@Drew Yes, the viking settlements were slaveforts, the irish captured one another and sold to the slave forts who sold them onwards to the arabs in iberia.
Because in north America your "history education" is full of how the only slaves ever were "black" and how somehow it's the native Americans fault for being lazy that they had all their lands cheated and stolen from them so you lot could wreck the natural environment and build Malls everywhere
Because apparently English history is more important. Even though their were Viking activity in Wales, Scotland and Ireland which history tends to forget or ignore due them not being English.
I think I'm a decendant of Ivar (Imar). Been doing doing my family tree and it does looks like it 😅. But so hard to find info around then. Great video.

@okieoiogh8235 All is a bit of a stretch there. Somerled is number 2 on the historical list with the most living descendants, but to say ALL irish people are descendants to the somerled and the Mcdonald line is a bit inaccurate. Dna testing shows only about 20% of Ireland's population carries Scandinavian dna.
Native Irishmen fought the Vikings constantly. There was no seamless Viking rule. They were good fighters but poor organizers. Hence all the kings and high kings. My people withstood the Viking invasion and maintained Irish rule in Limerick. Clan Huey and McDonough.

The first flag with a cross was the danish flag Dannebrog that in legend stories fell from the sky in the start of the 13th century during crusades in the Baltic area.
Great video .my ppl came from denmark and ireland . Wish there was more information on this time period.. I'm looking for more evidence to support the blood line from ivar to the campbell clan of Scotland later ireland..
Apparently the norse went Vikinging during the summer months. Just like our young lads do now a days as they head south for their holidays. Nice to see we're keeping tradtions like this going after all these years. Probably where Ryanair got the idea from.
Lol, a couple of years ago the Spanish demanded that Danish quards or police should be stationed on a certain holiday location in the future, as the Danish youngsters terrorized the area, drinking theire brains out and scared the locals. Not really something to be proud of as a nation but a bit fun never the less.
The Irish and Norse are something like distant cousins it would seem. Nevertheless very similar fighting styles once on land. I’m sure fierce battles took place. Both are very prideful people.
Good video, just one or two things I must mention, the O in the spelling Owel, as in Lough Owel, is pronounced as a U and the pic in the video is not lough Owel. I live less than a mile away 😆
The first raid on Bangor Abbey in county Tweed was in 823-824. Can we reasonably assume this was Thorgest? My ancestor was killed by "foreign invaders" in 958 at Bangor. Can we assume that was connected to the actions of the Ui imair (Ivar) dynasty? Thanks for the great video!
could you do one on the history of Brittany at this time from the home of the bagaudae uprisings to an independent kingdom and then a very rebellious supposedly French dukedom plus maybe one on the Cornish chieftains revolting against wessex a few times and occasionally enlisting Norse aid in their revolts by the way when dumbarton was raised the Alt Clud just switched centers granted they weren't as powerful but were still around until they were annexed into alba in 1018 thanks I really enjoyed
Waterford is great little city but Dublin has much longer history when the norse first arrived in Ireland Dublin had two towns Bàile atha claith the area between high st and church which goes back to the 2nd century and Dubhlinn the àrea from Le pole to the bĺackpool were dublin castle now stands plus Dublins got its royal charter in 1171 and waterford got theirs in 1205 plus Dublin had over 50 viking ruler kings waterford only had around 11
My ancestors the last 200 years are almost exclusively from Western Norway. I have not found a single foreign ancestor in my genealogy studies. Much to my surprise, a DNA test says a little more than 20% of my DNA is from the British isles. Either that test is way off, or there has been some serious traffic across the North Sea.
Possibly from a female slave taken from British Isles, Dublin had the biggest slave market in Europe at the time and many Irish slaves were taken to settle Iceland. The sea was a highway
I'm Danish, 73,2% Scandinavian, 15,9% Irish/Scottish and 10,9 Eastern European. Never heard of any Irish/Scottish or EE ancestors, guess it reflects where a certain seafaring people went.
very interesting piece. however, i am uncertain about equating Norwegians with Norse as opposed to Danes. Is this really sound as I have always understood it as both Danes and Norwegians were lumped together as Norse or Danes. Just different word for essentially same people.
Every day i drive past the site where Eirik Bloodaxe killed his brother. According to the legends, he is buried in a huge pile that i also see every day. (Jarlsberg, outside Tønsberg)
The Viking gave the Celtic church an extra 450 years up TIL Somerled. The Vikings attacked those that took wives to prop up kingdoms that took Romanized wives to betray Ireland’s war effort against rome. The Vikings cleansed the Greek out of the Gaelic church and gave it 450 more years

My ancestor was killed by "foreign invaders" in 958 at Bangor. Can we assume that was connected to the actions of the Ui imair (Ivar) dynasty?
Thanks for the great video!
Uí Ímair equals me.
could you do one on the history of Brittany at this time from the home of the bagaudae uprisings to an independent kingdom and then a very rebellious supposedly French dukedom plus maybe one on the Cornish chieftains revolting against wessex a few times and occasionally enlisting Norse aid in their revolts by the way when dumbarton was raised the Alt Clud just switched centers granted they weren't as powerful but were still around until they were annexed into alba in 1018 thanks I really enjoyed
Agreed, the Celtic kingdoms of Cornwall and Brittany get little attention
Superb video! I ve been doing DNA tested surprisingly and weird cause I m Puerto Rican but mixed with Irish and Germanic how interested 😊
Waterford is currently a shithole tbh. Can't walk down Red square without seeing junkies on every corner. Junky bastards ruined whats left of the City
@@johnhnangle That makes sense.
very interesting piece. however, i am uncertain about equating Norwegians with Norse as opposed to Danes. Is this really sound as I have always understood it as both Danes and Norwegians were lumped together as Norse or Danes. Just different word for essentially same people.
As a new Niall it's always good to learn of this sort of shit. 11/10
Every day i drive past the site where Eirik Bloodaxe killed his brother. According to the legends, he is buried in a huge pile that i also see every day. (Jarlsberg, outside Tønsberg)
i love it
The Viking gave the Celtic church an extra 450 years up TIL Somerled. The Vikings attacked those that took wives to prop up kingdoms that took Romanized wives to betray Ireland’s war effort against rome. The Vikings cleansed the Greek out of the Gaelic church and gave it 450 more years
What was that painting at 1326?
Will there be more videos related to Thrones of Britannia?
Yep. Super excited for this game. I'm planning to do a video on every faction leader, and quite a lot of other videos regarding this time period.
Awesome
But anyhow I appreciate the presentation thank you.
One movement to another kind of port yeah
@8.53 nice tatoo on his left arm
I might be a terrible person for it (I doubt it) but i really respect Vikings there awesome
Good documentary, just a mistake in your map, Britanny was not in the Carolingien Empire...
