Zero drop, high priced shoes lasted one miserable trip for me. I have narrow feet and a high arch; power step insoles work great for my feet in any shoe. The most comfortable out of the box brand I have found is Merrell. Loving your vlog, loving the history insight you share. I truly believe you are tough! This is a once in a lifetime adventure so many people dream of. I hope you find a comfortable shoe fit and carry on. I'm sure you are delightful to other people out there. The hiking community is like none other. The saying "Hike your own hike" is so true. This is your adventure! You make the rules, but ultimately, it's your journey, and you've experienced a lot of good stuff. Godspeed to Katahdin.
I also tried zero drop shoes, big mistake . I tore my calf muscle. I now wear Topo or Keen boots. I enjoy your videos and the history info about the area .
Been my experience that one should get used to wearing zero drop shoes before going on a long hike. Took me a long time to adjust to them. There are shoes that have a wide toe box that aren't zero drop.
Agree! I had to & am so glad I did. Thought need high arch support & after several yrs saw other advise to build up muscles & slowly get to zero drop. Tried it & it worked!
Hope you get get to feeling better soon. I know nothing about the zero drop shoe other than people talking about them hurting their feet. I love my keen hiking boots. Had a pair of Merrill’s and I felt every Little Rock 😭the keens have so much more support I’m on my 5th year with them. Best hiking boot I’ve had so far. I can’t wear trail shoes because of weak ankles. This was a good video 😊love your stories and sweet personality 😊 you look like your getting your trail legs and having fun if you can just find the secret for your keeping your tootsies from hurting lol. I see sunny trails ahead for your 🙏😊🌞
Take care of your feeties. You are doing so well! Hang in there and enjoy the NOC!!! I have been there twice for kayaking and it was a magical place… about 20 years ago. Take some time and enjoy it!
Zero drop shoes are something you want to work your way into a little at a time. My feet love them, but I know a lot of people who they cause nothing but pain. I never recommend them if you don’t have a significant amount of pre-trail time to try them out!
really enjoy your videos and also the history lessons . hope you get some type of shoes that help you . i could never use anything but a pair of work boots. never hurt my feet and always comfortable ,also gave some support for my ankles.
Zero drop shoes can be great for some people but not all people. I would expect the tendon and ligament issues you have discussed makes you not a great candidate for zero drop. You probably should spend some time trying multiple shoes with different drops and shape. Topo makes some good shoes, but you could also check out Brooks as well, those work really well for some. Proper footwear is vital to your success.Enjoying your vlogs so far. New subscriber here.
Low drop are much better than zero drop shoes unless you have been wearing the zero drops for a while. They work a completely differently muscle set and you must acclimate to them before doing big miles.
Love your smile & history lessons. You make learning fun! Are you from (born & raised in) Alaska? I just keep hearing almost a Southern accent. I need you to sound like Sarah Palin - “you bet cha” 😂
That would be a good question, she could be from somewhere else taking one of those those Alaskan gigs that probably pay really well if you can take months of darkness, cold, Polar Bears etc. Guessing that letting someone have the time to hike the AT is standard procedure, six months on six months off kind of stuff, they want to keep her but need let employees maintain their sanity too. But, I don't know that, she could be native.
I'm sure everyone's gone here, but a couple episodes from now she mentions being around Memphis a few years ago...and I'm really hearing the Southern accent myself now. I'm presuming she's a contract nurse and again Alaska is probably a well-paying gig if you're working for the oil companies.
Don't tap out no. You'll be ok. Ok, get your shoes taken care of. That's important. You're fine. I guess I always have pushed myself so damn hard it isn't even funny that I expect everyone else to do the same thing and that's not right. You just go take care of yourself and you will be fine.
What was reasoning behind Outdoor 76 hiking store in Franklin, TN selling zero drop shoes to on trail hiker with sore feet who is not used to zero drop? Usually weeks of town time required to adjust to zero drop shoes. Inserting heel lift in shoe reduces shoe arch support with higher risk of sore feet. Reasoning is with heel lift in shoe there is straight line from ball of foot to top of arch to heel. Without heel lift shoe arch raises above line from ball of foot to heel.
I still say ignore all these people and buy a more "classic" hiking boot. Johnda is right, Merrell is a good boot that is sturdy, a drop you are used too with little break in and get an above the ankle boot. Salomon makes really good boots too along with La Sportiva, Lowa and Keen.
There is a lot of pollen in the South. Especially Pine trees. Just try a cheap antihistamine (WalMart) or allergy pills. There have been several hikers already having issues w/ this.
If you haven't done so already get new boots. Zero drop should not be tried out for the first time on a long distance hike. On another video a hiker got zero drops and ended up tearing his Achilles and apparently that is common.
dump the altra's. i would recommend a hoka speedgoat shoe for you with a Supferfeet RUN Pain Relief insert or a Superfeet Hike Women's Support insert. when you get fitted for your shoe make sure the insert is inside the shoe as this may affect the fitting. keep headng north. you are doing great.
Maybe Hoka Speedgoats for you next time. I'm guessing you have vast medical knowledge, so you probably elevate your feet and cold bathe them. Anyway, feel better Sunny!
"It's much better than being outside" Umm WTF. Why can't any of you stay in your damn tent? Seriously, the trail is for BEING OUTSIDE and enduring it. You all can't even handle a little bit of cold, so none of you belong out there.
Just stop it, Hip replacement, arthritis, and alluded to a back issue ... scoliosis? and she's hiking the AT and some dumass like you complains about her staying in hostels.

