Thank you for leaving in the mistakes. You're running into some issues I've been having and I'm so new at this I don't know what I'm doing wrong, or what series of things I'm doing wrong. I've nearly convinced myself it's impossible to do without a bonnet.
I do always use a bonnet for the start of my projects. I have had to make a few for cylinder sizes I've purchased. You can also buy them from people on etsy. If you have any questions, I am always willing to try and answer. Practice, practice, practice. With any new tool, it will take time and patience. 😊
Just to say that Aquilla made this video within 2 hours of me asking for her help to make a starter bonnet. I had got stuck because the crocheted starter bonnet I got with my vintage machine, was beyond use after a short time. I had managed to learn to crank tubes, and then searched for a video on how to make a starter bonnet from scratch. It's wonderful to find someone so unselfish and helpful. Thank you again Aquilla.
Just use a mesh onion bag or a piece of net . The little mesh garlic bags work too but don't last as long . Quicker than a bonnet and not nearly as awkward as the start you attempted . There is a video on it if you do a search . I at the bonnet -- to fussy and I am impatient . The mesh bag you just plunk it over the needles and crank - and you have something to grasp and pull slightly for downward pressure.
I’m glad you showed this. It lets us all know that you are a human, just like us. Thanks

couldn't you just crochet a round and attach it?
Yes that could work too
