It was Ukraine that first used the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drone against Russia. So, Zelensky better not complain now!
These drones cost about $20,000 a piece, a AIM-7 stinger missile costs about $119,000 per missile. A AIM-9 sidewinder missile or a Ukrainian equivalent costs about $381,000 per missile. Even if you shoot down a drone with a missile, it isn't cost effective to do so.

@@Armaan-ql8uz Yes it is. That's why military engineers always look for solutions. Drone warfare is revolutionary in that a cheap piece of equipment can knock out military hardware worth millions of dollars.
It is as revolutionary as the first gunpowder weapons. It enabled armies to equip many people with relatively inexpensive weapons that could take out the strongest knights.

You need highly educated, and highly skilled engineers, technicians, and other skilled workers to produce a guided missile. It's not cheap.

In the area of the settlement of Sukhanovo in the Kherson Region, the enemy managed to wedge into the defense of Russian troops. The Russian military command committed a tank reserve to action and carried out ambush operations, inflicting heavy damage on Ukrainian Armed Forces, as a result of which Ukrainian army units fled the battlefield chaotically.
The Ukrainian military also attempted to break through the Russian troops’ defenses in the area of the settlements of Novaya Kamenka and Chervony Yar, engaging up to three battalions, including a tank unit, at the front’s narrow section. The situation at the forward edge of the defense line was fully restored.
Russian forces thwarted the Ukrainian army’s attempts to cross the Zherebets River in the Krasny Liman area, pushing the enemy back to its initial positions, Konashenkov reported.
Over 40 Ukrainian troops, two combat armored vehicles and three pickup trucks were destroyed.
The Ukrainian military is losing about 200 troops (more like 600 - 1,000) in the Kherson area daily, Kirill Stremousov, Kherson Region acting deputy governor, said on Thursday.
The Kherson defenses have been built professionally and the terrain features help Russian troops pinpoint any breakthrough attempts by the Ukrainian military. Their advantage is the steppe where everything is in full view. their defense appears to be impenetrable, and the steppe is their fortress.
There appears to be no danger of the Ukrainian army penetrating into the city, and the measures for relocating civilians to other territories are only related to possible bombardments from Ukrainian forces.
“The fortified positions that the Russian forces has established are concrete and they have a minimum of three lines of defense,” a Ukrainian army commander who identified himself as Mykola said. “We are in high spirits, but we are lacking in equipment to move forward."
The Ukrainian armed forces have lost up to 60 men in fighting with the Russian armed forces and the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) People's Militia. Russian allied forces destroyed a dozen units of enemy equipment, including two tanks, two ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft twin-barreled autocannons, seven units of armored and vehicle equipment, as well as shot down three drones.
An air raid alert was declared on Thursday in several Ukrainian regions, the country’s media reported.
Ukraine's Strana news portal posted on its Telegram channel a map revealing that the air raid alert was declared in the Nikolayev, Kirovograd, and Poltava regions. Earlier, introduction of an air raid alert in the Dnepropetrovsk region and the Kiev-controlled territories of the Zaporozhye region was reported.
Kiev has also declared air raid alert, the city administration said.
According to some reports, several blasts were heard in Nikolayev on Thursday morning.

The Shahed 136 is not a smart drone. You program it to do a course and hit a target pre-flight and it doesn't have an online channel - you cannot control it or receive intel from it, nor can you change it's course mid-flight. It's sole purpose is to blow up on its target. So it's not really a "loitering munition", more like a very slow missile with a very low payload. It is not useful against mobile army units, because they will not stay in the same location for long, but it is efficient against infrastructure that cannot move. One advantage it does have is that exactly because it doesn't have an online channel, it's virtually immune to electronic warfare. You cannot jam it. The only way to take it down is using CIWS, which the Ukraine has very few of. But I trust the west will take care of this problem. When the Ukraine have enough CIWS's, these drones will be useless.

It is a loitering munition. It could be networked with Mohajer-6 for target acquisition until it locks on its target. Once it locks on the target, it will move towards it and there will be no link with the outside world anymore. And it can be used on mobile units too as there are confirmed photos of Shahed-136 successfully destroying air defenses and HIMARS launching vehicles.
@@martink7609 The mohajer has a 10m wingspan and is a surveillance drone. The Shahed is a completely another series and more advanced drones in this series do have an online channel. But to the best of my knowledge the Shahed 136 does not. However, this makes it very hard to take down.
@@nyyotam4057 You're right that Shahed is a large series of flying wing UAVs that includes even the Iranian version of RQ-170 (Global Hawk). However, you're wrong about Mohajer-6. Mohajer-6 is not only a reconnaissance drone. It can create encrypted links to other Iranian drones, particularly Shahed-136. This is why Russians have been caught using Mohajer-6 in Ukraine, of which one of them has been captured by the Ukrainians near Odessa if I'm not mistaken.

Drone warfare has been going on since at least 2008 during the iraq war - perhaps not with dedicated military drones (discounting the "allieds'). Theres no new era being ushered in here - Iran provided sub par kamekazi drones compared to what the Ukrainians have been able to cobble together with Toys and ammo. Drones are just newer cheaper missiles with a lower success rate - cheap and less effective. It's a different pie chart in an existing set of data.