Sunny, I suggest you try Hoka Speedgoats or my favorite are the Brooks Caldera 7.
We have been following you since the beginning. We enjoy your informative talks on the trail. Hang in there be safe.
It was great meeting you today at Newfound Gap. We are pulling for you!
Wrong channel. 😂 It’s us 😊

Yes you have to acclimate to them
Love the history trivia you weave into your videos. Now, I'm wondering how many people have comb those woods looking for that cache of silver?

Really love to listen to your stories! Also, happy you have been finding friends on the trail and hope you have foundthe key to staying warm at night?
Good morning Sunny! Good day to you! Sweet Potato was on trail during snow storm! Northbound no bust! 🙂
Take care of your feeties. You are doing so well! Hang in there and enjoy the NOC!!! I have been there twice for kayaking and it was a magical place… about 20 years ago. Take some time and enjoy it!
Hi Sunny hope you feel better, and drink your vitamin C and rest, stay amazing and happy trails 🙂
Sunny. You are really crushing it. Thanks for sharing. Keep it up! I had great memories at the NOC. The Bald Eagles must have followed you!
Zero drop shoes are something you want to work your way into a little at a time. My feet love them, but I know a lot of people who they cause nothing but pain. I never recommend them if you don’t have a significant amount of pre-trail time to try them out!
I'm hoping the next video is the one where you get shoes that work for you!
Wow, that's a bunch of miles, rest those feet. Go Sunny!🌞
NOC is a cool place. Let's see where exactly are you now?
really enjoy your videos and also the history lessons . hope you get some type of shoes that help you . i could never use anything but a pair of work boots. never hurt my feet and always comfortable ,also gave some support for my ankles.
Love your videos and the history you share is wonderful!
I know that Achilles pain so well. I feel so bad that you were sold shoes like that.
I miss your videos. I hope all is well with you - I’m searching for 2025 thru hikers and you came up. Will you be hiking again?

Good comment.

Great video, but I really appreciate all the comments on the shoes.

I walk with a slight pigeon toe , so I wear out shoes faster than normal. Thanks for the historical information, total history nut here .
Doing great and your mental fears are fading, rock on rock star.

Just imagine how nice the trail would be to walk if "Ms Amy's" were scattered along the whole trail.

It did sound strange that they fit you in a 10.5 shoe, what size do you regularly wear?
Try those Hoka's. Bondi 8s or even 7s. If you would like to be sponsored, I will ship you a pair to wherever you want.
Cool account about the buried silver cache - hope your feet improve soon
Crossing fingers that your shoe issue gets resolved.
I hope you have your new shoes by now and that they helped your feet.
Maybe Hoka Speedgoats for you next time. I'm guessing you have vast medical knowledge, so you probably elevate your feet and cold bathe them. Anyway, feel better Sunny!
Best wishes for the Asperlachian trail
FIRST 😊😊

Jeepers, hip replacement, arthritis, back pain: scoliosis? she's enduing a lot more than anything you ever have.
@@TheJhtlag Boo Hoo cry me a river. People are always using injuries and other crap for excuses to get out of putting in any real work on the trail.
Bitter? Party of one?
